The AAPG GIS Volume entitled: Graphic Information Systems in Petroleum
Exploration and Production is now underway. We are presently looking
for a few good reviewers to help us with the articles which are due in
January. The volume will consist of about 15 articles contributed by
authors from Exxon, Univ. of Salzburg, Geodynamic Solutions, BDM
Technologies, Amoco, Dynamic Graphics, PI Dwights, British Petroleum,
Geotech Computer Systems, ESRI, Berry & Associates, and Spatial
Information Systems. A keynote paper by Keith Turner will set the stage
for the volume, and T.C. Coburn and myself will provide an introduction.

Those interested must be able to complete the reviews in one month's
time . The manuscripts are expected to be available beginning in
January. Reviewers will be graciously acknowledged in the volume.
Please respond to my email address or to Tim Coburn at

I'm trying to get a copy (or email address for either author (below)) of a
reprint of an article that was just published. The article is:
Z Zhang, DA Griffith. 1997. Developing user-friendly spatial statistical
analysis modules for GIS: an example using ArcView. Computers, Environment
and Urban Systems, vol 21/1:5-29, 1997.

Other articles or websites that document spatial statistics commands using
ArcView(with the Spatial Analyst extension) also appreciated. Thanks.

I'm trying to use the Sequential Gaussian simulation software in GSLIB
(Geostatistical Software Library by Deutsch and Journel, 1992), to obtain
realizations of permeability. I've examined the results from my first
realization with the SGSIM code and noticed that a few of the estimates are
anomalously high. These estimates are generally located in areas lacking
significant well control. The natural log of the data range from approximately
-7 to +7, however the estimates range from -7 to +38.

If anyone has some insight into this problem, I would appreciate learning more
about how to avoid the anomalously high estimates. If the high estimates are
simply an unavoidable artifact of the algorithm, I would also appreciate knowing
this information.

Thank you,

Elise, in the parameter file, check to see how you have prescribed the
upper tail option and parameter. Also check your setting of zmax. sgsim
should not produce values above zmax. However, I believe in the original
version of sgsim (v1.20) the hyperbolic extrapolation model (option 4) had a
bug that caused the code to disregard zmax and produce large values.
This was only a problem under option 4. I'm not sure if it was fixed under
v1.40 or not. See the discussion of the upper tail extrapolation parameters
on pages 131-135 of GSLIB. I generally stick with the power model and
have found it to work well.

Good luck.

Has anyone experience in the statistical analysis of trace-elements
within particular lithologies and structural blocks, correlation-
coeficients in particular.
I have digitized a geological map, and converted to ArcView 3.0
I also have a geochem data set for 9 trace elements in ArcView.
Once overlain, i hope to perform additional statistical analysis.
The area is a mineralized shear zone.

One way to do this conditionally, that is also attractive
from a geological / soft-data perspective, is to use a two-stage
simulation approach where the long-range model represents the
correlation of some discrete geological entities (e.g., facies),
and the small-scale model(s) represent local correlation of the
property of interest (e.g., hydraulic conductivity) within facies
bodies. You simulate the spatial distribution of facies
first using a categorical indicator stochastic simulation method.
Realizations can be conditioned to observations of facies type.
Then, for each facies type you simulate a complete
field of the variable of interest, with short-range correlation
structure, using either continuous indicator or gaussian
simulation method. These realizations can be conditioned to
observations of the simulated variable (e.g., hydraulic conductivity).
The final result is obtained by mapping each local realization into
those spatial locations where the corresponding facies type was
simulated, and honors observations of both facies type and
hydraulic conductivity.

Possible advantages of this approach are that 1) it
allows for a distinct separation of scales rather than a smooth
transition between scales of correlation such as you would get with
a single multi-scale variogram model, 2) it allows direct
conditioning to both facies type and hdyraulic conductivity,
and 3) it incorporates qualitative geological information
(facies classifications).

Possible disadvantages are 1) you must simulate several fields to
combine into one final realization - computationally demanding,
and 2) you must have enough data to support estimation of local
variograms within each facies type. Overall, however, this
is a simple, intuitive, and consistent approach to simulating
correlated fields with multiple discrete scales of structure,
such as one expects to see in geological systems where there
are discrete scales of structure (e.g., sedimentary structures,
various scales and types of bedding). We are using this approach
in a stochastic groundwater modeling study, and I noticed
other investigators using similar approaches at the recent
AGU conference.

Tim,
Your suggested approach sounds great. The physical basis is
intriguing. For building geological models for reservoir
simulation for the oil industry we currently use the Heresim 3D
software from Beicip-Franlab,Paris and Geomath, Houston. The idea that
facies can be correlated over long range, i.e. over several well
spacings is the first idea. Then within each facies category, the
petrophysics is attributed to each facies.

For Facies, the simualtion technique is the truncated gaussian using
lithofacies proportions to constrain the volume of facies and to
provide the cut-offs for the truncation at each stratigraphic level.
Vertical proportion curves are a fixed probability vector along each
level of the bed layering. Variograms provide a geometry for the
realizations (Gaussian widths). Non-stationarity is handled through
multiple vertical proportion curves.

Each facies has a petrophysical model describing porosity and 3
directions of permeability. A MonteCarlo simulation is most commonly
used here. Core and logs provide most of the data. There is a
volume variance/sample support arguement as to why we might not want
to honor the exact permeability value from a core plug for a cell
that is 25mx25mx0.25m in size.

The approach above is focused on the goal of reservoir simulation. The
physical basis is in close agreement with what you propose. I
strongly agree with the facies first approach.

David

I just want to mention that indeed, in the context of reservoir
description, a two-step approach involving a prior modeling of the
spatial distribution of facies is a good idea.
Examples of the implementation of this algorithm can be
found in these two papers:

1) Goovaerts, P (1996) Stochastic simulation of categorical variables
using a classification algorithm and simulated annealing,
    Mathematical Geology, 28: 909-921.

2) Goovaerts, P & A.G. Journel (1996) Accounting for local probabilities

Hi all,

This approach of modeling facies first makes great sense. We currently are
using a transition probability/Markov approach to modeling facies in
aquifer systems. This has been very successful in alluvial aquifer
systems, where correlation lengths are typically less than well spacings
and geological intuition must enter the modeling. Additionally, the Markov
chain models allow for asymmetrical distributions of facies (e.g., as found
in fining-upward tendencies of fluvial sediments), something that the
standard gaussian/variogram approach can not do. This methodology has been
published in Mathematical Geology by Steve Carle and Graham Fogg [1996, v.
28(4), p. 453-476; 1997, v.29(7) p. 8910918, and v. 29(2), p. 231-244].
Additionally, a SEPM volume on geostatistics will include a paper by Carle,
et al on use of this technique. I believe that Steve Carle is planning to
release the fortran code (a modification of GSLIB code) in the near future.

Hello,

Java GIS - JShape 1.3 is released.
This new version of JShape contains the
following features :

(1). View regular shapefiles through WWW internet/intranet
or local file systems.
(2) support the compressed shapefiles which shrink the regular
shapefiles to 3-4 times smaller. This means GIS data is transfered
faster through network and stored more on distribution media.
(3) support the external programming interface which allows users
to implement their customized Java routines.
(4) support the grid shapefiles which allow users publish the large
GIS data (say 100+MB) through WWW internet.
(5) support the dynamic map interface which allows users to implement
their own tiled image system on the fly.
(6) lots of extensions for all kinds of GIS purposes
(7) support the internation languages.

Subject: GEOSTATS: analyses with rates and proportions

My question concerns current thinking on correlations involving ratio
variables that are proportions and rates. If this problem would be
better posted on another list, i would be interested in suggestions.
Let me also say that my background in is in psychology rather than
geography.

We are interested in identifying block group level census correlates
(e.g., persons under age 29, males, no high school diploma, etc) of an
unlawful behavior measured by 911 calls for service (911 calls are
aggregated to the block group level).

Because the block group population varies considerably, we
standardized all variables by dividing by block group population prior
to computing correlations and a regression model. A reviewer kindly
pointed out that correlations involving ratio variables have been long
recognized to lead to spurious correlations between ratio variables
even when the numerators of the ratio variables are themselves
uncorrelated. He also provided two citations (a 1972? conference paper
by Schuessler and a 1974 Sociological Methodology chapter by Fuiguitt
and Lieberson). I also looked at Cohen and Cohen's book on regression.

From these references, i get that a) it is not correct to infer an
association between the numerator components of two ratio variables
from the association between the two ratio variables. b) One must be
clear on whether the research question concerns the rate of the event
or the underlying count of the event. And, c) that controlling for the
denominator (here, populations) is generally alway preferable to using
ratio variables.

In response to points a) and b), i would say that we actually are
interested in relationships between the ratio measures rather than
between the ratio numerators because ratios are more informative for
planning purposes and because relationships between the ratio
numerators can best be done by person-level data because of
aggregation bias. When we re-ran analyses using the cout versions of
the variables and treating population as a control variable (point c),
we encountered serious collinearity problems (no surprise). All of
this leads me to think we should stick with ratio measures.

I think i should also be concerned about spatial autocorrelation.
However, i am not quite clear on how to work with it. I would welcome
any advice members might have on this concern.

I am interested in how members of this list would work with this
problem. Citations would also be welcome. Please respond either on or
off the list.

Thanks, Gene Maguin

Dr. Riding,
I have converted back and forth between various geodetic datums and state
plane coord systems using the freeware CORPSCON. It was developed and is
maintained by the US Army Topographic Engineering Center, Ft Belvoir, VA. It is
a
terrrific and free package, but I am unsure how well it works for areas outside
the US
or where your area of interest is. I suspect it may do well worldwide at least
for
conversion to Universal Transverse Mercator. You should easily find it by
brousing
the web. -Ed

innovators in the field, relevant panel discussions, technical papers
targeted to industry practitioners, and an up-to-date exhibition of
products and services

The TOOLS 27 Conference Proceedings will be made available worldwide
through the IEEE Computer Society as well as from the TOOLS Conference.

SUBMITTING A PAPER

TOOLS USA '98 is now soliciting papers on all aspects of object-oriented
technology. All submitted papers will be refereed and judged not only
according to standards of technical quality but also on their usefulness
to practitioners and applied researchers. A non-exhaustive list of
suggested topics includes:

There is a quick and dirty method for converting the lat long values into
a metric rectangular coordinate system. This should be allright for a
small area but you might want to check the resutls carefully. I've only
used this for quick exploratory means:

For
latitude (a) [in degress]
longitude (b) [in degrees]

r is the radius of the earth which in KM is appx.6375 km

x = r cos(a) cos (b)
y = r cos(a) sin (b)
z = r sin(a)

x,y,z will be in the units of r.

As I said this is a fast way to get to a rectangular system but probably
is not the best.

If you find a better way please let me know as I have been looking for a
proper way to project my own data without resorting to the above, which
works well for exploratory analysis but is not proper (doesn't take
into account the fact that the earth is not a perfect sphere)

Thanks
Mike

Preliminary Announcement

First International Health Geographics Conference
October 16-18 1998
Venue: The Maritime Institute of Technology, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Sponsors

The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health
Environmental Systems Research Institute, (ESRI), Inc.
(Additional Sponsors/Supporters Invited)

Background: The broad field of health care is increasingly intertwined
with
global information issues, and thus involves the integration of many
disciplines. A significant and important characteristic of health and
medical
information is the geographic relevance on the macroscale (e.g., nationwide
access to health care, control of malaria, or climatic effects on disease),
at
the mesoscale (e.g., regional emergency services, local access to health
facilities), and microscale (e.g., managing the treatment of melanoma on
the
human body). As the needs of the various health fields have grown in size,
scope and complexity, so too has the information technology necessary to
capture/acquire, manage, analyze, present and otherwise support the
information
in ways that increase our knowledge base of the problems and issues
confronting
us, and inform sound actions based on this information.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have evolved as an empowering
technology,
enabling the health geographics professional to use, analyze and present
information in ways not possible with textual and numerical information
systems
(e.g., word processors, data bases, spreadsheets). With GIS, the user is
able
to analyze the spatial and pattern information inherent in the
geographically
based health data. In comparison with other relevant technologies, GIS
offers
greater awareness and ability to respond to health care, medical and
research
issues at the appropriate scale. The robustness of GIS is illustrated
best by
a diverse variety applications: space/time cluster analysis, spatial
trends,
siting of facilities, modeling heterogeneity with covariates, optimizing
delivery of goods and services, predicting risk, exposure assessment,
identifying at-risk populations and defining corrective interventions,
image
classification, spatial reasoning and cognition, spatial multimedia,
animation,
visualization, correelations and so on.

Purpose of Conference: The First International Health Geographics
Conference
(IHGC) will comprehensively bring together for the first time people from
many
different disciplines who share a common foundation: the geographic
aspects of
health. The IHGC will foster dialogue between: doctors, medical
researchers,
epidemiologists, environmental scientists, geographers, geologists,
computer
scientists, statisticians, hydrologists, entomologists, toxicologists,
ecologists, business managers, regulators, and indeed, all those
appreciative of
the links between GIS and health.
Our focus is unrestricted within the domain of GIS and health; we seek to
promote international dialogue and shared learning through the presentation
and
discussion of high-quality research and applications. There are a variety
of
disciplines already identified to lead us towards this aim; case examples
from
Managed Care, Insurance, Pharmaceuticals, Epidemiology, Demography,
Environmental Health, Infrastructure/Facilities Management, Emergency
Systems,
Medicine, Web-based GIS, MIS, Community Health and others will be
integrated
with Methods and Processes focusing on Data Creation/Acquisition, Spatial &
Statistical Analysis, Data Dissemination/Presentation, Automated Systems,
and
Health Information Management to provide a uniquely informative and
enjoyable
experience for attendees.

Cathy & Mike,

a few years ago I wrote both a QuickBasic and a Fortran 90 version of
the Mantel test. These programs are very simple (as the test is), but
were intended for personal use, so they are not very user friendly.
The QuickBasic version is limited by the MS-DOS memory management and
cannot handle large matrices, whereas the Fortran 90 version works
with (almost) any size matrices. If you (or other ai-geostat people)
are interested, drop me an email and I'll send you the source and/or
the MS-DOS executable files.
In order to use the Mantel test program, you have to compute the
distance (or similarity) matrices with another program (the one you
prefer) and to convert these matrices into ASCII files.
I also have a program that performs this task, but it only supports
the coefficients I use more frequently, i.e. 4 dissimilarity
coefficients (Jaccard, Soerensen, Rogers & Tanimoto and Ochiai), 3
distances (euclidean, Manhattan and Canberra) and a species
association index (Fager & McGowan). Also this program has a "stone
age" user interface. It is available in Quickbasic and Fortran 90
versions (source and/or MS-DOS executable) and needs ASCII input files
(raw data).

Cheers,

Michele
