Dr. Riding,
I have converted back and forth between various geodetic datums and state
plane coord systems using the freeware CORPSCON. It was developed and is
maintained by the US Army Topographic Engineering Center, Ft Belvoir, VA. It is
a
terrrific and free package, but I am unsure how well it works for areas outside
the US
or where your area of interest is. I suspect it may do well worldwide at least
for
conversion to Universal Transverse Mercator. You should easily find it by
brousing
the web. -Ed

Greetings and happy new year to all !

Here under is attached a conference announcement which should
interest GIS developers.

Something completely different: I have added a new item called "Jobs"
in the AI-GEOSTATS Web pages. There is an online form which should
be used by those who want to announce jobs related to spatial data
analysis, GIS and Geostatistics. So please don't hesitate to use it.

Best regards

Gregoire

Technology of Object-Oriented Languages and Systems

27th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION

The Move Towards Componentware

Santa Barbara, California, August 3 - 7, 1997

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
*******************************************************

TOOLS is the major international conference and exhibition devoted to
the applications of object-oriented technology. TOOLS USA '98, the
twenty-seventh TOOLS International Conference and Exhibition, returns to
Santa Barbara for the eighth time and continues the commitment to
excellence demonstrated by earlier conferences in Europe, the Pacific,
Asia and the US. Standards established for TOOLS by earlier conferences
in the series include:

     * Emphasis on the practice of object-oriented technology and its
application in industrial environments, complementing the more
academically-oriented perspective of traditional conferences.

     * Solid technical program, based on a strict refereeing process
conducted by an international program committee comprised of both
academic and industry leaders:

     * Balanced coverage of the wealth of approaches, trends and =
variants in the object-oriented community.

     * Combination of tutorials by recognized experts, invited talks by
innovators in the field, relevant panel discussions, technical papers
targeted to industry practitioners, and an up-to-date exhibition of
products and services

The TOOLS 27 Conference Proceedings will be made available worldwide
through the IEEE Computer Society as well as from the TOOLS Conference.

SUBMITTING A PAPER

TOOLS USA '98 is now soliciting papers on all aspects of object-oriented
technology. All submitted papers will be refereed and judged not only
according to standards of technical quality but also on their usefulness
to practitioners and applied researchers. A non-exhaustive list of
suggested topics includes:

+ Reports of experiences with O-O technology

+ Migration toward O-O software development

+ Management and training issues

+ User interfaces, persistence and databases

+ Specification, modeling, and patterns

Subject: GEOSTATS: Lat long to Rectangular
s536334@...

There is a quick and dirty method for converting the lat long values into
a metric rectangular coordinate system. This should be allright for a
small area but you might want to check the resutls carefully. I've only
used this for quick exploratory means:

For
latitude (a) [in degress]
longitude (b) [in degrees]

r is the radius of the earth which in KM is appx.6375 km

x = r cos(a) cos (b)
y = r cos(a) sin (b)
z = r sin(a)

x,y,z will be in the units of r.

As I said this is a fast way to get to a rectangular system but probably
is not the best.

If you find a better way please let me know as I have been looking for a
proper way to project my own data without resorting to the above, which
works well for exploratory analysis but is not proper (doesn't take
into account the fact that the earth is not a perfect sphere)

Thanks
Mike

Preliminary Announcement

First International Health Geographics Conference
October 16-18 1998
Venue: The Maritime Institute of Technology, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Sponsors

The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health
Environmental Systems Research Institute, (ESRI), Inc.
(Additional Sponsors/Supporters Invited)

Background: The broad field of health care is increasingly intertwined
with
global information issues, and thus involves the integration of many
disciplines. A significant and important characteristic of health and
medical
information is the geographic relevance on the macroscale (e.g., nationwide
access to health care, control of malaria, or climatic effects on disease),
at
the mesoscale (e.g., regional emergency services, local access to health
facilities), and microscale (e.g., managing the treatment of melanoma on
the
human body). As the needs of the various health fields have grown in size,
scope and complexity, so too has the information technology necessary to
capture/acquire, manage, analyze, present and otherwise support the
information
in ways that increase our knowledge base of the problems and issues
confronting
us, and inform sound actions based on this information.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have evolved as an empowering
technology,
enabling the health geographics professional to use, analyze and present
information in ways not possible with textual and numerical information
systems
(e.g., word processors, data bases, spreadsheets). With GIS, the user is
able
to analyze the spatial and pattern information inherent in the
geographically
based health data. In comparison with other relevant technologies, GIS
offers
greater awareness and ability to respond to health care, medical and
research
issues at the appropriate scale. The robustness of GIS is illustrated
best by
a diverse variety applications: space/time cluster analysis, spatial
trends,
siting of facilities, modeling heterogeneity with covariates, optimizing
delivery of goods and services, predicting risk, exposure assessment,
identifying at-risk populations and defining corrective interventions,
image
classification, spatial reasoning and cognition, spatial multimedia,
animation,
visualization, correelations and so on.

Purpose of Conference: The First International Health Geographics
Conference
(IHGC) will comprehensively bring together for the first time people from
many
different disciplines who share a common foundation: the geographic
aspects of
health. The IHGC will foster dialogue between: doctors, medical
researchers,
epidemiologists, environmental scientists, geographers, geologists,
computer
scientists, statisticians, hydrologists, entomologists, toxicologists,
ecologists, business managers, regulators, and indeed, all those
appreciative of
the links between GIS and health.
Our focus is unrestricted within the domain of GIS and health; we seek to
promote international dialogue and shared learning through the presentation
and
discussion of high-quality research and applications. There are a variety
of
disciplines already identified to lead us towards this aim; case examples
from
Managed Care, Insurance, Pharmaceuticals, Epidemiology, Demography,
Environmental Health, Infrastructure/Facilities Management, Emergency
Systems,
Medicine, Web-based GIS, MIS, Community Health and others will be
integrated
with Methods and Processes focusing on Data Creation/Acquisition, Spatial &
Statistical Analysis, Data Dissemination/Presentation, Automated Systems,
and
Health Information Management to provide a uniquely informative and
enjoyable
experience for attendees.

Cathy & Mike,

a few years ago I wrote both a QuickBasic and a Fortran 90 version of
the Mantel test. These programs are very simple (as the test is), but
were intended for personal use, so they are not very user friendly.
The QuickBasic version is limited by the MS-DOS memory management and
cannot handle large matrices, whereas the Fortran 90 version works
with (almost) any size matrices. If you (or other ai-geostat people)
are interested, drop me an email and I'll send you the source and/or
the MS-DOS executable files.
In order to use the Mantel test program, you have to compute the
distance (or similarity) matrices with another program (the one you
prefer) and to convert these matrices into ASCII files.
I also have a program that performs this task, but it only supports
the coefficients I use more frequently, i.e. 4 dissimilarity
coefficients (Jaccard, Soerensen, Rogers & Tanimoto and Ochiai), 3
distances (euclidean, Manhattan and Canberra) and a species
association index (Fager & McGowan). Also this program has a "stone
age" user interface. It is available in Quickbasic and Fortran 90
versions (source and/or MS-DOS executable) and needs ASCII input files
(raw data).

Cheers,

Michele

Hi there,
I'm looking for some information on how to check for the stationarity
assumption when using kriging for the evaluation of climatic average data.
What techniques can be used and, for moving windows statistics, what
criteria can be used to determine if the data values are stationary or not,
as a small variation is normal I suppose. Furthermore I'm wondering when
local stationarity can be assumed??
Any sugestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Ai-Geostats members,

I would gratefully welcome any input you may have on Windows 95 or
Windows NT based Software that is capable of either or both Gaussian and
Indicator Simulation as well as Variogram Analysis. Either free or
commercial software is of interest.

I have been through the list of software on the AI-Geostats homepage
which provides some information on capabilities, but I would prefer
recommendations from those who have actually used a package about its
strong or weak points.

I am familiar with GeoEas, Uncert, GSLIB but have no familiarity with
commercial software. In the past I have used the GSLIB fortran versions
directly and then moved the output to either PostScript or 3D matrix
viewers. I am now trying to arrange a less complicated user environment
for some of my Japanese co-workers.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Dear Geostaters,
Ask me for a zipped attachment in Word of an extract of the
Geo-Eas manual, if you want it. Of course, there is no bona fide
substitute for:

                 Englund, E. & A. Sparks. 1991. Geo-Eas 1.2.1,
                 User's Guide. Environmental Monitoring Systems,
US Environmental Protection Agency, Las Vegas.

The trifling conflict is nonWord vs Word, and the larger conflict is
DOS,UNIX and WINDOWS. Windows is happy when it's dominating you and
everthing and complains bitterly about closing DOS programs, etc. Then I
don't have a readily available Unix server! So perhaps we all have
incompatibility problems. Thanks to Acrobat Reader, I read the given
manual. I felt I should get it into Word so I did. Unfortunately, I
don't know an easy way to get the illustrations out of Acrobat so I, as
valuable as they are, left them out of my 64-page extract.

More, here in Mexico, we might be looking ahead to get teaching texts
into Spanish. Mathematics, statistics, biogeography (ecology too) and
geology are, shall I say, at a low level of intuition.

Best, Paul R Earl

CALL FOR PAPERS

1st International Conference
Computer Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard

RISK ANALYSIS 98

http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/risk98/

6-8 October 1998
UIMP, Palau de Pineda, Valencia, Spain

OBJECTIVES

The analysis and management of risk and the mitigation of hazards have
recently become very important due to
the greater complexity of systems of all kinds and the increased
potential for disasters on a world wide scale.
People have become much more concerned about risks to health and the
environment and are requiring answers,
not only for the present generation, but for generations to come. There
are many questions regarding the safe and
efficient use of resources in addition to environmental concerns
generally, which fall within the province of risk
assessment and management.

The development of computational methods and the ability to model
systems more precisely now enable hazards to
be quantified, their effects to be simulated and risk analysis to be
pursued with greater accuracy, providing for more
effective risk management. These developments are not only important for
all areas of human endeavour, but have
particular relevance to environmental issues where the risks involved
are increasingly seen as substantial. Effective risk
management and the mitigation of possible hazards have become a high
priority of government concern.

This Conference is concerned with all aspects of risk analysis and
hazard mitigation ranging from specific
assessment of risk to hazard mitigation associated with both natural and
anthropogenic hazards. Strategic issues
of sustainable development, efficient use of resources, energy economics
and education are also of interest.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Papers are invited on the topics outlined and Abstracts should be
submitted no later than 17 February 1998.
Abstracts should state clearly the purpose, results and conclusions of
the work to be described in the final paper.
The final paper should emphasise results of work wherever possible,
rather than simply methodology. The final
acceptance will depend upon the full-length paper.

SELECTED CONFERENCE TOPICS

Estimation of Risks
Data Collection and Analysis
Risk Maps
Case Studies
Risk Modelling with Spatial Statistics
Data Collection and Structural Analysis
Mathematical Modelling of Risk

I don't know of any papers on lead shot count data in soil, but we may be
doing a similar analysis in the near future. If you come across any papers,
please pass them along as we would be very interested. Thank you.

You may want to review Francis Pitard's book "Pierre Gy's Sampling Theory
and Sampling Practice: Heterogeneity, Sampling Correctness, and Sampling
Practice" (CRC Press, 1993), or my book, "Geostatistical Error Management:
Quantifying Uncertainty For Environmental Sampling and Mapping" (Van

Does your work have anything to do with the Connecticut Coastal Fisherman's

Could anyone give me some advice on modifying the source code for GSLIB
executables (for a DOS-based PC) to allow more observations to be included?
We have successfully modified "gamv3m.exe" to allow more observations, but
when we try to modify "ktb3dm.exe" to allow 1500 observations instead of
500, we get the following error message:

"run-time error M6101:MATH
  -floating-point error: invalid"

We get this error message regardless of the number of observations in the
dataset.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Does anybody have a "gridding" and/or modeling
program ( hopefully fortran source code ) that will allow
input of station data ( wind speed & direction ) and
output a grid of wind speed, and direction?

With or without terrain corrections from DEM data.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Dan,
You may want to have a look at the program for circular statistics ORIANA,
available as a shareware from

Greetings,
I have recently begun working with IRIS Explorer for visualization of 2 and
3-D data. I am wondering if anyone out there has taken output files from
GSLIB simulation codes (in Geo_EAS format) and brought them into IRIS
Explorer? If so, could you please contact me, or respond to the whole
group. I would be especially interested in any data scribe modules that
might be available for accomplishing this task.

thanks, Sean
