This month Andy Gelme of Geekscape will be giving a presentation on his
recent experiences with Content Management Systems.
Note the date is the first Thursday of October, rather than the last
Thursday of September - my apologies for this. I'll try and settle the
meeting dates down again from now.
Presentation Abstract:
----------------------
CMS in general, Daisy in particular

Content Management Systems, especially implemented using PHP, have
become very popular and feature rich. But, what if you wanted to extend
or integrate your CMS with your other systems and applications ... and
your preferred weapon of choice is Java ?
The Daisy CMS is based on top of Cocoon 2, OpenJMS and JBDC (MySQL).
Daisy and Cocoon provide a good separation between content, logic,
presentation and layout (via XSLT). Daisy also provides clean
separation between the content repository and the Wiki-like, web based
user interface.
It allows customization and extension at several levels. From simple
skinning, through to Java APIs, as well as the ubiquitous XML / HTTP
APIs. Extensions can also be made via the Cocoon pipeline. There is
also the capability to create different Daisy UI clients using Java
Swing or even Flash.
This presentation will delve into the technical details of performing
such customizations, including some of the pros and cons, and gotchas.
Having a flexible, well-supported, reasonably engineered, open-source
content repository in your armoury is a good thing (IHMO) !
