Web Development with Helma

There has been a recent surge of interest in more light weight approaches for rapid web application development, highlighted by the rise in popularity of RubyOnRails, especially amongst the Java/J2EE developer community.

But using a framework like RoR means Java developers need to learn not only a new language, but a new class library and completely different ways of working, giving up their very valuable experience and knowledge of the Java and J2EE.

Helma (http://dev.helma.org), a server-side Javascript web development framework offers a compelling alternative. Built on the Java platform and using technologies (Servlets, JDBC, etc) familiar to Java web application developers, it provides much of the same functionality as RoR while still letting Java developers have easy access to any Java libraries they need. Likewise, using Javascript as the scripting language means that Java developers have a more familiar language to work with and one they may already be familiar with if they are building AJAXy, Web 2.0 style applications.

This talk will give a brief introduction to Helma; a mature, open source web development framework providing a rich set of features for web application development and deployment.

It will cover what Helma is and where it came from, how to quickly get up and running, and then demonstrate some of Helma's simple yet powerful features by building a fully functional web application in minutes. It will also touch on Helma's numerous extension points, advanced features, where future development is heading and provide pointers to where to find more information.

Speaker

Maksim Lin is a long time Java developer. He has worked on both small and large J2EE applications as well as Enterprise Integration projects in the telecoms industry. He also dabbles from time to time in J2ME and has even been known to compile a C app or two.

For the past 2 years he has been doing something completely different: working as the Web Applications developer and administrator at The National Gallery of Victoria, building web applications for the public website as well as in-house applications used within the Gallery. For the last year, he has been a Javascript convert, learning the intricacies of the language, the power of the Helma framework and the pain of browser incompatibility.

Hi all

Last months slides from Maksim's talk are now up on our website. You can find them at: https://victorianjug.dev.java.net/PastEvents.htm

Out of interest Maksim gave his presentation using an Asus Eee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC). In addition to the presentation, he compiled code, ran Eclipse, and also the Helma/Jetty server. Performance seemed quite acceptable. Not bad for a $450-$500 laptop! If I were a Sony executive I would indeed be worried.

Iff you are lucky enough be attending JavaOne, Jetbrains have told us of a $100 discount to anyone visiting the conference this year. To take advantage of this make your way through the site to register or just go to: https://www28.cplan.com/javaone2008/srvreg and enter the code: ECXH66.

Additionally, JetBrains are going to be flying their development teams from St. Petersburg to JavaOne. If you would like to talk with them at an informal Q&A session, please let David Booth, of JetBrains, know, by sending him a short message at david.booth@....

At the recent Sun Tech days in Sydney I was lucky enough to see Mike Cannon-Brookes present on Grails. He was very, very, enthusiastic about it, and mentioned that Atlassian are using it internally.

With this months talk we get to understand an important part of the engine that powers Grails.

Date:   Thursday 24th April, 6:15-6:30pm Start Time.

Topic: The Groovy MOP

Groovy brings the power of metaprogramming to Java through an extensive API.

A metaobject is an object that describes another object; a metaobject protocol (or MOP) sets out the rules for altering this description. The Groovy MOP allows you to effectively modify the class of an object at runtime.

Dynamic languages represent a significant paradigm shift from the statically typed world of Java. Seeing the full potential of metaprogramming may require you to challenge the way you think about typing.

Speaker: Brent Snook

Brent has worked as a Java developer for several years but have recently been delving into more dynamically typed languages like Ruby or Groovy because of their expressiveness and power. He is interested in all things agile.

After this talk those inspired to find out more about Groovy and Grails can find the Melbourne Groovy group at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/groovy-melbourne

After a great conference in Sydney last year, The Continuous Integration and Testing conference (CITCON) is coming to Melbourne in 2008.  It's an open space conference where we all meet the night before to propose and vote for sessions then we drink, then we come back on the Saturday and talk or demo, then eat, then talk or demo than probably drink again....... [grin]  Seriously, it was an amazing experience last year.   The Denver CITCON has just happened (http://citconf.com/wiki/index.php?title=CITCONDenver2008Sessions) and June is not far away.
The venue is being decided but it is central Melbourne.  Best of all this is a free conference, running on sponsorship (contact me re potential sponsorship).  Last year folk came from the US, NZ and around Australia, and everyone thought it was great.  Registration numbers a a little low at the moment compared to the past conferences in Europe and the US and even Sydney, so if you want to come, register now. http://citconf.com/melbourne2008/
Venue should be announced within a week.
cheers,
Erik

Hi All,

Just a final reminder with regards to the upcoming Melbourne Java Power Tools Bootcamp, which is scheduled for September 23-26. There are still a few places left, so don't miss out! While in Melbourne, I will also be giving a talk on "Behavior Driven Development (BDD) in Java with easyb" for the Victoria JUG.

The Java Power Tools Bootcamp (http://www.wakaleo.com/training/java-power-tools-bootcamp) is an intense 4-day hands-on workshop covering some of the best open source tools for Java development on the market, based on the recently published Java Power Tools book (http://www.wakaleo.com/java-power-tools). This one-of-a-kind course takes you on a in-depth guided tour of some of the best open source Java tools around, showing how you can use them individually and together to write code better and faster. Some of the principal topics covered include:
  • Building a Java application using Maven 2 and Nexus
  • Using Maven's dependency management in Ant
  • Better Unit and Integration testing with JUnit 4.4 and Selenium, including TDD and BDD, and possibly a bit of Easyb!
  • Automatically enforcing code quality with CheckStyle, PMD, FindBugs and Crap4j
  • Automatically generating useful technical documentation with Maven 2, UMLGraph and SchemaSpy
  • SCM best practices with Subversion
  • Automating your build process using Continuous Integration with Hudson
  • Automated testing
  • Automated code quality audits and metrics
  • Automated reporting on project status
  • Automated deployment
This is a hands-on course that will give you techniques that you can take away and immediately apply in your daily development work.

Places are strictly limited, so book quickly! You can either book online or contact me directly.

Regards,

John Smart.

Hi all

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 30th October, for a 6:15pm start time.

The Topic: How does Java software evolve?

After a detailed and exhaustive study of the evolutionary history of over 50 Java software systems, we have identified a number of common patterns and discovered some techniques that can help detect abnormal code, machine generated code, architectural shifts and sudden changes to the underlying structure of the software system automatically.

The study investigated a some commercial systems and a large number of popular Java (open-source) components such as Hibernate, Spring Framework, Struts, Saxon as well as a number of Apache projects.

Projects selected for investigation were all non-trivial, had over 3 years of continuous evolutionary history and are in wide spread use. The talk will present the common evolutionary patterns (what is normal? What is not?), present a method for understanding software metric data (especially quick summary measures that are simple yet powerful) and discuss techniques that can help discover "interesting" aspects of a software system which can help improve risk/change management practices.

The Speaker: Rajesh Vasa

Rajesh currently works at Swinburne University of Technology as the International Program Manager. He splits his time between teaching, research and consulting (focused on Solution architecture and Agile methods).

The Venue:

Sun,
McKillop/Dunlop Room, Level 7,
476 St. Kilda Road

From my point of view, the evidence pointing to our need to have "god " classes and to congregate complexity...

These are thought provoking points that challenge my basic assumptions.

Those of you who look at our web site will have noticed that this months meeting has been pushed back to January.

This is because on Thursday night the father of Eclipse, Dave Thomas, will be addressing Enterprise Java Victoria on the topic of cloud computing. And then, straight after that he will be addressing the scrum user group on the topic of managing agile development in the large.

We figured that there might be an overlap of interest for some of the regular attendees to our meetings, and thus moved our meeting to January.

If you would like to see Dave Thomas talk:

Enterprise Java have opened up their registrations to the AJUG. Unfortunately there is a charge: $25. On the upside, the $25 covers the costs of drinks provided after the talk. The Url for registering is: http://www.gener8.com.au/ej2711.asp

The scrum user group do not charge for entrance: and are happy for anyone on this mailing list to attend their meeting. The Url for their group is: http://scrum.meetup.com/12/

Note that the scrum user group have not yet updated their pages to reflect Dave Thomas's talk to them.

Yours
Martin

PS: If you don't know about Enterprise Java Victoria, you can find out more (and subscribe to their mailing list) on their home pages at: http://www.enterprisejava.org.au
PPS: Our next talk is on December 4th, at Aconex.
