Am I alone in thinking that Silverlight is just another browser plug in?
The only pluses I can see is that I can possibly deploy a smart client application over the internet.
Also I can code against it in C# (big deal).
I do not want to learn XAml full stop and the tooling painfully is just not there.
how will not silverlight not have the same problems inherent in flash?
To my mind the things that are happening in the Javascript and browser space with things like canvas (please IE8 adopt this), JQuery etc., etc., etc far surpass the problems associated with plugins and as such more deserving of my free time.
I think the hype surrounding silverlight is ridiculous and the learning curve just to big for the return.
Have I missed something or is it as I suspect all the book sellers and conference speakers who are creating this buzz.
In my mind JavaScript is about to erupt as the next great language.

I'd say that if you know WPF, then you'll probably be productive on Silverlight too. Having said that, I must say that it still hasn't convinced me too. -- ...
I agree about XAML - UI definitions in XML has always been a bad idea. For transitions and animations maybe not so much. For RIAs Silverlight does have a great...
Personally, I find XAML very natural way to think about UI.It fit closely with the way web UI are built, and I find it very amusing to be able to do things...

At this point, I think you're going to see a lot more people learning Silverlight, and then realizing it's easy to build things in WPF, than going to other...
my expectations are none. I expect it to be on power with and with possibly inferior tooling to flex. but i've read things like "this will change the way we...

You're not alone. There seems to be great interest in Silverlight from the "traditional" developer market, where windows applications have been their mainstay....
There is a side issue of whether or not WinForms developers will/should learn WPF (I think we will have to). If you assume that learning WPF will be mandatory,...
As a previous post said, it appears to be an attempt to get windows forms on the web.Web forms was a similar attempt which has now seen its day. Silverlight...
I'm quite sure that Silverlight is not here to fight with Flash, to tell the truth silverlight video streaming isn't bad at all. I'm sure SL come to life only...
You are not being fair to Silverlight. What its not: Windows forms on the web XAML is very expressive and absolutely wonderful to vreate usr interfaces with. I...

Something that to me is critical for rich applications, does SL supports rich clipboard actions? That is, I can post a picture there? Or a file? That, for me,...

AFAIK, it doesn't. Nor does it appear to support context menus. Perhaps silverlight apps sould be deployable like adobe air apps? Click-once failed for the...
Not to mention that if/when Silverlight has an offline story, it's an ideal way to distribute smart client apps. Click once apps never seemed to work as well...
