GJJC 1 revisited - Correction   Message List
Reply Message #18690 of 23779 |
Hi all,

Re my previous email, I've just realised that I made a couple of errors
calculating the visual magnitude of GJJC 1. The PN is even fainter than I
had thought! Conclusion number 1 in my previous email should read:

1. The nebula itself is very faint. Borkowski et al. (1993ApJ...402L..57B)
give a total [O III] 5007 flux of 1.8-2.3 x 10^-13 ergs/cm^2/s. Adding in
the flux from the [O III] 4959 line gives a total apparent visual
magnitude of ~17.7 (V = 18.6). Under the best of circumstances, a PN this
faint is probably visually unobservable even with a filter. The bright
background in the cluster makes the task impossible. The nebula is almost
undetectable in an HST V-band image because of this background.
