CBET 1867, issued today, reports that Berto Monard in South
Africa has found a likely supernova in Messier 66. He reports the
magnitude as 15.8, i.e. rather faint, but it is possible at least
that it has been caught in the early stages and could brighten
considerably. If it's an unobscured type I event, it ought to get
up to mag 12 or so. The position is given as 11 20 17.0 +12 58 47
(J2000), nominally 28" east and 42" south of the nucleus of the
galaxy (NGC 3627).
