I was looking at the latest Hubble Heritage image release of a galaxy I'd
never heard of called "Hoag's Object" and wondered, as always, what if
anything could be seen visually.
According to NED this galaxy is PGC 54559, is 17' x 17' in extent and has
an integrated magnitude of 16.
The galaxy has a bright core that is apparently detectable visually, but
it is the outer ring that interests me. The ring shows up fairly well on
the first generation DSS. Has anyone been able to detect it visually?
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Matthias, Thanks for the links. Looks like I was wrong in thinking a larger scope would be needed to see the ring since Uwe Glahn saw it in a 16" scope....

Hi Uwe, You are right. Like Howard, you saw a disk not a ring. I guess seeing Hoag's object as a ring with a bright center is a challenge for the big scopes....

I'm sure no one would be more amused at the interest in this galaxy than Art Hoag. He used to be the director at Lowell (mid-1970s to mid-80s), though Hoag's...
