Just thought you might like to know that I have released a new beta of
AmiPodder 1.5 to my testers.
I have a few more changes I want to make and I'm sure there will be
bugs to fix but it's a step towards the next release.
Thanks for your support,
Robert

This is how adding a channel used to work, I changed the process to
reduce the number of clicks needed to add a channel. I think the code
for the old method is still there so I could easily change it back.
Does anyone else have any preferences about this?

That's a really good idea and something I would use myself. If it's
not too complicated to add I'll see if I can include it in the 1.5
release.
Thanks for the suggestions,
Robert
I can't remember if I've mentioned these before, but here goes:
1. I find the method of adding a new feed by entering the url first and then
clicking 'Add' counter-intuitive. Would it be possible to instead have another
button below the Channel list, i.e. 'Edit' 'Remove' and 'Add' so that when
'Add' is clicked, a requester pops up allowing the url to be entered?
2. I would love to be able to organise the channels into categories rather than
having one long list. Is this planned?

Well there are a few usability improvements in the new version which I
think users will like. It also works properly with podcasts which redirect
their downloads to a different filenames which some people may need.

In that case perhaps I should have released 1.5 as it was, nasty bugs was
a good description! Hopefully they're all fixed now!
Thanks again,

Sorry you're not getting much feeback Robert. I have tried to let you know of
any features I thought could be improved, but the problem is that AmiPodder
now seems to do everything I think I need. Of course, as soon as you add
another feature that becomes indispensable as well :-)

Thanks for your support and don't worry, I'm not abandoning
AmiPodder. All I meant was that when I get no comments for months on-
end about AmiPodder it is easy to think that no one cares about a
new version. Conversly, when people (like you) contact me about it

Well, as Total Amiga 24 is now nearly completed and AmiRevival has
been canceled (which while sad means I don't have to prepare for the
show) I reckon I should be able to get a new release out sometime in
August.
Cheers,

That sounds interesting (I hadn't heard of Skypecasts before), what
are you planning to discuss on the 'cast?
01:30 GMT +10 is 16:30 BST (GMT +1) so I would normally be at work at
that time during the week. If you hold a 'cast at the weekend I'd be
interested in joining in.

Hi All,
Sorry it's been a while since I've posted here and even longer since the last
AmiPodder release. I was busy with Total Amiga 23 (out now!) and then went away
on a great holiday visiting my folks in Oz.
Any how, I've now started working on AmiPodder again and am hoping to release
version 1.5 in the next few weeks. Already implemented are the following:
Support for redirected downloads where the filename in the URL does not match
the file downloaded. This fixes and on-going problem with the "Verge of the
Fringe" podcast and would have fixed the problem with the "Amiga Demo Podcast"
Red_Mellons reported only they seem to have fixed the feed so it works with
AmiPodder 1.4 (perhaps in response to your A.org postings Red?). Currently this
feature is only implemented for URLs containing a ? character (which often
indicates the request will be redirected) as it requires AmiPodder to query the
web server which takes time. If anyone has an example of a podcast that uses
redirected URLs without ?s in them then please let me know.
Supports HTTP proxy servers (requested by Thomas Wiard).
Fixed a bug which caused downloads to fail if the URL contained an = sign.
Now correctly recognises x-audio and x-video MIME types.
Added progress bars for slower operations (requested by Red_Mellons).
As usual, I'm very keen to hear suggestions from you as to other features you
would like to see. Please also send any bug reports and the URLs of any podcast
feeds that don't work with AmiPodder. Anything you suggest or report now has a
good chance of making it into 1.5.
Thanks

What's happening here is that the download URL in the podcast feed (the
AmigaDemoPodcast_DivX.divx?d=15 one) is being redirected to the actual file
(002_sota.divx). As this happens in the download program AmiPodder doesn't know
anything about the change of filename. I could possibly work around this by
having AmiPodder "sniff" each download to see if it is going to be redirected,
however this might have a significant performance penalty.
>> While I'm here, why is it necessary to 'Check Downloads'? Would it be
>> possible for AmiPodder to do this automatically after downloading?
This is another "symptom" of using external programs to download. AmiPodder
fires off the download but doesn't have any way to tell that the program has
completed downloading. The check downloads function checks to see if the
expected file exists and if it is the expected size. You can set the download
check to happen every few minutes on the "Automation" tab of preferences which
makes it work more automatically.
Both of these problems would be fixed by including an built-in download manager.
Unfortunately coding a multi-threaded download manager (needed to prevent
downloads locking up the GUI and for multiple downloads to occur at once) in
AREXX is a decidedly non-trivial task :-(.
Hope that explains it,
Robert

Checking the status of the files, Amipodder states the files name as
AmigaDemoPodcast_DivX.divx?d=15, but the file actually saved is 002_sota.divx,
so AmiPodder returns a file size of 0.00 KB.

They download ok (I use wget), but then when I 'Check Downloads', their status
stays as 'Queued'. Is their something special about these files which
AmiPodder can't handle?
While I'm here, why is it necessary to 'Check Downloads'? Would it be possible
for AmiPodder to do this automatically after downloading?

I'm not aware of any Amiga software that will play AAC so unfortunately
the answer is no. However, very few podcasts are available only in AAC
format, there is almost always an MP3 option. In some ways it is fortunate
for us that the iPod is the only music player that supports AAC as most
podcasters include MP3 support for listeners using other players.
If anyone is aware of Amiga software that supports AAC (perhaps MPlayer
does) let me know and I will add support.
With regard to the downloads, I think that the original poster is under a
misapprehension as to how iTunes podcasting works. Apple does not host the
podcasts themselves, iTunes downloads them from the podcaster's site just
as AmiPodder does.
BTW... Now Total Amiga 23 is finished, AmiPodder development will resume.
I have completed some work on 1.5 so now would be a good time to send in
suggestions for the next release.

I don't know how other podcast utilities handle these types of files, or even

I was intending to use it for 'cleaning up' after removing channels, so your
suggestion of making 'remove channel' do that would be even better.
But as you've mentioned it, yes it would be nice to be able to delete invidual
