I have editted menu.lst and replaced all instances of "512" with "256" and I
have now made progress.
I am able to load the latest kern310 from the grub menu but only get visible
screens when using the "naughty" cards or "matrox" cards options from grub,
and the best resolution I can manage is 640x480x8 (256colours) - anything
larger I try to set up using Picasso Config comes up with an error that the
card doesn't support that size screen or not enough memory on card to fit
that screen. The card I am using is the FX5200.
I tried another AGP card (GeForce 2MX N3) but can't even get a signal out of
it with Amithlon, and when I reload WinXP using the FX5200 the display
disappears and I have to hotplug the monitor cable into the 2MX where I
then see a message "The ATI Control Panel Failed to initialise because no
ATI driver is installed". The screen res is pretty low (obviously due to
no driver being installed for that card). I suspect the 2MX is alot older
than the ATI 9600LE AGP card that was originally installed in that PC.
From memory (after reading all the docs & guides quite some time ago) I
think I need to install all the updated picasso drivers to be able to get
more usable screen modes with the FX5200. Is that correct?
Rich.
