Artistic Styles and Coinage   Message List

Dear List,

I have recently beocme intruiged by artistic styles and iconography.
Especially the development of the Byzantine and Sasanian styles from
Hellenistic Classical imitation towards the rigid, symmetrical pieces
seen from the 6th century onwards.

Roman coins are a good focus since they show the development from
realistic indvidualism (1st century AD), to idealized but still
indivudial (2nd century) to more and more symmetrical (inlcuiding the
change to facing coinage 4th century) culiminating in the coins of
Justin I and Justinian.

What I am wondering is has much been written about the style changes?
Also, has much been written in numismatic literature about the
interpretation of the varying styles?

Would list members have any recommendations as to publications that
would ellaborate on these topics? I will undoubtedly go through the
NPI search as well but any persoanl recommendations would be greatly
appreciated.

Best Regards

Jorg Lueke
