Dear Peter, and others who have written to express scepticism,
I quite agree with you that the interpretation is probably far-fetched.
That's why I added "believe it or not."
It is interesting how often archeologists and historians have tried to detect
evidence of early coin collecting. We believe that coin collecting seems to
have begun in China before anywhere else, but one would expect a collection to
be mounted on boards or stored in drawers in a cabinet, and that remains of the
storage would be apparent.

the long period of circulation of Chinese cash coins. The excellent new
book on Silk Road coinage published by the British Museum notes that
cash coins are often of limited use in dating archaeological sites just
for this reason. Evidently, 1000 year old cash coins could be found in
circulation in the early 20th Century China.
