On 1 and 2 November, 2007, the Belgian School of Athens is pleased to
invite you to a conference on
Royal Cult and Emperor Worship: From Classical to Late Antiquity
organised by the assistent director of the school, drs. Panos Iossif.
The cult of the leader's personality was a widespread phenomenon
during the past century, but not as particular and contemporary as
one may believe. It started in Antiquity in Near Eastern
civilizations, reached its peak in the Mediterranean World after the
fourth century B.C. and declined during the Roman Empire.
The purpose of this colloquium is to highlight aspects of the cult of
kings and emperors in the Greco-Roman World, through a wide
range of approaches. Moving beyond the traditional conception of the
divinisation of the king and emperor as a purely political
expression, the colloquium discusses the pattern of the creation and
originof leader cult as well as its larger political, economic,
religious, social and other implications. A further aim of the
colloquium is to create a network of collaboration between
specialists to investigate if common patterns can be
identified between royal Hellenistic cult and later emperor's
worship.
