Grape growing and winemaking friends!
Our hosting company corrupted our links database about
two weeks ago and we are unable to restore it from our

We are currently re-spidering websites as quickly as possible
but would appreciate your help.
You can help us to improve the grapeseek links database by taking
a moment to click on the following URL and adding your favorite
grape growing or winemaking website to our directory.

Your participation is greatly appreciated and we thank you in
advance for your support!

this I apologize.

My name is Oliver Weston and I am an undergraduate in the UK.
I am studying Biological Sciences, specialising in wine. For my
project I am trying to produce a data base of vines grown in the UK.
I have some resources such as Galets books, but am finding it hard to
find other material. Research papers I have found are mainly on DNA
and other means of identification. My aim is to produce a data base
based on physical identification, almost like a field guide for UK
growers.
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes
Oliver Weston.
yes. and i left a standing order there for them to notify me if it
appears.
thank you!

Thank you for such a quick reply. Will definitely get teh catalogue from
Davis (while i debate the increased price of the newer version). We have
a research farm and among crops have 26 varieties grown in Washington.
I have collected leaves from each for a display and was thinking it would
be interesting to learn more about how they relate, etc.
Again, thank you!

in the University of California at Davis Bookstore under the title "Grape

request their special catalogue of viticulture and enology books.
I think you can also reach them at generalbooks@...

Hi Mr. White and all. I am just joining the group now as the majority
of our work is done this year. We have desperatly been trying to
obtain a book on ampelography and are finding it difficult to locate
one. What progress has Lucy made in the translation of Galet's book
and do you know when it will be published? And her rootstock book?
Perhaps Kevin Kerr could advise us of the availability in Canada.
I am trying to identify a wild vine that is growing in the woods
around
my 10 acre vineyard (hybrids and vinifera) in southeastern
Pennsylvania. It is obviously Lubrusca and does not look like
riparia, rupestris or berlandieri. The shoots are long and stringy,
smooth with felty hairs. Deep green-color leaves, orbicular, felty
and
somewhat like Galet's Lubrusca leaf illustration but with an
overlaping
petiolar sinus that is lyre-shaped if your open it up. Leaf shape
reminds me of the medium, barely three-lobed leaf of Berlandieri.
Leaf
edges are extremely small, pointed teeth. It's really not like
anything
in Galet or Grapes of New York. Can anyone hazzard a guess?

Patrick,
Your english is better than many "English speaking" people online...
If anyone posts in French here, I'll answer them but in English. My
french writing is terrible but I hope to have more practice and time
to improve it this next year as I enable french speaking features to
our many websites. I still don't have Galet's books but will be
ordering them shortly and can't help you with the measurement
issue or would address it now for you...Our group is still very young.
WELCOME!....and I hope to visit you in Belgium someday or have
you over to Germany in the Stuttgart area.
Sincerely,
Michel White.....a French Canadian Yankee now living in Germany....

hello
I have just joined the group and have no question for the moment. I'm
from the french speaking part of Belgium and member of an association
of amateur winemakers called 'Cordeliers de Saint-Vincent'. Our
colleges and I grow some vines of unknown origin. I intend to search
for the right name for these "cépages". I will tell the group
about
this later.
I use the books of Pierre Galet but need some more information on how
to take the measures for leaves. I will also ask details about this
soon.
I'm not so keen at english, so is there anyone to correspond in
french with?
fish,
We could start with a photo of the leaf, growing tip and clusters to
get a good idea but genetic testing is the only way to tell for sure...
Start with the pictures.

The berries looks like : pear shaped yellow grape about 0.5inches big the cluster is loose and not heavily loaded with berries the leaf has a jagged leaf edge.
Can anyone help or do you need a photo ?

I'd like to hear from grower/breeders that can help me
choose the correct parent vines for breeding work. I
am interested in Muscat wine crosses for cool, region
one climates.

Hi Roy!
Welcome to our merry little group.
My interest here is in the cataloging of grape varieties
and to complete the best work yet in this field with better
texts, online information and photographs than even
Galet's work....just so you know. J
Michel.....also, it's very confusing that your messages come in
as being from Adrian Smith....

I'd like to correspond with anyone who has used the
Asiatic species Vitis Coignetiae in breeding. I have a
few and I think the species has some value for cooler
regions like the Puget Sound area of Western
Washington and, perhaps even further north, Like the
Matanuska Valley of Alaska?
I have, at present an excellent female hybrid of
Coignetiae x Elmer Swenson's 2-4-7.

Hi everyone!
I was just wondering if any of you have access to a copy
of Pierre Galet's book. I am looking to purchase one but
at least need to see how the pages look and how the
pictures were taken.
I'd grapely appreciate if someone could scan a few pages
and email it to me as I'm preparing to do some intense
photography of new grape varieties to add to grapepictures.com
and for future ampelography reference.
If anyone also knows where I can find a copy of it,
I'd appreciate the info. I've searched the internet
but to no avail.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Members!
I just spoke to Lucie who is really swamped with her
"Black Goo" project right now and finishing up her
book. She also ensured me that she's interested in this
group and will participate as soon as she is freed up
a bit.
She'll probably allow me to develop her websites for
her and get them started in the near future and
I, for one, am anxious for her to have time to renew
this project and I'd like to see grape improvements
over the next few years in ampelography come out of
our membership.
I hope you will all be patient and remain as members
and also participate here as often as possible!
I am still looking for a copy of Galet's "Practical
Ampelography..." and would appreciate any help in
finding one...
I still plan to try to photograph up to 2000 more
varieties this fall in Siebeldingen at the Geilweilerhof
Research Center. Lucie has told me to photograph the
leaves and growing tips very closely and I assume that
this is the easiest way to distinguish between varieties...
Your input is welcome!
Michel White
...welcome and hopefully we'll do good things here before long...
I set this up for Lucie Morton and Debbi Dellinger but they
are both finishing Lucies new book on rootstocks and will
be a few days before they join us...
Glad to have you aboard!....and our membership will increase
substatially when Debbi forwards me the list of members of
the old society to invite and when I get a chance to promote
this...
sincerely,
Michel
