International Conference on Paphlagonia and Pontus in Antiquity and the
Early Byzantine Period (7th c. BC-7th c. AD)

May 31-June 4, 2008 / Izmir, Turkey

First Circular - Call for Papers

Dear Colleagues,

An international conference on Paphlagonia and Pontus in antiquity and the
early Byzantine period (7th c. BC-7th c. AD) will take place between May
31st and June 4th, 2008 at the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey.
The conference is jointly organised by the Department of Archaeology,
Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir and The Centre
for Classics and Archaeology, School of Historical Studies, University of
Melbourne. This conference will be organised as a part of the Paphlagonia
Project, a long-term archaeological field project in central Paphlagonia
<www.paphlagonia.com>.

The deadline for paper proposals, January 1, 2008, is fast approaching. We
invite papers from scholars and graduate students on any aspect of
Paphlagonia and Pontus in the above period. The conference aims to bring
together participants from throughout the world to discuss a range of
issues concerning this North Anatolian landscape and encourage dialogue
amongst and between Classical and Near Eastern archaeologists, ancient
historians, classicists and all other disciplines from Classical, Near
Eastern and Anatolian Studies.

Paphlagonia is an area of the central Black Sea coastal region of Turkey,
situated between Bithynia and Pontus, and separated from Galatia by an
eastern outlier of the Bithynian Olympus. It is a mountainous district
with the Halys as its chief river; along its coast were a number of
colonies, including Greek Sinope. It was a contact zone between the Greeks
of the Black Sea region and the Iron Age population of Central Anatolia.

“Pontus” is a geographic term of with a variety of usages. In ancient
times the Black Sea and its shores were referred to as the Pontos, but the
name eventually became more specific to the area of northeast Anatolia in
late classical times. The term did get a definite connotation of being a
separate state after the establishment of the Kingdom of Pontus, founded
beyond the Halys shortly after 302 B.C. The kingdom of Pontus was
henceforth ruled by a succession of kings, mostly bearing the same name
until 64 B.C. In our Conference Pontus refers the eastern Black Sea coast
of Turkey where has a steep, rocky coast with rivers that cascade through
the gorges of the coastal ranges. Because of these natural conditions, the
Black Sea coast historically has been isolated from the Anatolian interior
proper.

The conference seeks papers on both the adaptation and change and the
continuity of culture(s) over time and space, and on the construction of
ethnic identities in the culturally diverse area of Paphlagonia and
Pontus. Participants are encouraged to explore all kinds of evidence on
the region and its relations with other areas (Galatia, Bithynia,
Propontis, Thrace, Colchis/Georgia, Armenia, the rest of the Black Sea,
etc.), including textual, archaeological, artistic, anthropological,
numismatic and epigraphic, from Archaic to Early Byzantine times.

Two post-conference excursions are planned on June 3rd to both of the
archaeological museums of Izmir and to the excavations at the Agora and
Old Smyrna as well as on June 4th to Miletus, homeland of numerous Greek
poleis in the Black Sea area. For the duration of the Conference,
archaeological material from fieldwork of the Paphlagonia Project will be
made available to Conference participants for inspection.

Papers may be given in any Western European languages (English, German,
French, Italian, Spanish) and in Turkish, although English is preferred
for both oral and poster presentations.

We hope that you will be able to participate.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the

Excavations at Zincirli

David Schloen, Oriental Institute

Zincirli is a 40-hectare Bronze and Iron Age urban center located
immediately to the east of the Amanus mountain range in Gaziantep
province of southeast Turkey. Ceramics found by the early excavators
reveal a long sequence of occupation in the Bronze Age, and a
flourishing city-state ruled by Luwian and Aramaean kings after the
collapse of the Hittite Empire. The Oriental Institute excavations at
Zincirli allow us to investigate key research problems such as the Late
Bronze-Iron Age transition, the ethno-linguistic dynamics of Neo-Hittite
city-states, and Assyrian imperial administration. The data generated by
the planned long-term excavations at Zincirli can make significant
contributions to our understanding of the social, political, and
economic organization of this pivotal region in the Bronze and Iron
Ages. This lecture will be the first report on recent excavations at
Zincirli and will showcase the finds of the 2007 season.

This lecture is free, open to the public, with reception to follow.

Land matters: Thoughts on the analytical limitations and potential of studying
land ownership in prehistory

Abstract

The
inextricable connection between people and land (in terms of ownership
or some other form of belonging) has been a cornerstone of
archaeological practice from the very onset of the discipline.
A host of studies has argued about land ownership on the basis of the
simple co-existence of artefacts on the landscape (i.e. association of
‘sites’ with land, the very much debated
‘territories’ and ‘hinterlands’ around archaeological sites etc). Other
studies have tended to extrapolate land ownership from more indirect
means, as in those cases where the

discovery
of storage facilities within a building is automatically taken to imply
land ownership. However, the association between people and land is not
always easy to substantiate empirically.
Although current theoretical constructs (i.e. “regions”, “sites”,
“households”) may generally underline critical aspects of the use of
material culture as an identification strategy, their
focus is usually misplaced in that they take the links between land and
people as a given. Our aim is to demonstrate that the relationship
between people and land in the past is an analytical
issue which calls for clarification not only at the level of definition
but also methodological applicability. We would like to draw attention
therefore, to the processes by which links to land are established, the various
forms that such links take and how they can change through time.

The session has no chronological or geographical restrictions and focuses on
three interrelated themes:

Critical assessment of previous approaches regarding land ownership in
prehistory.

Introduction
of new ways of thinking about prehistoric land ownership. How can we
define land ownership? Can we distinguish between different forms of
access to land in prehistory? How are all those detected
archaeologically?

Presentation
of empirical examples and case studies with innovative ideas and
methodologies employed to define and identify land ownership.

Apologies for cross posting

The first submission deadline for the AIA's 110th Annual Meeting, to
be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 8-11, 2009, is less
than two weeks away. The schedule for submission of sessions and
papers has been revised from past years. Please refer to the
explanation below to determine if you need to submit a paper by the
March 30th deadline. Please note that all Joint Colloquia must be
submitted by the first deadline.

Submission Deadline Changes
The general deadline is being pushed back to late August to allow
summer fieldwork to be completed. There is also an early deadline for
Joint Colloquia and for any non-U.S. Resident who will need an early
decision so they can apply for a visa. If the individual is part of an
organized session, the entire session must be submitted by the early
deadline. A link to the U.S. State Department site listing the latest
visa requirements for the U.S. is provided on the AIA website. The two
deadlines are:

Sunday, March 30, 2008
This deadline is applicable to all Joint AIA/APA Colloquia, and any
other organized sessions or open session submissions from a non-U.S.
Resident needing an early decision to acquire a visa. Submissions not
meeting the above criteria, but submitted prior to this March 30th
deadline will be considered in the Fall.

Sunday, August 24, 2008:
This deadline is applicable for all other submissions including
colloquia, workshops, open session papers, posters, and roundtables.

The submission system will be open from February 1 through August 24,
2008. If you expect to be in the field without internet access you may
submit your abstracts early, but you will not be notified of the
PAMC's decision until October 1, 2008.

The full Call for Papers and submission instructions are available on
the AIA website (www.archaeological.org/annualmeeting). Please be sure
to review these instructions prior to submitting your abstract or
session. All submissions must be made by means of online submission
via the AIA website. All submissions, of course, must pass the PAMC's
vetting process to be put onto the program. As with past meetings, all
submissions must be made electronically. The online submission forms
and supporting documents are available on the AIA website.

>Between 2003 and 2005, various remains of sculpture and fragments of an
>important inscription in the Old Phrygian language were unexpectedly
>found during excavations at the sixth century B.C. walled city on
>Kerkenes Mountain in the highlands of Central Turkey. These unusual
>finds have a significant role to play in the interpretation of the site
>and the interpretation of Phrygian history and culture. Large-scale
>sculpture in the round and small reliefs have distinctive
>characteristics so far unattested within territory inhabited by Phrygian
>speakers, while the extensive inscription names individuals so far
>unknown. Together, they attest to an ambitious and distinctive identity
>of power at this relatively remote mountaintop city, which may be
>equated with the strongly fortified place of Pteria mentioned in
>Herodotus, and which may have flourished for a brief period between the
>death of King Midas of Gordion and the conquering of Anatolia by the
>Persian King, Cyrus the Great.
>
>This volume presents these striking new finds, all of which come from
>the Monumental Entrance to a sector of the city known as the Palatial
>Complex. An introduction to the archaeological context is followed by a
>detailed catalog of the sculpted fragments, associated architectural
>fragments, and the inscribed fragments. Within the catalog there is
>erudite discussion of comparanda aimed at placing the unique material in
>its wider cultural and historical context, as well as a tentative
>reconstruction of the major pieces into a single monument. Rounding off
>the work is a commentary on the Phrygian inscription by Prof. Claude
>Brixhe. The volume is profusely illustrated with line drawings and
>photographs of every fragment together with a set of color plates that
>highlight the violence done to the monuments when the city was looted
>and burnt in the mid-sixth century B.C.. A Turkish summary is provided.
