Re: [ancient_waterways_society] Sable Island

HI
There are more than one Sable Is., so I am told. I will check on the co ordinates.   If this is the same- it would be interesting as a friend sent a photo of a large stone with a hole chiseled into the lower side.

Subject: [ancient_waterways_society] Sable Island

There is an island (really a sand dune that has persisted over 500 years) in the Atlantic Ocean at the edge of the continental shelf about 100 miles offshore from Nova Scotia.  Sable (French = "sand") Island is well placed to have been encountered if/when ancient mariners sailed from the Mediterranean to the St. Lawrence seaway.  I wonder whether there could be copper oxhides under that sand, or offshore...

I've just written a blog post about Sable Island .  It's too long to reproduce here; those interested can peruse it at the link.  I'd appreciate any comments (here, or at the blog) if anyone knows whether any marine archaeology studies have been conducted around this island.

There is a "Cape Sable Island" which has lots and lots of rocks on it. That's probably the one your friend visited....
