But this is my Intro...

Hello from upper British Columbia, Canada. We live on a 40 acre farm
in the middle of the bush. My guy is a enviromental logger, which
basically means he brings in beetle killed dead trees before we have
the worlds largest forest fire.

I am a Editor for a organic homesteading magazine and farm caretaker
and dog trainer. Until an accident almost 18 months ago, I was a
veterinarian technician for livestock, small animals and worked for a
zoo(and lived at) with African Ungluates (think weird looking cow
type creatures from Africa).

We have cattle (beef and milk), milk goats (doubles as meat goats),
horses, turkeys and heirloom chickens (dual purpose), Californian
meat rabbits, 6 sled dogs and a farm dog, seasonal hogs and 2 house
cats (if they are not house cats, their life expectancy is from 24
hours to 30 days).

I have run sled dogs for 6 years now and use them around home for
chores as our snows are deep. It is much nicer to hitch 2 dogs up and
haul the feed bags, the millions of gallons of water (so it seems
anyway), hay and firewood around.

I have been toying with the idea of a team of ox, as I do drive the
horses now and again, though they do not enjoy it. I like keeping the
old arts alive. I have 3 calves to be born here soon and I plan on
starting to ground train them almost before their mother's dry them
off. I like having all our cattle halter broken anyway, as it makes
life much easier.

We have about 200 trees of our own to take down which have been
killed by Mountain Pine Beetles, which is a huge epidemic in western
Canada. I have used a horse for pulling some of the logs out, though
we have a D-3 Cat. But I like the quiet and the working with the
partnership of animals. Also I will be able to get around in areas
they cannot get the tractor or the cat. We do utilize our wood for
pole fencing, our 12x17 foot root cellar, my 16x16 ft writing
cabin/guest house and we are bringing in a portable mill for making
lumber for the siding of our cabin and for making new barns. I can
see using oxen for alot of this.

So is anyone out there and still doing this? At the same spot I am
or....???
