Tenzicut ~ Great fun to get started..My neighbor saw a milk cow & horse plowing together in Germany during the war..Was very surprized as mostly horses & mules were here in the Ozarks..I have a pic of my Dad with his oxen..he used upside down horse collars & drove them to a wagon..My brother in Montana is considering using a cow for work so he gets 2 uses for having one. He'll enjoy hearing about your work with yours.. Lots of sled work ahead for the 2 of you....   GrannieD   (VDavis)

*** Fun is mostly the reason I want to do this, since we also have a
large tractor. I hate starting the tractor in the winter however and
it is also rather a scary one to use.

I got my idea from seeing alot of the draft bovine in Indian and
other places which obviously had an udder on them and yet were
plowing fields with a small child on its back directing it.

I plan on building various sized yokes for her and as I have a forge,
should be able to manufacture the hardware for said yoke/s.
Traditionally they must have used them in our area in northern
British Columbia as there are enough yokes in barns and on gates. I
have been looking for someone in my area (which means most of BC) who
is using oxen as draft animals, though I did not really get laughed
at by the horse teamsters, they did look at me like "WHY do you want
to do this!?!?!?" I told them... because I can??

I also do have horses I use to pull with, though they are saddle
horses I put into (single) harness to pull small items out of our
bush land when it is too muddy to use the tractor.

The calf is growing, it has been below freezing every night so the
garden is officially dead now, so I can work on ore training with my
calf.

There is no reason that cow can't work, you will just
have to be careful of her utter when she comes into
milk.

She should be about the right size for a family garden
and other chores around the homestead.

Steers are traditional but you use what you got. Have
fun with her that is the most inportant part.

You should be able to find a single yoke with a little
research, or plans for one online. Then just hook her
up with a singletree just like a horse, You will be
suprised what she can do.

Enjoy

Life's journey is not about arriving at the grave in a well preserved body, but
rather sliding in sideways, totally worn out, screaming - "HOLY COW MAN, WHAT A

A few monthgs ago I was talking to some people in here about starting a
oxen team and I have just now started one half of my team. She is a
she.. which I know is not traditional, but if we have steers we need to
eat them. This way she can be a triple purpose animal and give us a
calf, milk and help around our homestead.

She is half Jersey and half Gelvieh and she was born on the 28th of
May. Due to a stupid incident on her mother's part, her mother is now
in the freezer and the baby "Blossom" is bottle fed as well as on 4
milk goats. She does not care where the milk comes from.. as long as
she can get to it.

I have her halter broken already and we go for walks. I am picking her
feet up and making sure to brush her most every day.

I think I am going to have alot of fun with this.

This message is about Human beings, Democracy, UNHCR, Refugees, The Iraqis,
Islam, Kurds, Human rights, Respect, Money, Donations, Angelina Jolie,
Pavarotti, Giorgio Armani, Donors, Peace, History, Campaigns and about you if
you care about these words.

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:
http://freeweb.jamieweb.com/lebanon/human-buttons.htm

Where you can read the rest of this message as web page.

Also you can read my new campaign 'Urgent, we need smile' here:
http://unews.esmartdesign.com/smile.html

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my
campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.org especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:

The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html
Here is another example: Burmese Refugees Withdraw Protest Against UNHCR
http://www.mizzima.com/archives/news-in-2005/news-in-april/12-April05-22.htm

"We make demonstration and fast because the UNHCR office in Cairo did nothing
for our problem..." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4440730.stm

Together we will build better world.

You could reach me fast via this form:

The Spring 2007 issue of "Down to the Roots" magazine is
about ...well Spring!. It has finally arrived after a long and white
winter. Don't you just start itching for the leaves to bud out as
soon as it starts turning warm? Before it does, get the rest of your
fruit trees pruned. This issue teaches you how to prune your apple
and pear trees to perfection.. and start your seedlings indoors.

Do you have a breeding flock of sheep or goats? Keep this magazine
issue handy for quick reference in case of birthing problems. Learn
the dying art of using a Lucet and how to build one. This is so easy
to use, get your children to work on making cord to keep them
distracted while you get to work on your spinning wheel. Or make two
and Lucet together. We have a new contributor, who specializes in
writing books about Wild Edible Foods, come see what he has to say.

As in every issue, there are articles of keeping a naturally healthy
home, fun projects for children and natural beauty care are included.
We really had fun with the kid's project!! We hope you will too
...and like always so much more, cram packed from cover to cover,
without those annoying ads getting in your way.

Come check us out at http://www.downtotherootsmagazine.com and see
why we are now in 40 US States, 5 Canadian provinces as well as 6
other countries around the world. We were recently nominated for the
Best Home Based Business for 2006 and another upcoming nomination for
a British Columbia wide recognition.

*** Being a newer farm here, we do not have the large animal handling
equipment either. As a vet tech, I know the importance of being able to
handle animals with or without equipment because as a vet tech, it was
my job to get squashed over the vet *S*

<...An old draft horse man told me ages ago that the

*** We had a half-a-horse who stayed with us for a year who did not
tie. It is a pain. I know why she did not tie.. she had wonderful
ground matters elsewise, but I saw how the lady treated her horses when
they were tied. She used to beat them with a lunge whip. I am glad that
horse is out of there. I would have worked with her on it, but that is
the year I was recovering from a fractured back.

<I like cattle & pigs to be easy to move & handle >too.

**** I took the easy way out last time. I was in the bathtub when I
heard the alert last summer that "Kid" accidently let a pig out. My hon
and the 2 boys went up on the rodeo to get the pig, grabbed it by its
hind legs and carried the protesting pig back into its pen. (large
pens.. they are about 100x60 for 3 pigs). I got to sit and watch the
show out the window from the comfort and cleanliness of the tub. I only
felt a little guilty ;op

<..It is encouraging to see you are doing your building from the

*** Well otherwise it is not fair to the animal or the next person whoi
gets the animal. And I have found that it takes at least 6 weeks for a
human and an animal to become a team, no matter what the job.

<Do you make your own equipment ...sleds & >harness...halters..

*** I have ..3 years ago, my 1st woodworking project was a dogsled. If
you want to see it, go to

scroll to the bottom picture.

<how about hoof work.?

*** I do on my goats and horses (Amy helps me sometimes as she is good
at it and I cannot bend over long, maybe next year) and when "Daisy"
(the Jersey cow) was down, we should have nipped and rasp her toes. But
with all the leg massages I gave her when she was down, I noticed I can
pick up her front feet now. None of the cows really need it yet.

*** I make sheep, cow and horse rope halters and have written an
article about it in one of my magazines. They are so much better than
to buy, but I do have a boughten nylon turnout halter for my milk cow.

I do plan on making yokes for calves and as they get bigger.. make
bigger ones.

We have "Daisy" our Jersey family milk cow, "Tractor" & "Mudbog" who
are huge range cows who were recently given to us as they are of
dubious age (10-16 yrs old) and with 400 head of cattle at their
former home, their previous owner wanted them to go to a home with
less competition. he gives away 10-20 of them a year and we got 2 at
the end of December. "Daisy" I brought home on October 1st.

All of them are due to drop their calves anytime in the next day to
weeks, but with "Daisy" being down for 15 days and having to do major
nursing care on her, we have finally got to be friends so I went out
and brushed her for the first time. Though she is our milk cow, we
just got her in October as a wild range cow who hae never been
touched by a human. In 7 days I had her halterbroke and she still
hated humans, though she would mind the halter. Recently ith her
being down and me sleeping with her 2 nights in a row under the
blankets so the coyotes would not get her and 15 days of leg
massages, petting and general poking at, as well as lifting her twice
a day in a sling. She has decided I am not too bad after all .. and I
involve food. All the leg massages paid off as I pushed my luck today
and got to pick up both her front feet and brushed her back legs and
I do not have any nice bruises to tell the tale.

"Mudbog" came over to see why "Daisy" was getting all the attention
and dubiously I brushed one side and up near her tailhead, she arched
to me so far I thought she was going to go over.

As soon as I figure out if these girls are going to chase me all
around the pasture to murder me once their calves are on the ground
or not, I plan on halter breaking all the calves. Even if I was not
going to teach them to be a draft team, I would have done this anyway
as I have worked on enough livestock over the years, I like working
on livestock who tolerates humans working on them. And my rule is..
the bigger they are, the better they better behave.

I am starting to be impatient for waiting for calves. They will be
the start of all our animals crops for the year.

Hi ~ When I was a kid I trained a set of hamshire barrows to pull a coaster wagon..We hitched the goat to the wagon & did all kinds of things with the ponies, but we were past the time when animal power was generally used...I have a clipping of a guy who had a fancy spotted harness made for some large barrows & a fancy hitch wagon...about as odd as the 20 sheep hitch that was made up by someone looking for fun...
We are going backwards as fast as others are going "foreward"...  My ponies are a practicle size for the hilly area we live in that is more for "patch " gardening than field work..Its much like the small farm -- peasant farming where the ponies were originally developed in Europe or the small mule here..Its easier for me to handle this size at my age...  It seems we need each other for encouragement...  GrannieD

*** Don't overlook goat and dog power either. And it was told there
was a swine harness around here when we bought the place as she used
to use pigs to do something around here (what I have no idea).. but I
have seen swine hooked to plows in old photos.

We have deep snows in the winter and winter can last 8 months here,
so hitching up a single to a couple dogs to my main sled which has a
5 foot bed on it, will carry down 2 days worth of wood for the
woodstove, haul 500 pounds of feed up to the barns (ok.. that is a 4-
6 dogs pull), a couple square bales if I have them (we tend to have
1,200 pounds rounds) or packed loose hay and six 5 gallon water
buckets, which I would really not have to slog through snow with.

I mainly want to make a draft ox team just because. I do want to use
them for work around here, but not on a full time basis.. and for
posterity.. and keeping the old ways alive.

Welcome Tenzicut ~  I'am hoping we get more folks who actually use bovine & equine partners on the homestead.. I have ponies & donkeys ,but in the past have trained steers to drive..I'm in the Missouri Ozarks with varied terrain that makes it handy to have a smaller animal for choring..We ride a lot as we have areas of Nat'l Forest that are right next to us ...I'm older so have to be contented with far less than I used to be able to do..tho I work with a few green ponies & love to help people wanting to learn I don't take on big projects...It sounds like you are well equipped to handle your 40acres..I'm going to suggest to my brother in Montana that he join us as he thinks he wants to use bovine power on his 20 acre patch of heaven...I told him he could use a better harness set up than a yoke & am showing him from Small Farmers Journal what I mean..I'll look up the issue ...   I'll get back here more often... But this is my Intro...

Hello from upper British Columbia, Canada. We live on a 40 acre farm
in the middle of the bush. My guy is a enviromental logger, which
basically means he brings in beetle killed dead trees before we have
the worlds largest forest fire.

I am a Editor for a organic homesteading magazine and farm caretaker
and dog trainer. Until an accident almost 18 months ago, I was a
veterinarian technician for livestock, small animals and worked for a
zoo(and lived at) with African Ungluates (think weird looking cow
type creatures from Africa).

We have cattle (beef and milk), milk goats (doubles as meat goats),
horses, turkeys and heirloom chickens (dual purpose), Californian
meat rabbits, 6 sled dogs and a farm dog, seasonal hogs and 2 house
cats (if they are not house cats, their life expectancy is from 24
hours to 30 days).

I have run sled dogs for 6 years now and use them around home for
chores as our snows are deep. It is much nicer to hitch 2 dogs up and
haul the feed bags, the millions of gallons of water (so it seems
anyway), hay and firewood around.

I have been toying with the idea of a team of ox, as I do drive the
horses now and again, though they do not enjoy it. I like keeping the
old arts alive. I have 3 calves to be born here soon and I plan on
starting to ground train them almost before their mother's dry them
off. I like having all our cattle halter broken anyway, as it makes
life much easier.

We have about 200 trees of our own to take down which have been
killed by Mountain Pine Beetles, which is a huge epidemic in western
Canada. I have used a horse for pulling some of the logs out, though
we have a D-3 Cat. But I like the quiet and the working with the
partnership of animals. Also I will be able to get around in areas
they cannot get the tractor or the cat. We do utilize our wood for
pole fencing, our 12x17 foot root cellar, my 16x16 ft writing
cabin/guest house and we are bringing in a portable mill for making
lumber for the siding of our cabin and for making new barns. I can
see using oxen for alot of this.

So is anyone out there and still doing this? At the same spot I am
or....???

have to turn up a single day this time around to get my final credit points. Now
I am fully qualified in a BA and on the hunt for a new job! I'll let you
guys know how I do, but just thought I'd mention this now since they helped me
out. If any of u interested in getting a BA or something similar without having
to go through all the hassle they put you through in US institutions give
these
guys a call 1-801 697 0461 . They got me through in around a month.
