simply use to make my e-mailings more universally legible. While I do check it

Books in BAR now include some titles available from the UK. This is for the
convenience of my European subscribers, as well as allowing for the listing
ofmore titles. These books will be indicated with a (UK) designation. Release
dates will generally reflect the U.S., except for exclusively UK titles. My
apologies to my European readers this time: I was not able to include those
availabilities. If you are interested, feel free to e-mail me.

Work on my first book, being co-written with Gini Scott for Paragon House, is
taking up much of my “free time”. I would expect these to go to bimonthly for
the next several months, although Iwill try and provide at least two featured
titles each time. If anyone wants to be included in the book, please let me know.
I have already begun doing interviews. Everyone who is interviewed should get a
chance to review their interview prior to inclusion. Also, we will not include
comments criticizing explicitly named other living people. The book is about how
being involved with UFOs (as a researcher and/or experiencer) has affected
people. While it will provide some resources and some overview, the main
goalwill be to let the readers meet the people involved.  Interested parties
should e-mail me at UFOBOOK@....  I also plan to be at the Bay Area UFO Expo
(http://www.bayareaufoexpo.com) in SanJose, California on August 26 and 27.
Ihope to be busy doing interviews for the book (there is an exceptional
line-upof speakers), but drop in and see me there.

If you have books to recommend, please let me know. If you would like to be
named as recommending it, include that information as well and tell me youwould
like to be cited.

AlienAgenda (paperback)
Subtitle: INVESTIGATING THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL PRESENCE AMONG US
by Jim Marrs
656 pages: central photograph and illustrations section, extensive
sourcesreference, bibliography
Paperback, August 1998

”Only those persons whose outlook prevents them from dealing honestly with
themassive amount of documentation and reports collected over the past
fivedecades still cling to the idea that nothing soars in the skies of Earth
butman’s imagination.”
Jim Marrs, ALIEN AGENDA

Jim Marrs is well known as the author of CROSSFIRE, the book on which
OliverStone based J.F.K.  He turns hisinvestigative skills to the question of
UFOs and aliens being real.  Well, it’s a bit had to call it a question, the way
Marrs looks at it. No more than two sentences into the Introduction,Marrs
proclaims, “UFOs are real.”  In away it’s sort of nice to dispense with any
debate and plunge right into thewell-written survey of the “evidence”.

The book is broken into 12 chapters, plus the Introduction and Appendix and
anEpilogue.  There are extensivequotations from prime sources in such areas of
interest as crop circles, remoteviewing, and the Face on Mars. It’s a good
survey of the material, and evenwidely-read individuals will benefit from the
clear citing of dates and otherfacts involved.

One of the main themes of the book is that of government conspiracies.
Thepresentation of sources seems sometimes skewed in that direction.  For
instance, Ivan Sanderson, a celebritynaturalist (with best-selling books and
national tv appearances), leadinginvestigator of weird happenings (especially
cryptozoology with a notedemphasis on hairy bipeds like Bigfoot and the
Abominable Snowman), is listedsimply as a “Former British Naval Intelligence
officer”.  While it is possible that Marrs simply tookthe reference provided by
Alan Landsburg, Landsburg himself is cited asproducing THE UNDERSEA WORLD OF
JACQUES COUSTEAU and THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICSERIES, it isn’t mentioned that he
produced the IN SEARCH OF… series.  It seems unlikely that Marrs was unaware
ofthat when he is referencing a book based on that show. Generally, sources
arepresented as mainstream and when possible, government-connected.  While it
all seems to be true, there doesseem ironically to be a hidden truth left
unspoken.

There is also an examination of spiritual issues that seems somewhatincongruous
with the emphasis on facts in the beginning.  Still, I can unreservedly
recommend it topeople who want a good read and accurate reporting. Just like
with anythingelse, I’d simply caution not to see it as the whole story.

TheLittle Giant Book of UFOs (paperback)
by Jenny Randles
511 (small) pages, Index, Illustrations
Paperback (small format), April 2000

Randles is one of the most prolific writers on UFOs (as well as some
othermysteries). She has a thorough knowledge of the topic, in particular from
aEuropean perspective.  She shares itfreely in the book.  While a lot oftopics
are covered in this book, each one is done in a fairly surfacemanner.  This is
what we used to call apopcorn book when I was a bookstore manager: there’s
nothing to slow you down, you can run right through it with very little
substance.  But who doesn’t like popcorn?

I suppose most people don’t pick up a “seed catalog” like this and read it
fromcover to cover.  That’s the way Itypically approach them. It would make a
great bathroom book for people whowant to just skip around here and there. There
are definite sections to it. Part one is a chronology of UFO events (although
most cases or incidentsonly get a paragraph or so).  Part twois devoted to
definitions and a look at the evidence, with examples of eachtype.  Part three
looks at seventeendifferent countries and the UFO experience in them.  A nice
touch is the contact information for investigators inthose countries.  The
fourth part  list UFO investigators and organizations, often including contact
information for them as well  The several appendices are short articles on such
topics asreporting UFOs and recognizing some common causes of mistaken UFO
reports.

Sit down and have fun with this one. Some of it you just have to take her word
for…there are quite a fewstatistics thrown in, without an explanation of how
they were derived.  Still, I found it well worth the money.  If you are looking
for a more in depth book, consider the trade (large-size) book THEUFO BOOK
(paperback) by Jerry Clark.
