Books mentioned in BAR can be ordered on most e-mail
systems by clicking on the
hyperlink title. This will take you to the book at
Amazon.com. You can read
more about it at that point and decide if you want to
order it. If you do, you
add it to your &quot;shopping cart&quot;. Then, if you
want another title
mentioned here, please click on it in this post. If
you have questions, please
e-mail Bufo at <a

Books in BAR now include some titles available from
the UK. This is for the
convenience of my European subscribers, as well as
allowing for the listing of
more titles. These books will be indicated with a (UK)
designation. Release
dates will generally reflect the U.S., except for
exclusively UK titles.<br>
<br>
I apologize for this issue being late: it’s been a
very busy time.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>November and
December were combined into one
issue last year, and I expect to do that again this
year.<span

first BAR since I upgraded
to Word 2000.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>In an attempt to make the
links clearer, this is being sent a different
way.<span style="mso-spacerun:

subscribers, but may
make it worse for AOL.<span style="mso-spacerun:

know if you have problems with it.<br>
<br>
I’m reading some books I expect to feature in the near
future. It is my policy
not to feature a title until I have read all of it.
One of those titles is <a

Planets (paperback)</a> by Jan Lamprecht...look for
the review in the next
couple of issues.<br>

If you have books to recommend, please let me know. If
you would like to be<br>
named as recommending it, include that information as
well and tell me you
would like to be cited.<br>

Subtitle: An Account of Unknown Creatures Sighted by
Many Respectable Persons
Between 1638 and the Present Day<br>
by J.P. O’Neill<br>
August 1999<br>
256 pages<br>
Sightings table (with page references), bibliography
and website directory,
illustrated, some photos, NO index<br>
<br>
Right from the beginning, people who sighted sea
serpents were ridiculed.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>While seeing Elvis
has taken the number one
spot on the debunkers “guilt by association” hit
parade, sea serpents are still
towards the top.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>If you want to tarnish
a subject as the product of gullible overcredulity ,
you can toss in, “Oh, and
I’m sure it was riding on a sea serpent” to bursts of
derisive snickering.<br>
<br>
Why should this be so?<span style="mso-spacerun:
yes">  </span>As J.P. O’Neill
ably documents in this volume, there are plenty of
sober sightings by reliable
individuals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>What many of them report
does not seem unreasonable.<span style="mso-spacerun:
yes">  </span>O’Neill has
made a point of reproducing the original stories in
most cases, often with
little commentary.<br>
<br>
She focuses on the reports that have come from the
Gulf of Maine, which runs
essentially from Massachusetts up to Nova Scotia.<span
style="mso-spacerun:
yes">  </span>These include the ones in the area of
Cape Ann and Gloucester,
which made national news, particularly in 1817.<br>
<br>
The book is straight-forward, respectful, and not
sensational.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>It is, in a sense,
very New England.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>It says that “this
is what it is” and brooks
no nonsense about it.<br>
<br>
O’Neill’s research (and that of others, whom she
graciously and properly
acknowledges) goes far beyond the observations of
hardworking fisherfolk and
land-dwellers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>She does an excellent
job in setting the scene, and showing us the people
and the politics that were
involved.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>As
with many of the best
books on these topics, it is ultimately not about “his
Snakeship”, but about
our reactions to him.<br>
<br>
The quibble factor here is so low it’s not even worth
bringing up.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Even the lack of an
index is ameliorated by
the sightings table.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>The book is an
excellent read, even for people not generally
interested in these things.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>For people who want
to see wild speculations
or extensive analysis, it may not be enough.<span
style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>However, the vast majority will enjoy this
well-written accounting of
what has been called “the Great Mystery”. <br>
