CFZ Press are delighted to announce the publication of this new book by one of the world’s most renowned authors of books on cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. CFZ Press are quite possibly the world’s most prolific publishers of books on the subject, and this is only the first of several books planned by Dr Shuker.
This delightful book is the long-awaited, greatly-expanded new edition of one of Dr Karl Shuker’s much-loved early volumes, Extraordinary Animals Worldwide. It is a fascinating celebration of what used to be called romantic natural history, examining a dazzling diversity of animal anomalies, creatures of cryptozoology, and all manner of other thought-provoking zoological revelations and continuing controversies down through the ages of wildlife discovery.
Handsomely supplemented by a vista of enchanting Victorian engravings to evoke the spirit of the period from which the inspiration for this book is drawn, Extraordinary Animals Revisited offers an enthralling introduction to a veritable menagerie of truly astonishing beasts:
From singing dogs to serpent kings, pseudo-plesiosaurs to quasi-octopuses, hounds with two noses and birds with four wings, the Sandwell Valleygator and New Mexico’s medicine wolf, cobras that crow and snake gods that dance, giant solifugids and rodent colossi, devil-birds and devil-pigs, furry woodpeckers and marsupial hummingbirds, archangel feathers and the scales of the Eden serpent, scorpion-stones and elephant-pearls, tales of the peacock’s tail, parachuting palm civets, missing megapodes, blue rhinoceroses, glutinous globsters, anomalous aardvarks, a platypus from Colorado, man-sized spiders from the Congo, de Loys’s lost Venezuelan ape, Margate’s marine elephant, a flying hedgehog called Tizzie-Wizzie, a mellifluous mollusc called Molly, India’s once (and future?) pink-headed duck, the squeaking deathshead, the vanquished bird-god of New Caledonia, and much much more – all waiting to amaze and amuse, a pageant of natural and unnatural history.

For an in-depth interview with Dr Shuker to mark the release of the book:
This release was sent to me by Jon Downes. While I am familiar with him, I have not yet read this particular title and can not offer an opinion on it. Still, I thought the list might be interested in it. If there is any weird formatting in the e-mail, blame me and not him...I copied it over. :) ============================================================ THE OWLMAN AND OTHERS: 30th Anniversary Edition Published by CFZ PRESS ISBN: 978-1-905723-02-7
Thirty years ago this week, one of the strangest episodes to have happened in Britain in recent history took place. Two young girls playing in the churchyard of Mawnan Old Church in southern Cornwall were frightened by what they described as a "nasty bird-man" flying over the church tower. A few weeks later it was seen again, and the witness said: "It was like a big owl with pointed ears, as big as a man. The eyes were red and glowing. At first I thought that it someone dressed-up, playing a joke, trying to scare us. I laughed at it. We both did. Then it went up in the air and we both screamed. When it went up you could see its feet were like pincers!" Her friend added some details of her own: "It's true. It was horrible, a nasty owl-face with big ears and big red eyes. It was covered in grey feathers. The claws on its feet were black. It just flew up and disappeared in the trees."
These were the first of a series of sightings of what has become known as `The Owlman of Mawnan` - a series of sightings that has continued to the present day. These grotesque and frightening episodes have fascinated researchers for three decades now, and one man has spent years collecting all the available evidence into a book.
To mark the 30th anniversary of these sightings, Jonathan Downes (46), the Director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology - the world's largest mystery animal research group - has published a special edition of his book `The Owlman and Others` which was first published in 1997. However, to mark this special anniversary, he has allowed artist Mark North (30), full access to his archives for the first time, and the book is packed with over 300 large format pages of rare and never before seen pictures, interviews and memorabilia. "Mark has done a wonderful job" says Jon. "I never realised there was so much stuff in my archives until he gathered it all together. Re-reading my source material for the first time in ten years made me realise quite how horrifying some of these incidents were"...
A witness who saw the creature in 1995 likened it to"a vision from hell", and another witness (identified only as `Gavin`) describes how his Owlman sighting in 1989 has blighted his life ever since. The book also tells the story of Morgawr - the Cornish Sea Serpent, and the summer of 1976, which was not only the hottest on record, but was the year that the whole of southern Cornwall went crazy!
"I have explored various explanations for the events in the book" says Jon, "and I am not completely sure which one is true. But I know one thing for sure. I wouldn't let my children play alone in those woods...."
Yes, it’s been a year since I sent the last one out.Well, I don’t think I’ll be accused of putting too much into your inbox.:)If you are getting this directly from me, it’s because you are subscribed to Bufo’s ANOMALIT Review.See instructions at the bottom of this e-mail for how to unsubscribe.
There are many more items listed at Bufo’s WEIRD WORLD Books.I intend to do a fair amount of updating by the end of the year.Suggestions for items are always welcome.
The books in this listing were released (or re-released) in 2005 and caught my eye.I have not had the opportunity to read all of them, so I would consider this a heads-up rather than a recommendation.I hope the brief insights I provide into the books prove useful to you.I do get a small amount back from Amazon if you order directly through the links in this e-mail, but feel free to use alternate methods.
Oh, and speaking of alternate methods, I’m going to try sending this a different way.If the links don’t work, I may need to do a re-send.
Hunt for the Skinwalker : Science Confronts the Unexplained at a Remote Ranch in Utah (paperback)
We’ve all heard of places where the foundation of reality seems to have cracked a bit…haunted castles, mysterious swamps, or, in this case, a ranch with such a wide variety of high strangeness that it seems straight out of Lovecraft. The difference in this story is that it isn’t just tales of random travelers.Robert Bigelow, a millionaire with an interest in UFOs, purchased the ranch in 1996 in order to finance an investigation of the phenomena.George Knapp, investigative reporter for KLAS-TV, who did a lot to publicize Area 51 and Bob Lazar, and Colm Kelleher, Ph D., a biochemist and author who has spent extensive time at the ranch, report on the happenings.
Shadows Dancing : True Tales of Shadow People (paperback)
Harvard may have felt that it was important to release a well-written book by someone who would come to a conclusion that alien abductions were not “real”, in the traditional sense of being a phenomenon where the observer was less significant to what occurred than the observed. They may have been concerned about the attention that the late John Mack brought to the university in conjunction with his books on abduction. While Mack’s books were not from the viewpoint of scientifically supporting the “cosmic bus theory” (physical beings like ourselves get into a spaceship and fly here from another planet), he concluded that the reports were most likely not merely psychological, or represented a psychological pathology beyond that which had previously been identified.Clancy also appears to believe that the phenomenon of the belief warrants further investigation, while remaining in the skeptical camp about weird origins for it.Though the books may at first glance appear to be opposed, the differences may be more of attitude and degree than it seems.
Ah, Ivan Sanderson…he was the introduction many people had to weird subjects.Whether it was the Roger Patterson Bigfoot film in ARGOSY and other ABSMs (Sanderson’s coinage for Abominable Snowmen), globsters, OOPTHs (out-of-place-things), OINTs (Other Intelligences), teleporting ants (one of what Sanderson simply called “things”), or this book on USOs (Unidentified Submarine Objects), Sanderson brought a new eye and a new word to the subject. He was a naturalist who would appear on talk shows, with a sort of Steve Irwin popularity. He became, in a sense, the paranormal Isaac Asimov, writing knowledgeably on a wide variety of topics. But unlike Asimov, he also had the “been-there” authenticity of Gerald Durrell.Childress (who wrote the introduction to this edition), continues the tradition of adventure/speculation for today’s audiences.

A Paranormal Casebook : Ghost Hunting in the New Millennium (paperback)
When you’re dealing with the unearthly, it’s nice to have someone who is grounded.Loyd Auerbach is one of the world’s leading ghostbusters, but don’t picture Venkman, Stantz and Spengler.Rather than coming in with proton packs blasting, this is an investigator who puts the welfare of the person claiming to have the experiences first I have some acquaintance with Loyd, and not only is he intelligent, he’s insightful, which may be more important in this field.Famous Fortean John Keel once titled a chapter, “To H*ll With the Answer! What’s the Question?”Auerbach exemplifies this when he asks, “Where do ghosts buy their clothes?”I’ve heard Loyd go from this apparently silly question to a very important observation about ghosts.Get the straight story from one of the most original thinkers in this often uncritical arena.

An American Demonology : Flying Saucers Over the White House (paperback)
I don’t often note works of fiction (although I do include them sparingly on the site), but this is one I do want to recommend. It may be the most Fortean work of fiction to date, or perhaps Keelian (as in John A. Keel) might be a better adjective. It does a much better job of evoking the feel of the Keelian universe than THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES movie (which was also written by series creator Richard Hatem). It’s not for everybody: you could be offended by its take on religion, as well as bothered by some scary stuff.I certainly wish they had given the one main female character more to do.However, I think it’s well-worth watching: my copy is making its rounds around people at my work.
Bufo’s ANOMALIT Review New and Notable Books of 2004
2004 saw the release of a wide variety of books that fall into the category of “anomalous literature”.Also called “metaphysics”, the “paranormal”, “anomalistics”, “new age”, “occult”, etc., these books cover topics that suggest that the world is other than what conventional wisdom tells us it is.
In the past few years, some trends have emerged. Two welcome elements have been the reprinting of older books, as well as new technology allowing for more access to smaller publishers. On the negative side, books in these areas seem to have significantly increased in price. What you will see here are the list prices: in many cases, the price when you click on the link will be significantly lower.
These propose alternate theories for the creation of the universe, the solar system, life, and/or society. They may invoke alien involvement and/or previous terrestrial super-civilizations.This category also covers purported evidence of civilizations on other planets of the solar system.

THE WATER-BABIES by Charles Kingsley
Cryptozoology is the study of animals unrecognized by science, including Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, etc. This original meaning has also been expanded to include strange animal behaviours, and what is called "fortean cryptozoology", in which the animals appear to be in some sense "paranormal."
Bigfoot (The Unexplained)

Parapsychology refers to mind-oriented paranormal phenonema, in particular: various forms of extra-sensory perception; psychokinesis ("mind over matter", the ability to affect the physical environment mentally); and "survival", which concerns evidence that the mind survives after the death of the body (such as ghosts).

TREND #1: COMMUNICATING WITH THE DEAD
This topic showed major growth in 2001, led by the success of John Edward. While ghosts and near-death experiences still were popular, it was specifically the living communicating with the dead that caught the book-buyer's interest. The old term for people who spoke for the dead was "medium" (since they were acting as a medium of communication), a contemporary one is "channel" (although channelers very often purport to represent non-humans). Perhaps thanatotranslators (from the Greek thanatos for death and translator) would be appropriate.
CROSSING OVER (hardback)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1588720020/bufosweirdworld
by John Edward
Released August 2001
This book, a tie-in to the author's show on THE SCI-FI CHANNEL (and syndicated), became the best-selling "new age" title at Amazon released in 2001. Anyone who hasn't seen the show might be surprised by its tone. This is not an in-the-dark seance with a some mysterious, exotic personality in a trance. John Edward is very modern: in fact, many of his readings are informed by popular culture. Rather than try to smooth talk people, he appears to get frustrated with them if they don't recognize what he is telling them. The premise is that he receives communications from people who have "crossed over", and that they try to prove to the living that the afterlife exists to show that they are okay. To do this, they reference quirky little details, like the name of a dog, or a specific meaningful item, such as a ceramic shoe. Edward is so often so specifically accurate, that the only reasonable way for it to be not real is if he is working with confederates or is given the information secretly ahead of time. While this book is not the careful work of his previous bestseller, ONE LAST TIME (paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0425166929/bufosweirdworld), fans of the show will enjoy it.

MYSTERIOUS AMERICA REVISED EDITION (paperback)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931044058/bufosweirdworld
by Loren Coleman
Released January 2001
Greatly revised new edition of a 1983 classic, this is much more than just a tour of spooky places. Coleman both investigates and looks at the overall picture, a rare combination. A great Fortean (one who is inspired by early 20th century writer Charles Fort) is, in a sense, like the schizophrenic math genius John Nash portrayed in A BEAUTIFUL MIND. They see patterns where no one else does, recognizing new mysteries to which later writers can add examples. This book introduced us (or brought attention) to kidnapping clowns, phantom kangaroos, and erratic crocodilians. While I did miss the illustrations from the original release, the new material (including giant catfish and the Minnesota Iceman) more than made up for it. The "seed catalog" style lists in the back of the book are exemplary, and Coleman's taken heat for his willingness to hypothesize. Being accurate while not losing his sense of fun makes Coleman one of the most popular Forteans writing today.

The Encyclopedia of Extraterrestrial Encounters : A Definitive, Illustrated A-Z Guide to All Things Alien http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451204247/bufosweirdworld
by Ronald Story
This edition released September 2001
This is an update of one of the great UFO reference works, originally released in 1980. While still significant, there are some interesting factors in this version. First, just the name of it shows a shift away from objectivity: from UFO to Extraterrestrial. Secondly, while there is a welcome amount of new material, there are some researchers notable by their absence. The first edition was remarkably inclusive. It will take a thorough reading to see if this one is more skewed by Mr. Story's own opinions. Still, it is a definite must-have for any library.

TREND#10: CROP CIRCLES
Crop circles, also known as "agriglyphs", are designs made in fields by flattening crops. They took a major hit in public opinion when a couple of people said that they had hoaxed them (although the claim was, itself, unbelievable as an explanation for all the circles). Reprint edition October 2001
Interviews with well-known investigators and authors, including Erich Von Daniken (superstar author of the 1970s who popularized the theory of Ancient Astronauts with his book CHARIOTS OF THE GODS? among others); David Morehouse (remote viewer, author of PSYCHIC WARRIOR); Jenny Randles, prolific British UFO author; and more.
This is not a mere "seed catalog" style listing, or a geographic guide. It is one of the truly significant books on weird stuff in America. Not very many books effectively define new mysteries, such as the Phantom Clowns and Mystery Kangaroos offered here. People who already have the original 1983 edition will be pleased with all the new material in this considerably revised and updated version.
"One measures a circle beginning anywhere." I don't know that I would begin with this book. It isn't easy reading, and can at times feel like wading through molasses. But unlike the empty calories of that sticky sugar, this is thick with import. It is a book (a combination of four books, actually) that has changed the lives of people. Significant, and yet fun: meticulously researched, and yet ironic; an inspiration, and a challenge to that inspiration all in one. Like quite a few other people in the world, I call myself a "Fortean", but even using that term is making a self-referential joke. Don't look for a simple time, here, but it is worth the effort.
Steiger has written well over 100 books on weird topics. He's also a frequent guest on the Jeff Rense radio show. Brad's world is definitely a weird one.
Here is a good one for someone who hasn't yet made a decision about the Loch Ness monster. Has sections with "good reasons to believe" and "good reasons not to believe". One of the better books on any of these areas.
Well-written enough for anyone to enjoy, whether they have an existing interest in sea monsters or not. This concerns the widely-publicized sightings off New England in the late 1800s.
Not exactly a ghost book, John is the very popular host of CROSSING OVER, a television program in which he acts as a medium, passing on messages from the dead to members of the audience.
This is the book I'm reading right now, and the one I read from in my October webcast of Bufo's WEIRD WORLD ON THE AIR. It's not a book about UFOs, exactly, but a collection of articles by someone recognized as a science journalist who writes about UFOs. Each article also has the story behind the article, which may provide considerable insight as to how things get published.
Bufo's ANOMALIT Review appreciates the patience of everyone on this list.

By John A. Keel
This reprint edition October 1991
275 pages
One of the true classics, a book that transcends its genre. It is a truly frightening account of John Keel's investigation of the reports of "Mothman" in West Virginia. Keel was supposedly the inspiration for Kolchak, the Night Stalker on tv. Unlike that show's monster of the week, this book deals with a variety of paranormal phenomena. Besides the ever-popular UFOs, this is the book that largely defined the (pre-movie) modern concept of Men-in-Black. While not for everyone, this is perfect for the avant garde person on your list, even if they have never read a book on these topics before.
Find out why I call myself a Fortean (although I do not agree with all things in his books). This is the author who really is the grandfather of all recent books on strange phenomena. It's not easy reading, but well worth it.

convenience of my European subscribers, as well as allowing for the listing
ofmore titles. These books will be indicated with a (UK) designation. Release
dates will generally reflect the U.S., except for exclusively UK titles. My
apologies to my European readers this time: I was not able to include those
availabilities. If you are interested, feel free to e-mail me.
Work on my first book, being co-written with Gini Scott for Paragon House, is
taking up much of my free time. I would expect these to go to bimonthly for
the next several months, although Iwill try and provide at least two featured
titles each time. If anyone wants to be included in the book, please let me know.
I have already begun doing interviews. Everyone who is interviewed should get a
chance to review their interview prior to inclusion. Also, we will not include
comments criticizing explicitly named other living people. The book is about how
being involved with UFOs (as a researcher and/or experiencer) has affected
people. While it will provide some resources and some overview, the main
goalwill be to let the readers meet the people involved. Interested parties
should e-mail me at UFOBOOK@.... I also plan to be at the Bay Area UFO Expo

AlienAgenda (paperback)
Subtitle: INVESTIGATING THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL PRESENCE AMONG US
by Jim Marrs
656 pages: central photograph and illustrations section, extensive
sourcesreference, bibliography
Paperback, August 1998
Only those persons whose outlook prevents them from dealing honestly with
themassive amount of documentation and reports collected over the past
fivedecades still cling to the idea that nothing soars in the skies of Earth
butmans imagination.
Jim Marrs, ALIEN AGENDA
Jim Marrs is well known as the author of CROSSFIRE, the book on which
OliverStone based J.F.K. He turns hisinvestigative skills to the question of
UFOs and aliens being real. Well, its a bit had to call it a question, the way
Marrs looks at it. No more than two sentences into the Introduction,Marrs
proclaims, UFOs are real. In away its sort of nice to dispense with any
debate and plunge right into thewell-written survey of the evidence.
The book is broken into 12 chapters, plus the Introduction and Appendix and
anEpilogue. There are extensivequotations from prime sources in such areas of
interest as crop circles, remoteviewing, and the Face on Mars. Its a good
survey of the material, and evenwidely-read individuals will benefit from the
clear citing of dates and otherfacts involved.
One of the main themes of the book is that of government conspiracies.
Thepresentation of sources seems sometimes skewed in that direction. For
instance, Ivan Sanderson, a celebritynaturalist (with best-selling books and
national tv appearances), leadinginvestigator of weird happenings (especially
cryptozoology with a notedemphasis on hairy bipeds like Bigfoot and the
Abominable Snowman), is listedsimply as a Former British Naval Intelligence
officer. While it is possible that Marrs simply tookthe reference provided by
Alan Landsburg, Landsburg himself is cited asproducing THE UNDERSEA WORLD OF
JACQUES COUSTEAU and THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICSERIES, it isnt mentioned that he
produced the IN SEARCH OF series. It seems unlikely that Marrs was unaware
ofthat when he is referencing a book based on that show. Generally, sources
arepresented as mainstream and when possible, government-connected. While it
all seems to be true, there doesseem ironically to be a hidden truth left
unspoken.
There is also an examination of spiritual issues that seems somewhatincongruous
with the emphasis on facts in the beginning. Still, I can unreservedly
recommend it topeople who want a good read and accurate reporting. Just like
with anythingelse, Id simply caution not to see it as the whole story.
TheLittle Giant Book of UFOs (paperback)
by Jenny Randles
511 (small) pages, Index, Illustrations
Paperback (small format), April 2000
Randles is one of the most prolific writers on UFOs (as well as some
othermysteries). She has a thorough knowledge of the topic, in particular from
aEuropean perspective. She shares itfreely in the book. While a lot oftopics
are covered in this book, each one is done in a fairly surfacemanner. This is
what we used to call apopcorn book when I was a bookstore manager: theres
nothing to slow you down, you can run right through it with very little
substance. But who doesnt like popcorn?
I suppose most people dont pick up a seed catalog like this and read it
fromcover to cover. Thats the way Itypically approach them. It would make a
great bathroom book for people whowant to just skip around here and there. There
are definite sections to it.Part one is a chronology of UFO events (although
most cases or incidentsonly get a paragraph or so). Part twois devoted to
definitions and a look at the evidence, with examples of eachtype. Part three
looks at seventeendifferent countries and the UFO experience in them. A nice
touch is the contact information for investigators inthose countries. The
fourth part list UFO investigators and organizations, often including contact
information for them as well The several appendices are short articles on such
topics asreporting UFOs and recognizing some common causes of mistaken UFO
reports.
Sit down and have fun with this one. Some of it you just have to take her word
forthere are quite a fewstatistics thrown in, without an explanation of how
they were derived. Still, I found it well worth the money. If you are looking
for a more in depth book, consider the trade (large-size) book THEUFO BOOK
(paperback) by Jerry Clark.

FEATURED TITLES:
MYSTERIESOF PLANET EARTH (paperback)
Subtitle: AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE INEXPLICABLE
by Dr. Karl P. N. Shuker
192 pages: Profusely illustrated, index, bibliography
What have you got to top that one?
H. Wells, announcer, in THE AMAZING COLLOSAL MAN, screenplay by Bert I.
Gordonand Mark Hanna
Our planet is a realm still replete with mystery, an island of inexplicabilia
drifting passively upon the ever-trembling currents of time that emanate fromthe
greatest undivined secret of all, which we call the universe for want of a
better name or definition, and it is sheer folly to profess otherwise.
Dr. Karl P.N. Shuker, MYSTERIES OF PLANET EARTH
This remarkable coffee-table style tome seeks to show those people who have
leapt beyond the mundane to land precariously in a zone of belief in suchthings
as UFOs and Bigfoot that they have merely attained the first rung of a ladder of
constantly-escalating-paradigm revisions.
Ah, now hes got me doing it! Just kiddingI love the somewhat high-flown
writing style of Dr. Shuker in thisbook. His point, well-made in the
introduction, is that most books on anomalistics repeat the same stories over
and over again. The good doctor (who isa well-known motorcycle-riding,
leather-jacketed zoologist who has focused on cryptozoology) seeks to provide an
alternative by deliberately coveringlesser-known mysteries.
While that might make you concerned that the subjects covered would be less
well-documented and lacking in evidence, that isnt the case. How many readers
are aware of the Hand of Fire? This is a phenomenon in which books are scorched
by what appears to have been a burning-hot hand. This is a case, somewhat like
crop circles, where it is the evidence that is predominant in the story. Shuker
fairly reports the work of Skeptic Joe Nickell in debunking several of these
stories. Is it the debunking that has kept this from being a classic mystery
in the popular books? Unlikely, since the debunking came fairly recently (1993,
Lookingfor a Miracle (paperback)). Maybe its the religious nature of the
mystery (which was believed to be caused by the hand of a soul in purgatory).
Religion is one area into which this book delves, and it has sometimes been a
delicate area of crossover for authors, although embraced by others whosought to
explain religious beliefs as being caused by UFOs or others.
In addition to the religious mysteries (which, according to the books
organization, fall into the supernatural), there are a total of five
othersections: the partner for the religious in the supernatural section is
filled with truly odd happenings, such as reputedly real appearances by
centaurs, misty monsters and blood-dripping invisible ones, and discoveries
inspired by dreams; the natural world has two sections, one on land animals like
blue tigers, and another on the sea and sky, including light wheels in the ocean
(although UFOs are essentially not covered); and another two sections for the
ancient world, including some unusual crystal skulls.
While one might argue a bit about what gets placed where, the book flows nicely.
The pictures, as has become a hallmark of Dr. Shukers books, are striking and
very well reproduced. The publisher, Carlton, can be commended for the
excellent production values.
While intended for an audience already-informed about the major mysteries, it
would be an eye-opening introduction for those just wondering what is out
thereas well. Shuker shows what happens whena good writer turns his attention
to fresh mysteries, and leaves the bounds of the known unknown. It makes for
a thoroughly entertaining trip that makes us wonder why certain things get a
following and become part of the unconventional wisdom, and why others dont.
WhereHeavens Meet (paperback)
by K.T. (Frankovich)
288 pages, no index, illustrations and photographs
I know you dont understand pain, Pete. Youve hardened yourself to it, like a
lot of people, by pretending it doesnt exist. So you convincedeverybody youre
a real tough guy, a strong man, real independent. And you gave up some of your
humanity, too. Well, I wont play that game. Ill cling to my humanity, and
fight for it if I must. I loved once, really loved. And now I hurt. And I
wont deny either of those things, or pretend they mean any less to me than they
do.
Keith/FOR A SINGLE YESTERDAY written by George R. R. Martin
What makes a life extraordinary? For some, it is a single moment different from
the rest, a sudden opening and shutting again of a door into a deeper reality.
For others, the fabric of their lives is woven from a different cloth. What
seems normal to most of us, like running and trusting and being isolated in our
own being is strange. WHERE HEAVENS MEET is the autobiography of such a life.
This was an extraordinary book of an extraordinary life. I wouldnt say it was
the best writing technically Ive ever read: it was often more like a
conversation than a book. However, there is, in some way, a genuineness that
comes across. You knowthat much of what this gentle person is telling you is
true. Why would you put in that you had polio as achild if you didntit would
be so easily disproved. Much of it, such as meeting with Christ and Abraham and
aliens and for that matter, Sterling Holloway (the voice of Winnie the Pooh) and
Ricou Browning (the Creature from the Black Lagoon), seems impossibleand yet
the same voice that tells you one is telling you the other.
K.T. often appears on radio shows. Her ife is made up of so many different
facets that only one face is usually hown. She may be appearing as asurvivor of
Hurricane Andrew, a psychic, a nature photographer, or an observer o aliens
(including what she takes to be the pet of one). This book is like a trip into
the looking glass, only when you look around, you cant tell which side of the
glass you occupy. It is told in a very unusualwaynot scientific, not New Age,
but simply a case of this is what happened tome.
I cant tell you that you will enjoy the book: parts of it are unsettling. I
cant tell you that you will believe the book: some parts of it will be outside
anyone's ken. I can tell you that you are likely to find it fascinating.

Books in BAR now include some titles available from the UK. This is for

Releasedates will generally reflect the U.S., except for exclusively UK titles.
As we begin our third year of BAR, this issue is the first non-holiday one to
combine two months. I wouldnt have gotten this one out in February if we
hadnt had the once in every 400 year occurrence of a leap year in a year ending
in 00 (the rule is, it is a leap year if it is divisible by four unless it ends
in 00 or it is divisible by400hows that for being a geek?). Workon my first
book, being co-written with Gini Scott for Paragon House, is takingup much of my
free time. I would expect these to go to bimonthly for the next several
months, although I willtry and provide at least two featured titles each time.
If anyone wants to be included in the book, please let me know. I have already
begun doing interviews. Everyone who is interviewed should get a chance to
review their interview prior to inclusion, Also, we will not include comments
criticizing explicitly named otherliving people. The book is about howbeing
involved with UFOs (as a researcher and/or experiencer) has affected people.
While it will provide some resources and some overview, the main goalwill be to
let the readers meet the people involved. Interested parties should e-mail me
at UFOBOOK@....
If you have books to recommend, please let me know. If you would like to be
named as recommending it, include that information as well and tell me youwould
like to be cited.
One other note: long-time readers know that I used to cover magazines
andmagazine articles. I think it is worthnoting the LIFE March 2000 cover
article on UFOs. While not on-line as far as I have seen, you may want to pick
itup. I found the excerpt from a pollthat they did of particular interest. As
has been the case lately, more people in the poll believed that thegovernment is
covering up information on UFOs than believe that UFOs exist

FEATURED TITLES:
Facesof the Visitors (paperback)
Facesof the Visitors (paperback) (UK)
Subtitle: An Illustrated Reference to Alien Contact
by Kevin Randle and Russ Estes
320 pages: glossary; index; extensive references; profusely
illustrated;photographs
All sorts of people come here at timesgentlemen as well as actors. I didnt
know which you was, sir, for themoment.
Horace Wyndham writing in THE FLARE OF THE FOOTLIGHTS
Kevin Randle first came to wide-spread public attention as one of the authorsof
UFOCRASH AT ROSWELL (paperback) in 1991, the book that, while not the first, was
the one that broke the story with the general reading public. Randle has
since continued to write avariety of books, and to be embroiled in controversy.
His willingness to make his own opinions known, regardless of theunpopularity of
them, is one of the things that has distinguished his work.
This book, while certainly an extensive and valuable illustrated reference tothe
different descriptions of alleged aliens, is also notable for the clearlyand
admittedly subjective credibility rating for sightings. Those already
familiar with the cases willbe most intrigued. Zeros, meaning leastreliable,
are the most common number given. Some of these go to well-known cases,
including Roswell mortician,Glenn Dennis. On the other hand, nines, eights,
and sevens are tied for the least often given, and one of the ninesgoes to
another group of Roswell witnesses. In case you are guessing that it is Randles
position versus that ofothers, both cases cite his own books.
Speaking of the citations, they are extensive. It is often in ufological books
that documentation is lacking. That is certainly not the case here, and
thepublishers are to be lauded for including an index as well as a
bibliographyand a glossary. The book is alsowell-served by the database
sections in the back, which look at two famouswaves of sightings, those of
1954 and 1973.
As to the cases, each one is typically given a couple of pages. This includes
an evocative illustration byRuss Estes, some basic facts, and a narrative. They
are presented in three sections (Visitors, Contactees, and Abductees),with a
fourth one for photographs of aliens. Each section is also given an overview
article. The photographic cases are interesting, although the article indicates
that we found nothing to suggest that any ofthe following pictures are
authentic.Despite this statement, one picture (the Police Chief Greenhaw case)
isgiven a reliability rating of 5, which is higher than the average for
thenon-photographic cases.
Despite one astonishing gaffe (a Close Encounter of the Second Kind is defined
inthe Visitors overview as meaning that the craft had landed near the
witnesswhen it is correctly defined in the glossary as referring to a case
withphysical traces), this book is a great browsing book for those new to
thetopic, and a handy reference and conversation piece for those
moreknowledgeable of it.
TheChinese Roswell (paperback)
TheChinese Roswell (paperback) (UK)
UFO Encounters in the Far East from Ancient Times to the Present
by Hartwig Hausdorf
August 1998
275 pages: source notes, index, map
"As I make my slow pilgrimage through the world, a certain sense ofbeautiful
mystery seems to gather and grow."
-A. C. Benson
At times I think that there is a chauvinistic sense withsome Americans that UFOs
are our mystery. That we think it is appropriate that this space age conundrum
exploded outof the state named after our first President. This perception has
been seen by others: from the Soviets blaming usfor them to C. G. Jung saying,
What is worse, most of these stories come fromAmerica, the land of superlatives
and science fiction. (FLYING SAUCERS, AMODERN MYTH OF THINGS SEEN IN THE SKY).
Of course, anyone even casually aware of the literature knows that this
isnttrue. UFO sightings, both ancient andof a variety very much like those in
the US, have been recorded from many partsof the world. In recent months, a
spateof sightings in China has made the international news.
What Hartwig Hausdorf does in this book is give us more than just
transplantedobservances. He strives to give us aChinese sense of it. The
Roswell ofthe title, a UFO crash, didnt occur a mere fifty years ago, but
12,000 yearsago. The survivors were not taken forautopsy or brought into
treaties, but effectively colonized the area. This book is not about Daylight
Discs andradar/visual cases, but about Material Immortality and White Pyramids.
Thats not to say that it is all philosophy: there are even some modern
casesthrown in. But the paradigm of theChinese, especially the ancient Chinese,
is not that of modern Americans. This is a common error in looking at
othercultures reports of the paranormal, and one that Hartwig manages to
mostlyavoid. For instance, the issue ofwhether or not a particular tribe
thought Bigfoot was a real animal ignoresthe fact that they had a very
different sense of what real meant.
I definitely found the book interesting, but one shouldnt expect it to beneatly
broken down into cases that will help fill in the ufological databaseson the
Internet. In gives, instead, amuch-needed different look at what might not be
what we think it isor evenwhat we think it isnt.

Subtitle: An Account of Unknown Creatures Sighted by
Many Respectable Persons
Between 1638 and the Present Day
by J.P. ONeill
August 1999
256 pages
Sightings table (with page references), bibliography
and website directory,
illustrated, some photos, NO index

Right from the beginning, people who sighted sea
serpents were ridiculed.While seeing Elvis
has taken the number one
spot on the debunkers guilt by association hit
parade, sea serpents are still
towards the top.If you want to tarnish
a subject as the product of gullible overcredulity ,
you can toss in, Oh, and
Im sure it was riding on a sea serpent to bursts of
derisive snickering.

Why should this be so?As J.P. ONeill
ably documents in this volume, there are plenty of
sober sightings by reliable
individuals.What many of them report
does not seem unreasonable.ONeill has
made a point of reproducing the original stories in
most cases, often with
little commentary.

She focuses on the reports that have come from the
Gulf of Maine, which runs essentially from
Massachusetts up to Nova Scotia. These include the ones
in the area of Cape Ann and Gloucester, which made
national news, particularly in 1817.

The book is straight-forward, respectful, and not
sensational. It is, in a sense, very New England. It
says that this is what it is and brooks
no nonsense about it.

ONeills research (and that of others, whom she
graciously and properly acknowledges) goes far beyond
the observations of hardworking fisherfolk and
land-dwellers. She does an excellent job in setting
the scene, and showing us the people and the politics
that were involved. As with many of the best
books on these topics, it is ultimately not about his
Snakeship, but about our reactions to him.

The quibble factor here is so low its not even worth
bringing up. Even the lack of an index is ameliorated
by the sightings table. The book is an excellent read,
even for people not generally interested in these
things. For people who want to see wild speculations
or extensive analysis, it may not be enough. However,
the vast majority will enjoy this well-written
accounting of what has been called the Great
Mystery.
by Janet and Colin Bord
1989
432 pages, generously illustrated (primarily with photographs), case
listings, notes, bibliography, index
There are some books that never seem to get properly filed back on the shelf.
While admittedly, my shelves are overflowing, I do make an effort to keep
them in some order. Books that get consulted often, however, dont always
get back to where they belong.
This is such a book. There are many books that serve as encyclopedias of the
unexplained. This one has the special benefit of being written by two of the
most knowledgeable, original, and nice people in the field. Its not a
series of short entries, but seventeen chapters averaging more than fifteen
pages apiece. They cover the spectrum, from out of place animals to UFOs to
spontaneous human combustion. Each chapter provides a sampling of stories,
told in the amusing but accurate Bordian style.
This would be enough to make the book worthwhile. However, the Bords go
beyond, and provide a ninety-page "Gazetteer of Strange Events",
arranged geographically from around the world. While these can be
tantalizingly brief, they are fascinating. They fit in very nicely with what
I was doing with the National Events by Area Registry of the Unexplained
(NEARU) some years back. They show that weird stuff happens everywhere, even
near where you live.
If that wasnt enough, the photographs are extraordinary. The Bords are
justifiably well-known for their Fortean Picture Library, and its well
utilized here. Theres something about a photograph of a smiling Drew Carey
type in a plaid shirt and glasses holding a dead coatimundi (killed in
Nebraska in 1968). It just puts a whole different perspective on the
story...and the world.
A highly-recommended book, both as a reference and a good read.

by Christopher OBrien
February 1999
Paperback, 339 pages, foreword (by David Perkins), map, photographs, notes,

"I think of them like sleepy tigers, Glenn, that occasionally -- perhaps when
a man gets a hint of them --open their eyes to the full and stalk in his
direction. When a man becomes ripe for them, when hes produced the
possibility of them, and then when hes closed his ears to the protective
mechanically-augmented chatter of humanity, they make themselves known to
him."
FRANZ KINZMAN in A BIT OF THE DARK WORLD written by Fritz Leiber
Are there places in the world where the extraordinary is more ordinary than
normal? Where the solidity of consensus reality seems to slip and slide,
making us grip the steering wheel more tightly or risk letting go altogether?
Reading ENTER THE VALLEY by Christopher OBrien, a continuation of his work
in The
Mysterious Valley (paperback), would lead many people to think that
there are. After all, OBrien reports that in this one valley in Colorado and
New Mexico, there are: UFO sightings of an astonishing variety and
regularity; cattle, horse, and other animal mutilations; haunted houses;
witches; cannibalism; possible underground bases; appearances of the Devil
himself; and more, including "uncategorizables", like floating, glowing
things called "prairie dragons".
There is no question that all of this is weird. The question is, to what
extent is the valley responsible, and to what extent are the people (most
importantly, OBrien himself) responsible? Thats not to say that these
things are untrue. When I used to do NEARU (the National Events by Area
Registry of the Unexplained, currently dormant), my point was that these
things happen everywhere, all the time. My feeling is that the presence of a
sympathetic journalist is the most significant factor in an area becoming
known. In many regions, dedicated, on-the-spot investigators bring reports
out that would otherwise not stray beyond late night conversations with
family and friends.
What OBrien does in remarkable, and highly creditable. He gets his neighbors
to open up. Trust is rare in todays world, and writers like Arlene Gaal
(Ogopogo), Constance Whyte (the Loch Ness Monster) and OBrien show us what
trust can achieve. To earn that trust, of course, they must be gentle with
their confidantes. Dont expect any hard-hitting questions or in-depth
analysis. Look at OBrien, and not the valley, as a gateway into the
paranormal lives of people.
Like other "resident investigators", OBrien has also done considerable
research into the history of the area. This book ranges far beyond The
Mysterious Valley (paperback). This is both a strength and a weakness.
While frontier tales of bizarre human behavior, and hunts for lost treasure
are interesting, they seem a bit of a stretch. Part of OBriens point seems
to be that we cant know what is relevant, but the diffusion of attention
makes the topic more difficult to grasp.
We also get more about OBrien himself. He has had his share of strange
experiences, and that always is a bit of a risk for a writer to admit. The
stories here are interesting, but again set us wondering about the
connections.
Even though the writing can be a tad rough at times, with some tendency to
mix past and present tenses, that adds to its flavor. This is not an outsider
writing about the odd quirks of a strange valley. It is a rare chance to
experience the interactions of people with the unaccepted.
