Carol Ann,
Yes they should be certified if for no other reason then credibility with the
students. If I were teaching I'd want the cert just to be able to say I'd
done it. Plus it's what? $215? I don't think they are required to have it,
not like anyone is regulating such things but I think they should have it.

Hi!
Does anyone here have any books they'd like to reccommend to study at home for
A+ certification? Unfortunately the books I have are all geared towards the
old test, will these suffice or is it important to get new material? Any other
advice anyone has to offer would be very much appreciated. :)
Thanks!

Contact www.amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. These two have the largest
resources for Mac architecture and repair. Who knows, they may have a
special on exactly what you are looking for.

Not pass them?

Hi Carol Ann,
I'm currently enrolled at a technical school in a course called "Computer
Operations Technology". We will be prepared after 18 months of 4 hours a
day 5 days a week for our A+ certification tests. The instructor is not
certified but has years of practical experience. His aid is certified and
doesn't have even a small percentage of the instructors knowledge. So I
guess the long and the short of it is, it all depends. I would be happy to
share my class work and learning and I'm sure we could both benefit.

Thank you for your input,

Dear Carol: I don't believe CompTIA sanctions educational institutions (?), but
I would have to wonder about the institution that hires a Non-Certified
instructor to teach any Certification class.

No, an instructor does not need to be certified. In fact, you don't need an
instructor at all (unless you feel you need one). All you have to do is pass two
tests and you are certified. There are plenty of fine books and instructional
kits available. Check out your local computer super store to find all that you
need. But if you feel you need an instructor a course may get you across the
hump. Presently I am attending Infotec and they offer pretests for the course. I
also have Forefront's A+ course and a big thick book on the subject. I intend to
use them all. But that's my preference. Later

I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself to the others users
of this list. I am a first semester CTS student in a nine month program
that culminates with A+ and Novell Certifications. I am far from a
computer genius but am starting to learn more each day. I am wondering
what I can expect as far as a job market, examination and their
difficulty levels, what to ignore, what to absorb more than others.....
Thanks for reading this and i hope this list provides me with info that
helps me get through this program successfully.
thanks for your time, m

I took the test on Tuesday and passed and there was
nothing on the OSI model. It takes too much effort to
learn it anyway and no one uses it as far as I know.
I made extensive notes on the exam.

I know that it was not present on the old A+ exam (I passed both sections

believe he ran across any questions regarding the OSI model. It might
appear on the DOS/ Windows elective though. I had to study it for the

in case it does pop up :

found new information about the new test.
Here is an outline of what the new test covers. More detailed

I will start sending questions on Monday. Some people mentioned they
would like to see questions everyday. I would like to do this but I
don't have the time. I currently work 50 to 60 hours a week and have a
family (wife and two daughters). I also would like to research the
answers back to multiple references to be accurate.
If anyone who doesn't have access to a browser would like more detailed

I am thinking of adding sample test questions to the list. I would try
to make them like actual test question for the new test. Only covering
the DOS and Hardware topics, as I'm not familiar with MAC. If anyone

I am using the wave technologies study material and prior to that had no
experience whatsoever that might lend to the assumption that i knew what i was
doing on a computer. I have been studying for 6 months and have taken each of
the A+ tests twice, only passing the DOS/Windows module thus far...I found
that the wave books were incomplete and that about 7 questions in the hardware
section were not covered in the material. that is what i found. i am not
bagging on the material because if i knew it ALL, those 7 questions wouldn't
have made that big of a difference. = ) a little tip about the practice
exams...they are nice to you...the real test uses difficult wording.

Three questions.
!) I am interested in buying one of the A+ software packages to start
studying to take the test. I am currently looking at Forefront and Wave
Technologies. Which is better? Any other suggestions?
2) How long does it take to go through these courses?
3) I am pretty familiar with PCs but by no means know enough to take the A+
test. Are these courses for beginners?
Thats all for now. Will probably have more later.

well, today i took both the DOS/Windows and the Hardware portions of the
test...as most of you probably know, you need 69% on the DOS/Windows part and
72% on the Hardware...well, i got 69% on the DOS/Windows part and 70% on the
Hardware. i missed it by 2 measly points, but i'm retaking it on saturday
morning...i am using the study materials distributed by Wave Inc.; that's what
they use at New Horizons Computer Learning Center in Wichita, KS...I am also
studying Novell, so if anyone has any recommendations on that, feel free to
enlighten me. = ) i have already flunked the CNA test once, so i am familiar
with that too. (today was the 2nd time i had taken the two for A+. = )
anyway, i had better go now...take care. = )
curtis.
Hi Curtis,
I just finished a college course covering the A + certification. The
book we used was "A+ Certification Concepts & Practice" by Charles
Brooks. I haven't heard back from anyone in the class who has taken the
test yet.
Remember, if you pass one of the tests you need to take the other one by
July 30 as the test is changing on July 31. Otherwise you must retake it
and pass both of the new test.
I'm waiting to take the new test as I'm studing for Novell exams right
now.
Please let us know how you do and what you material you used to study
for the test.
Good Luck,
:-) Dale
