Just read Johns posting and thought of all
the things that are hurting us worldwide and at the home front. Here is
one that is making the rich richer and the rest of us going down the tube.
My neighbor is installing a new Outback
Power solar power system this week as he said he has had it with power cost.
I toured the plant and they build a great product. All sizes and 120/230
VAC, and he is doing his in phases with the 10KW, Solar 110VAC first.
I will let everyone know about it.
They make a combo unit too with wind and solar.

What a ship....no
wonder 'Made in China'
is displacing North American goods big time with this floating
continent transporting goods across
the Pacific in 4 days, no less!
This is how
Wal-Mart gets its goods from China.
Get a load of this ship! 15,000 containers
and a 207' beam!
And look at the crew-size: 13 people for a ship longer
than a U S aircraft carrier which has a crew of 5,000 men and officers.
Think it's big enough?
Notice that the 207' beam means it cannot fit through
the Panama or SuezCanals.
It is strictly transpacific. Check out the cruise speed:
31 knots means the goods arrive
4 days before the typical container ship
(18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run.
So this behemoth is hugely competitive when carrying
perishable goods. This ship was
built in five sections. The sections floated together and then welded.
The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11 cargo
crane rigs that can operate simultaneously.
Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces
water resistance and saves
317,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year.
???
Editorial Comment!A recent documentary in late March on the History Channel, noted that almost all
of these containers are shipped back to China,EMPTY, yep, you heard it right. We send nothing back on most
of these ships. What does that tell you about the current export
industry of this country?

FYI .....
An Iowa State / U. of Hawaii connection ....
Prize-winning research links fungi with fuel
A research project conducted at Iowa State and the University of
Hawai'i at Manoa recently won the 2008 Grand Prize for University
Research from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Team
leader Hans van Leeuwen, an ISU professor of civil, construction,
and environmental engineering, says the process they're developing
could reduce energy costs by as much as one-third. The project
focuses on utilizing fungi to clean up and improve the dry-grind
ethanol production process. Currently, only about half of the thin
stillage (liquid byproduct) created in the process can be recycled.
But when the research team experimented with adding Rhizopus
microsporus, a fungus, into the mix, the thin stillage was able to
be recycled back into the production process. Van Leeuwen says
eliminating the need to evaporate excess thin stillage would save
ethanol plants up to $800 million a year in energy costs and reduce
the ethanol industry's water consumption by as much as 10 billion
gallons annually. The researchers have filed for a patent on the
technology and are currently looking for investors to commercialize
the invention.
Originally it was going to be coal fired believe it or not. that was stopped d/t community opposition but it was more or less "approved" in the early days of ethanol enthusiasm as a reflection of state law.

If you follow any river on Kaua`i upstream you will find a dam and ditch system already built. I know that there is new hydro technology to take advantage of the system without a three gorges set up. It may not be a billion kilowatt dam but I've had "high hopes" for at least some power from this source for 30 years and apparently the technology is coming on line now to lay down generation devices that don't require steam diversion or blockage.
Just some info for thought....

Aloha,
There are a number of good installers of wind and PV on Island. Apollo
Kaua'i has not taken to recommending specific ones to date, as we have
not gathered enough information to fairly evaluate one installer versus
another. However, we can and should take on the project of simply
listing all the installers people can consider with brief descriptions.
A big component of doing a home scale RE system is the type of
interface with the grid. Net-metering, where electricity is bought back
by KIUC at retail (up to a zero balance) is once again on the chopping
block. Apparently we have reached the one percent penetration cap that
was established as the limit to net-metering, so it is unknown at this
time as to whether the cap will be extended again. This is a somewhat
complicated issue, but there is a reasonable concern that net metering
represents a subsidy to people who own a renewable energy system by
people who do not own one. At this time, you can still, of course,
build an RE system on your home, and KIUC will pay you back at
their 'schedule Q' rate, but it's important to know this when you run
the cost analysis for the system.
Thanks, hope this helps. Keep an eye open for an installer list in a
couple weeks or so.

I have asked around and no one seems to know of any contrators that are

That's downright delusional. Ask Al Gore why he "lost"- he'll tell you it had nothing to do with Nader- Gore willl tell you he couldn't even carry his home state, Tennessee. He'll tell you he ran away from his own precepts. He'll tell you about the illegal disenfranchisement of black and low income voters, especially in Florida. He''ll tell you how he stupidly refused to actually claim the victory he had in Florida according to the actual count of votes. He'll tell you how he personally refused to recognize the motion as Senate head when a senator challenged the certification of the election. And...
I could go on all day- how long should I go on to show the abject ridiculousness of that line of reasoning. So if Hitler and Mussolini are on the ballot w should all vote for Mussolini because at least he's not Hitler?
That "kind of thinking" is why we get crappy people in
office- because we accept the limited choices we're told we have to accept. If we all voted for who we really wanted based on the issues we'd have Dennis Kucinich the as Democratic nominee.
And gee whiz those Democrats have really been great- look how the war ended after the 2006 election... why Bush has been impeached and the war authorization has been withdrawn, the troops are home and the Patriot act has been rescinded and....
People who think it was Nader who yielded Bush just won't take personal responsibility for their vote and sell it out to a traitorous do-nothing Democratic Party- the ones who are really responsible for Bush.
Go ahead with the herd... but don't wonder why you get the candidates and incumbants "sheeple" deserve.

You are so right. I have had Solar
HW in Seattle for 20 years, I had a 150 gal storage tank with a 12 gallon, side
arm heater with 8 gallons of De-ionized (Distilled,) Water in it and I cleaned
and flushed it once in those 20 years just because one of my flow glasses needed
changing due to sticking. It used tiny TACO pumps with no seals and magnetic
drive. I made so much HW I even used it for House Heating too. My
Natural Gas bill went from over $80 a month to $6.00 a month and that was for
rental of the gas HW tank. I stored HW at around 200 degrees and mixed it
to 130 to feed the present HW tank as back up. We never ran out of HW
with family of 5, washer and dryer, dishwasher and lots of baths and showers.
When people tell me they run out of HW here
in Hawaii, I
question what in the world are they doing? It is not even realistic for Hawaii or the same for Larger
instillations and business. I only had three roof panels and it made HW
if needed on cloudy days and in the winter. I had to deal with freezing
and that is not an issue here, and on a normal day, the water came off the roof
at about 210 degrees.
Not only did I do the domestic HW, I
heated my 64’ X 20’ pool with 850 Sq. feet of Solar-Roll on my
garage for a 35,000 gallon, pool, and that water came of the roof at over 120
degrees.
When people tell me they do not like cold
showers, something is VERY wrong. The installs are so simple most people
can open a kit and install them selves. Contractors could do them in a few
hours and there should be specials, rebates, and incentives to get customers
both large and small, private and public to go Solar.
There should never be a tax or a extra
charge to install or use Solar. Large business such as Hotels should get
a cut in rates in Gas and Electricity to install. As we grow we can not
continue to use our Gas & Fuel to waste of generating Electricity.
Just think of the Gas that the Hotels must burn to make our Hawaii so pleasant for things like cooking
and Tiki torches. They do not need to waste it on HW or Spa
heating. Even if they could not heat all the water and need to fall back
on Gas, it still cost WAY less to raise HW a few degrees instead all the way
from cold water.
Many businesses can even make enough heat
to make Fresh Water from Sea Water. There are Co-Gen systems all over the
world doing things like this and the savings are great. Some plants
generate power, make heat, make FW and heat HW all from the same heat and many
time that is just waste heat from the generators cooling system. When we
built our new Jumbo Mark II ferries, in Seattle
we did that just fine and had a back up Hot Water oil burner heater set to automatic
for heating at night or in the shipyard when the main plant was not
running. We even had our import generator using it’s cooling to
heat the ship and with this we almost never saw the oil fired heaters running.
With the cost of fuel rising almost daily,
we MUST do this NOW!

The necessity for having three different inspectors for a hot water

could be a exemption or a series of exemptions like the safe room,
or resident occoipied presently offered.
I beleive that 95% of our hot water needs can be met with a
properly sized solar hot water system. Hot water does not need to
be heated with a potent fuel.I think we need to find ways for
everybody to join in and let the sun do all the work it can.
Got any bulb changer jokes to go along with that?

Imagine a truck that has lost its brakes coming down Haleakala or Mauna Kea. How would you guard against that?
You could focus on slowing or stopping the truck by building better emergency brakes.
You could focus on alternative paths - like run-a-way ramps.
Or you could focus on helmets for people, encourage the driving of SUVs, and hardening buildings, so that the resulting impact will minimize the loss of life.
Climate change is like the truck barreling down the hill.
You can focus on slowing or stopping it through conservation and energy efficiency.
You can focus on alternative paths - like low impact, climate friendly, renewable energy.
Or you could focus on building new ecosystems so that existing species can be relocated after their original habitat is destroyed.
This later approach is called adaptation, mitigation, or collaboration. The idea is to accept that climate change can't be stopped, to accept money from climate abusers, and to use the money to adapt life and ecosystems to the coming climate disaster.
The Nature Conservancy -- ''Preparing for Climate Change: The Conservancy is calling for governments around the world to implement strong climate change adaptation policies that: ... Seek adaptation strategies ... Adjust conservation and natural resource management approaches to enable plants, animals and natural communities to adapt to inevitable impacts ... Provide dedicated and incremental funding to implement nature-based adaptation strategies ... Policy frameworks that achieve these objectives can ensure that natural areas around the world adapt to the impacts of climate change and continue to protect and support people's livelihoods.''www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/strategies/art22952.html
The Nature Conservancy is openly advocating this position at the Hawaii Legislature and at the Hawaii Greenhouse Gas Emissions Task Force created by the Legislature. Some legislators are buying it.
This is a natural extension for The Nature Conservancy which preserves land by providing tax breaks for polluters.
Thanks for the post, I like your LED
bulb. When I was Staff Chief Engineer of the Jumbo Mark II vessel and on the
design and construction project we used to carry a handful of lamps when making
rounds at night and always had to replace some indicator lamps.
I worked directly with LEDTronics in CA
and I converted the vessel to LED indicator lamps. The total was over 1800
lamps of many types. It was a huge success and for three years before I
retired we did not replace any. It was easy to see the benefits. Not only did
we find that indicators were a true color but we even helped design the clear
lamps that are growing in use all over.
Keep up the good work and remember I live
here too.

Call to Action re: KIUC Elections
Aloha and
Good Morning AK.
On the front page of TGI:
KIUC BOD has jus nominated 3 people for the upcoming BOD election.
As was proposed earlier, I am urging AK to endorse 3 Platform Planks.
These are three core value positions that without, AK can not recommend
coop members consider in the election. What do you think they can be?
I am proposing that we quickly pool our efforts, each submit your best
effort (at something we can likely agree to). Then, i will bundle that
into a press release with the aforementioned and previously discussed
'AK Bright Ideas' proposal and release it TGI. NO Lumps of Coal. ;)
When we determine when our AK/TGI-Sponsored debate shall be, we can ask
questions on a variety of topics as is now our custom, AND test for the
presence of these 3 core value Platform Planks.
I invite you now to think of one platform plank that ANYONE who wants
your vote MUST have in order for you to even consider them.
Please for the next 3 minutes, in simple language, craft your core
plank. Since the goal is to agree, lets see how quickly we can converge
in agreement. Might AK become more nimble in 2008? Here is our first test.
Please reply back to the list your platform plank.

neighborhoods
I just signed up to post here. I hope this group's
language is not too
verbose. I'm Armored.
Seems like the neighborhoods on kauai are designed to be dependent on
public utilities. That is, no provisions for alternative energy
sources for each home.
I also believe in new technology will make things run more
efficiently. That is computers making sure all the energy is extracted
from each drop of fuel. But often is not the case. But then few
utilities are able to afford to upgrade their equipment often enough.
Comments?
Just something to thimk about before thursday's meeting.

There is an interesting and somewhat of the topic article on the
islandbreath.org
http://homepage.mac.com/juanwilson/islandbreath/
I think the map is helpful in showing how little native forests and
ag lands there are in relation to the large area of non-native
forests.
Diversifying & Improving Kaua`i's Non-native Forests by Planting of
Useful Species
by Nicolai Barca on 2 November 2007
INTRODUCTION
The current situation on Kaua`i, and most of Hawai`i for that matter,
is that the lowland areas where people frequent are covered in non-
native invasive weeds, many of which are noxious and form
impenetrable thickets. Their only major benefits to people are for
their watershed value and game production for hunters, both of which
they do relatively poorly. Fortunately, there are ways to improve the
situation while providing multiple benefits for everybody. Such
benefits include improved watershed function, improved conditions for
diverse recreational activities, edible fruit and nuts, as well as
future timber resources.
