Thanks for the thoughts, Patrick. I did a complete reset of the router, and
that seems to have helped. I am just under a year away from an upgrade, so
I am hoping to make it that long without having to do the DFU stuff.

Thanks,
Ken

Wow this is an odd one. I did a lot of repairs for a big company a while
back and 1 out of every 100 iPhone 4 would have an odd wifi glitch where the
wifi tab was greyed out. I never did figure that one out. From what you
described, you selecting the settings app and it stalls, I'm starting to
think something has gotten corrupted. I'm not a super iphone user when it
comes to backing up and software stuff, but if there is a way to back up
some stuff, numbers, texts, SMS stuff like that, I wonder if it would be
helpful to fully wipe, put it in DFU mode, and re-install the IOS back on
the phone, then instead of restoring your settings, start to set it up from
scratch. It's an option I wouldn't want to do but I'm out of ideas. I know
you did a reset and restore but perhaps the problem was restored from the
back up.

Short of having the device replaced this I think this is one of those rare
issues that might require a replacement device.

Group,

I apologize if this has been asked before. I just want to make sure.

My wife was given a iPhone 4 and wants to switch her Nokia flip phone to
it. How do we do this? I'm told the SIM card is bigger in the Nokia than
the iPhone.

Also, she doesn't want the internet on the iPhone so we don't need a data
plan. Is this possible?

Your advise is appreciated in advance.

Mark

you don't say what cell company but ATT and Verizon do not allow an iPhone
without a data plan. If you put your sim in the iPhone you will shortly receive
a text announcing that they have added a data plan to the phone.

What if you buy the phone from outside or pay full price? Someone I think

I ran across this alternative to iTunes and was intrigued. Is anyone using
this? How does it stack up against iTunes? I'm not having any issues with

Tried that a few (around 4) years ago. Its only pro was it was lighter (smaller
MB) than the iTunes. I don't know if that's still the case now.
It can also transfer music from iDevice to computer, but only in limited number
until you pay.

Plug the USB cable into a Windows system. Wait for the operating system to
recognize the iPhone hardware. Once it does, your iPhone is like a disk drive,
navigate to your pictures and move them anywhere.

Done.

Hi,

I've been using "Audiobook & Podcast Player version 1.1" to listen to audio
books on my iPad (3).

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Audiobook-Podcast-Player/110286518991483

It is an iPhone app, not well suited to the iPad. Has a few bugs.

So far, it is the best app I can find.

I'm hoping that one of the listees know of other readers that would be a better
choice.

I have always wondered why Apple wouldn't allow something simple like that! I
hate the hassle "going the Apple way".

I have an old Mac loaded with Linux. I'll have to see if it works there.

It is most frustrating and inexplicable that Windows users have always had
simple, direct access to the file systems of iPods, iPhones, etc., via
Windows Explorer while Mac users can not use Finder: we must use iTunes or
some third-party app.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple Schedules Special
Event For September 12; Shadow Hints At iPhone 5 via TechCrunch by
Peter Ha on 9/4/12

We knew it was coming and now it’s official. Apple has just sent out
press invites for its rumored September 12 event. By the looks of the
invite it’s pretty plain to see what product the company will be
launching – the next iPhone!

We’ll be liveblogging the event from the Yerba Buena Center. The event
is scheduled for a 10AM PT start time.

Here’s what we know so far about the next iPhone:

- Apple may package the new iPhone with these redesigned earbuds.

- The iOS 6 App Store may look like this.

- It’s probably just a taller version of its current self with a
4.08-inch screen.

- Both AT&T and Verizon are putting the kibosh on vacations, which
means it’ll probably be available on the 21st.

- Save those pennies because you’ll likely have to pay for adapters
thanks to a smaller dock connector.

- Will battery life be any better? *shrug*

And with a little tweaking with the contrast, the numeral 5 is clearly
visible.

Have iTunes running and put your music CD in the drive. iTunes should ask if
you want to add the album. Then just sync your phone

The only charge with CDs is when you buy them. ;)

You can sync any music files in the correct format, which can be AAC (the
default import format in iTunes), MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF, or WAV.

What do you mean by "MP3 area"?

I use Siri dictation constantly--reminders, texts, email, map and Google
searches. However, Siri sometimes goes blank, doesn't transcribe what I've said.
This seems unrelated to signal strength, battery charge, background noise level.

What happens is after I speak a phrase, three pink dots appear. Usually these
dots remain for a moment before the transcribed text appears. In error mode, the
dots wiggle and disappear. I've tried rebooting (pressing button on upper right
for about 10 sec, then back on after a minute or so). This seldom if ever works.

Then just as capriciously Siri will return in all her quirky glory. I could have
composed this message in 12 less minutes

Siri needs a connection to an Apple server in order to work. If for some reason
Siri can't contact that server then it cannot work. So if you don't have an
Internet connection or don't have a good Internet connection or for some reason
the server is busy you would get the behavior that you describe.

Apple refers to "restarting" your iPhone and "resetting" your iPhone.
What you describe is neither:
> To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the
Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the
slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
> Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the

I am not surprised. If you want to "reset" your device:
> To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at
the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

iTunes is the key. If that MP3 folder is known to iTunes, then you can sync
it. Have you added it to the iTunes library?

(Note that when you add files to the iTunes library, the default is to also
copy the *files* into the iTunes > iTunes Media folder, but you can change
this in Preferences so only the file "pointers" are added to iTunes.)

That's odd Frank. I have been having the exact opposite problem. After I will
delete a message it will come back four or five times as new when I open my mail
app. And sometimes the mail won't delete when I ask it to so I have to open a
specific mail provider (like Cox or Gmail instead of all mail) than go back to
all mail and it will be gone. My 4s never did this until the 5.1.1 update. Any
suggestions.
