Introduction to Nepal

Nepal is a small country located in South Asia between India to its south and China to its North. It is a small but beautiful country in terms natural beauty, land of lofty Himalayas including the world highest Mountain Peak–Mount Everest (8848M) is located in this country and deep valleys, fertile Terai(plain) land and green hills, stumbling rivers and lakes, tropical heat and piercing chill dense forest and vast grass land ,dazzling sunshine and dark caves, torrential rain and prickly sun, colorful merry festivals and calm severe meditation, Nepal is the land of Extremes. The country is the birth place of Lord Buddha where 80% people are Hindus, 10 percent are Buddhists and other 10 percent constitute Muslims and Christianity. The world famous living goddess also lives here in Nepal.

Agriculture is the main occupation. More than 80% of people are engaged in agriculture and the agriculture system is traditional. The pace of Industrial development is very lethargic due to lack of adequate capital, skill man power, technology. Therefore, more than 30 percent people are still living below the poverty line. The annual Per capita income is approximately 320$. Most of the people live in the hill and mountain region that are far behind the socio-economic and educational infrastructure development. In the rural areas people have to walk 3-5 hours to bring a pot full of water and children have to walk the same amount of time to reach and come back from school.

SETUP-NEPAL (the voice of the socially, economically and educationally destitute)

Social and Economic Transformation for Rural Upliftment–Nepal (SETUP-NEPAL) is a non- profit Non Governmental Organisation registered under the Nepal Government. The organisation is established to reduce or eliminate social, economic, cultural, caste and gender related discrimination for socio-economic, cultural and educational transformation of communities of Nepal.

Vision

The SETUP- NEPAL envisions to be an efficient, effective and leading social organisation in educating, inspiring, empowering, capacity building, supporting, enabling, guiding and leading the vulnerable, backward and marginalized communities and rural people to reduce or eliminate the barriers to social, economic, cultural, educational, rights and gender based gap existed in society in order to create equal, just, prosperous and healthy New-Nepal.

Mission

The mission of the SETUP-NEPAL is to help community reduce or eliminate the barriers to education, economic and social transformation and improve their lives through educating, advocating, empowering, capacity building, supporting, enabling, guiding and leading them to overall socio economic and academic progress perpetually.

Objective

1. To assist in reducing the economic barriers hindering people, poor families, women, children and community enable them to engage in economic activities to improve their lives by capacity building, providing skill training and conducting micro credit program.

 

2.  To reduce the social and cultural barriers enabling community to participate in utilizing local resources; and engage in community based socio-economic activities for prosperity.

 

3.  To conduct awareness and community   development program based on social justice and inclusion in order to promote, support, co-operation and peace among multicultural communities.

   

4. To assist orphan, physically handicapped, displaced, conflicted- affected, financially backward, marginalized family’s children and senior citizens in their education and health by providing them educational, rehabilitative and health support.

5.  To advocate to the basic rights of the women, children, senior citizens of the society to draw the attention of the concerned government authority.

 

6.  To help and play a partnership role with the government authority to eliminate the social, economic, cultural, ethnic educational discriminations in the society

 

7. To develop sustainable rural tourism, agro-tourism, and ecotourism activities in order to enable community to work, utilize local resources and conserve, preserve and promote natural, cultural diversity and historical resources to get benefit together.

 

8. To establish partnership relationship with government organisation and national and international organisation similar to the organizational objectives.

9. To conduct research on the issues and problems related to educational, social, economic, cultural, rights and gender based discrimination and carryout intervention program to mitigate those problems throughout Nepal.

10. To inspire private sector to invest in promotion of social welfare.

11. To work towards transferring appropriate technology suitable to the rural community in order to enable them to promote their socio-economic welfare.

 

Why SETUP –NEPAL Joined  TEACH SOC?

1.        To build a network of the people engaged in educational sector to create wider platform for cooperation in educating the children and women of rural Nepal.

2.      To get academic and technological support to help teachers and pupils to have an opportunity to learn more educational skills through it.

3.       To get support to build schools, children homes and libraries in the rural areas where lack educational infrastructure and where children have to walk 3-4 hours to reach to their school.

4.      To get support in empowering family members through training and skill enhancement so that children can have an opportunity to  fully devote in their study rather than being the helping hand of the parents in earning for living.

5.      To find the voices, hand and heart  of individuals, individual organizations, business organizations, international charities, donor organisation and (I) NGOs  working in child education, women empowerment, human rights, environment, agriculture and heath sector to help and assist SETUP-NEPAL’s  endeavors in order to materialize its objectives.

 

6.      To establish network among SETUP–NEPAL, Nepali teachers and  foreign teachers, individual organizations, business organisation, international charity, donor organisation and (I) NGOs to share the ideas and experiences in order to transform the socio-economic and educational status of  the backward communities. 

 

How can you help us?

In education Sector

·         By providing financial support in building the educational infrastructures, health centers, drinking water infrastructures in the rural areas of Nepal.

·         By providing technical support i.e. computers, printers, internet equipments for schools, libraries and community forest user groups and co-operatives run by women.

·         By working as the volunteers in education, health, environment and women empowerment sectors. 

·         As the fundraiser for ‘’SETUP-Nepal Access to Education  Program’’

·         By providing individual scholarship to orphan, talented and brilliant students who have left school and college education due to weak financial condition of Family.

·         By helping as the distance tutors to the Nepali teachers, and students.

·         By providing English Language training to community in those rural areas where SETUP NEPAL works for the development of home stay activities in order to transform society economically and educationally. 

·         Exchange of Students and teachers to share and learn more about modern teaching.

 

In Economic Sector

·         By providing financial support (As donor), technical support (as trainer)to conduct  Skill to earn training(SET) for  conflict- affected women, widowed and unemployed youths in order to train them to produce different items of handicrafts.

·         By providing financial support in the SETUP- Nepal Women Empowerment and Development Fund to start micro credit program to the trained women  and unemployed youths

·         By buying the handicraft products made by those trained women and youths

·         By staying in the rural households as the home stay guest while visiting Nepal.

·         Being the honorary, temporary and lifelong international member of SETUP-Nepal.

·         Assisting in organizing workshop, seminars, symposiums and conference on education, women empowerment, child and human rights issues.

Those who have voices, help us  to create another voice, those who are ready to give hands for us, advocate creating more hands, those who have big hearts please find another heart to help and assist in our endeavors to materialize our objectives dedicated to socio-economic transformation of the  poor, vulnerable and marginalized community .

The world is for all human beings. Let’s try to fill the every gap wherever it is existed by doing whatever we can at whatever condition we are living in. Let’s join hand in hand to create equity in every society.
