Interesting paper on "disk as tape". Jim's
architecture of using removable drives as a replacement for tape has
informed our architecture at the Archive. Further, his
"brick" idea is what we are implementing in our new data
facility where everything (routers, load balancers, storage,
processing, everything other than ether switches are built out of the
same unit: a cheap desktop pc).
I recommend his work and this paper.

No kidding (well perhaps kidding a bit).
The paper at
TeraScale SneakerNet: Using Inexpensive Disks for Backup, Archiving, and Data Exchange.

Is another installment in our quest for cheap bulk storage for interchange and archive.
Actually though, these boxes are fairly impressive database engines as well -- perhaps they are prototypes for future storage appliances.
We are building ten of them for various projects at BARC and with the SkyServer.
The paper is short (6 pages) and light.
I would really appreciate comments and criticism.
