Stewardship over what timeframe? "now" is a helpful conceit, but only
reflects a beginning, not a timescale for maturation or a timescale for
winding up / moving on to the next.

providing repository services and researching ways to capture/index/archive
new types of things.

David,

It sounds as though you are saying stewardship of "all human output
for all time" not limited to the examples you list below.  I feel the
discussion would be more fruitful with clearly restricted scope.

We have thousands of years of library-building and book writing.  Yet
without a great deal more experience in how to observe, capture, name
and organize, isolate and merge, correlate, contextualize, preserve
and share [human output], we will not be able to capture an omniscient
view of every part the world at every moment in time.

My question about timescale was asking for a scale... shall we join
with the Long Library discussions and think in terms of a 10,000 year
repository?  Is that too short-sighted?  Is one generation enough time
for now?

As for a normative role - does this happen today?
Should major repositories be the founders of billion-person recording
and archiving efforts, or is it best for large-scale knowledge capture
to be handled primarily by technology mavens, companies, and sites
founded on social networking?  Perhaps repositories of the future
should be physical social networking sites as well.  [how else to
breed the race of super-archivists needed for your omniscient
repository?]

If stewards give only limited advice and exercise caution and sensible
guidelines, who are the guides or communities developing those
guidelines?

Digital Information Management (DigIn) Certificate program admission is now open
for 2009-10.

The University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science is
pleased to announce that openings are available in the school's graduate
certificate program in Digital Information Management (DigIn) for students
entering the program in 2009.

The DigIn program features hands-on experience and focused instruction
supporting careers in libraries, archives, records management, museums, as well
as in the private sector. The certificate includes six courses covering a wide
range of topics relevant to today's digital information environment, including
digital collections, applied technology, technology planning and leadership,
policy and ethics, digital preservation and research data curation.

For information professionals just starting in the field or considering career
changes, the DigIn certificate program offers an alternative path to graduate
studies that helps prepare students for success in traditional graduate programs
or the workplace.

The certificate also provides a means for working professionals and those who
already have advanced graduate degrees in library and information sciences,
archives, museum studies or other fields to broaden their knowledge and skills
in today's rapidly evolving digital information landscape.

The program is delivered 100% online and has no residency requirements. Students
generally complete the certificate in four or six semesters (15 months or 27
months).

Beginning this year, DigIn applicants will be able to enter the program at the
start of the Summer, Fall, or Spring semesters. The application deadline for
Summer '09 is April 1. The deadline for Fall '09 admission is July 1, and for
Spring '10 the deadline will be Nov. 1.

DigIn was developed in cooperation with the Arizona State Library, Archives and
Public Records and the University of Arizona Outreach College. Major funding for
the program comes from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

I'm splitting off a separate thread about long-term archiving.  The
original thread is important enough not to derail it.

This is a big topic, and also one that has been addressed in many
different bodies of planning and literature.  The Long Now foundation
has considered a 10,000-year library project, and their Rosetta
Project tests a technique for 5,000-year preservation of texts.
Sadly, an earlier forum devoted to these ideas has been taken offline,
robots.txt'ed out of the internet archive, and I can't find a copy...

Related research into long-term archival engineering has turned up
good ideas: laser micro-etching into nickel provides an excellent
price/size/weight point per archived page, and requires only the
[re]creation of decent, bootstrappable optics to recover lost
knowledge.

You could create and distribute etched-plate copies of the 10B words
of all Wikimedia text [and thumbnails?] on perhaps 100 thin nickel
sheets, for roughly $100k / 50kg / 0.01 m^3 (incl padding).  If this
laser etching process were scaled up, it would drop significantly in
price.

 There has been an explosion in the volume of information world-wide
which will grow to 180 exabytes by 2011. But if action is not taken, that
information
can be lost within five to ten years.   Digital Preservation – The Planets
Way is an
opportunity to understand what may be done to manage digital content for the
long-term. The Planets project invites you to take part in the three-day
training
event which will be presented by members of the Planets project and established
experts in the field of digital preservation. The event will take place at the
striking
Royal Library in Copenhagen on 22-24 June – and
is also an opportunity to visit Denmark’s
capital during the Midsummer’s Eve celebrations! The event has been
subsidised to enable attendance. For the cost of 80
EUR to attend day one and 175 EUR to attend all three days, the event will help
you to make a start with, or advance, digital preservation activities in your
organisation.  Planets delivers a sustainable framework to enable archives,

and other large collection holders to approach digital preservation confidently
and effectively. The Planets framework and tools, which range from preservation
planning to preservation action and the use of a testbed environment, will be
presented in full for the first time. The event will give you an insight into

               La Asociación de Archiveros de Santa Fe, a los fines de hacerles
conocer una situación irregular por parte del archivo del Poder Legislativo de
nuestra Provincia, considerando que al momento no se ha expedido el Archivo
General de la Provincia, máxima autoridad a nivel provincial en materia de
archivo, y a sabiendas de que está en conocimiento de la circunstancia
anteriormente mencionada, expresa  su disconformidad ante el hecho de que
documentos pertenecientes al acervo Documental de la Provincia sean
tercerizados, es decir, puestos bajo la custodia de una empresa privada;
entorpeciendo con ello las exigencias de responsabilidades en las labores de
guarda, custodia y disponibilidad de los mismos, al carecer de una postura legal
que defienda el patrimonio documental que posteriormente ha de constituir el
Patrimonio Cultural Provincial.
Sucesos como los expuestos, imposibilitan garantizar el ejercicio de los
derechos ciudadanos de acceso a la documentación de los organismos públicos o, 
garantizar la privacidad de los datos en ellos contenidos, afectando
directamente al derecho de confidencialidad o respeto a la intimidad.
Así mismo, queremos poner en conocimiento de ustedes que el presente
pronunciamiento, es el resultado de denuncias, de las cuales nos hemos hecho
eco, a fin de no comprometer Instituciones a fines o relacionadas al quehacer
Archivístico Provincial; a la espera de una respuesta por parte de la Máxima
Autoridad Archivística de la Provincia.

The University of Arizona Digital Information Management (DigIn) Certificate
program is currently accepting applications for Fall '09. IMLS scholarships are
available.

The University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science is
pleased to announce that openings are available in the school's graduate
certificate program in Digital Information Management (DigIn), and that
scholarships are available for students entering the program in Fall 2009.

DigIn combines intensive, hands-on technology learning and a strong grounding in
the theoretical principles needed to manage large-scale digital collections in a
fast-changing environment. The program supports a wide range of professional
careers involving digital collections, including but not limited to libraries,
archives, and museums.

Graduate certificates are increasingly being recognized as a means for
information professionals with advanced degrees to enhance their knowledge and
technology skills. DigIn is also open to professionals who are new to the field
and who may be considering a masters-level education in the future.

The program is delivered 100% online and has no residency requirements. Students
generally complete the certificate in four or six semesters (15 months or 27
months).

DigIn now accepts applications before the start of the Summer, Fall, or Spring
semesters. The application deadline for Fall '09 is July 1. Late applications
will be accepted, although we cannot guarantee admission for the fall semester.

DigIn was developed in cooperation with the Arizona State Library, Archives and
Public Records and the University of Arizona Outreach College. Major funding for
the program comes from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
which has also provided scholarship funding.

joined forces with the Central European Initiative to offer 15 bursary places to

Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova,
Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine are eligible for this support. This will be the
first major specialist digital preservation event targeted at information and
preservation professionals from Eastern and Central Europe, and is designed for
CEOs, Heads of IT, and preservation / curation / IT staff from collection,
education, memory and heritage institutions across the Central and Eastern
European region. ‘Digital Preservation – the Planets Way’ will explore
the case for preservation of digital objects, the actions required, and the
Planets solutions to the issues.  The first day of the event will focus on the
challenges of digital preservation and introduce the Planets tools and services.
 On days two and three delegates will gain hands-on experience of working with
Planets and a scenario (sample collection) to develop a preservation plan and
preserve digital objects.  The event will include plenty of opportunity for
discussion and the sharing of ideas and best practice.  Lectures, workshops and

    Objetivo General

  Proponer una síntesis sobre el desarrollo de las líneas principales de las
políticas de archivos y patrimonio documental desarrolladas en cada Área
geográfica, a  fin de analizar la necesidad de actualización  que puedan ser
materializados con motivo del Bi-Centenario, como un soporte del Estado de
Derecho,  Soberanía,  Identidad,  Desarrollo Social y  Dignidad Humana.

   Modalidad

Se propone una exhibición cuyo eje central sea el archivo y las actividades que
se desarrollan, todo ello organizado con el fin de identificarlos como núcleos
de proyección cultural y social siendo muestra de la capacidad colectiva de un
pueblo.


La muestra persigue el objetivo de dar a conocer a los ciudadanos los servicios
que brindan los archivos provinciales, los recursos humanos con los que cuentan
y las tecnológicos en el tratamiento, acceso y difusión de la información de las
que se sirven, enfatizando el papel de garante de derechos y como depositario de
la memoria de un pueblo.

La pretensión de esta iniciativa es lograr  una  revalorización en la difusión
cultural de los archivos para dar respuesta adecuada a las nuevas necesidades y 
demandas sociales, mediante una exposición documental y fotográfica de aquellos
fondos y/o colecciones destacadas; a través de paneles que representen los
procesos indicando desde la elaboración de un reglamento hasta la adopción de
procedimientos técnicos, métodos y mecanismos; asesoramiento  y capacitación al
personal idóneo;  proyectos; sistemas; normas; infraestructura; gestión de
calidad; conservación y difusión.

El archivo participante deberá contactarse con los organizadores del presente
evento, a efectos de reservar su espacio como stand, enviando por mail una
síntesis, como modo de presentación  a fin de ser incorporado en el cuadernillo
que será entregado a los asistentes. Fecha máxima de entrega al 4 de septiembre.

La pretensión de esta iniciativa es lograr  una  revalorización en la
difusión cultural de los archivos para dar respuesta adecuada a las nuevas
necesidades y  demandas sociales, mediante una exposición documental y
fotográfica de aquellos fondos y/o colecciones destacadas; a través de paneles
que representen los procesos indicando desde la elaboración de un reglamento
hasta la adopción de procedimientos técnicos, métodos y mecanismos;
asesoramiento  y capacitación al personal idóneo;  proyectos; sistemas;
normas; infraestructura; gestión de calidad; conservación y difusión.

      El archivo participante deberá contactarse con los organizadores del
presente evento, a efectos de reservar su espacio como stand, enviando por mail
una síntesis, como modo de presentación  a fin de ser incorporado en el
cuadernillo que será entregado a los asistentes. Fecha máxima de entrega al 4
de septiembre.

Las entidades convocantes: Federación de Archiveros de la República Argentina
(FARA) y el Archivo General de la Nación, invitan a participar del


7º CONGRESO ARGENTINO DE ARCHIVÍSTICA
“POLÍTICAS Y ACTUALIZACIÓN ARCHIVÍSTICA”.
En el marco de la Sociedad de la Información, Conocimiento; hacia el
Bicentenario.

    Objetivo General
  Proponer una síntesis sobre el desarrollo de las líneas principales de las
políticas de archivos y patrimonio documental desarrolladas en cada Área
geográfica, a  fin de analizar la necesidad de actualización  que puedan ser
materializados con motivo del Bi-Centenario, como un soporte del Estado de
Derecho,  Soberanía,  Identidad,  Desarrollo Social y  Dignidad Humana.


Objetivo específico


El presente instrumento pretende fundamentar un sistema que nos permita abrir un
debate permanente sobre el sentido y la finalidad del Archivo.
La importancia de una actualización y la implementación de políticas acordes a
las necesidades de la vida archivística hace que optemos por una entidad
abierta, dinámica y participativa, englobada en el marco de la sociedad de la
información y del conocimiento; así también su relación con las instituciones
públicas como privadas, marcando líneas amplias y accesibles a los fines de su
adaptación a las nuevas tecnologías, que generan nuevas demandas.
Considerando que se modifica substancialmente el papel del archivero en la
sociedad, dada la diversificación de agentes productivos, el Censo debe
orientarnos hacia las necesidades institucionales, modos y requisitos para una
operatividad eficiente de la información, y salvaguardar principalmente, el
patrimonio social.
Modalidad
Es por tal motivo que se invita a participar a instituciones archivísticas, en
general, estableciéndose prioridades a los archivos generales o provinciales,
centrales o institucionales, generales o municipales y entidades que quieran
participar de esta iniciativa.
Dicho Censo permitirá mediante su confección y remisión, la discusión en la
articulación de una ley Nacional de Archivos a proyectarse en el VII Congreso
Argentino de Archivística cuyas entidades convocantes del VII CAA son La
Federación de Archiveros de la República Argentina (FARA) y el Archivo General
de la Nación, analizarán la presentación formal.
Sea en su modalidad escrita y oral, exponiendo en los paneles del congreso.

Derecho,  Soberanía,  Identidad,  Desarrollo Social y  Dignidad Humana.

The Electronic Media Group of the American Institute for Conservation is seeking
additional papers for the 2010 Annual Meeting in Milwaukee.  The deadline for
abstract submission has been extended to Thursday, September 10th.  Please check
here for full submission guidelines.

The theme of the 2010 meeting is "The Conservation Continuum: Examining the
Past/Envisioning the Future."  However, EMG welcomes innovative papers on all
topics related to electronic media in its varied forms of both practical and
philosophical in nature.  Past topics have included large scale digitization
projects, digital documentation, installation art, emulation vs. migration,
digital standards, education, surveys, metadata collection, and exhibition
issues.

contribuyan a mejorar la disponibilidad de la información, su organización,
administración y gestión dentro de las entidades públicas y privadas.

-  Expo de Archivos Provinciales:  La muestra persigue el objetivo de dar a
conocer a los ciudadanos los servicios que brindan los archivos provinciales,
los recursos humanos con los que cuentan y las tecnológicos en el tratamiento,
acceso y difusión de la información de las que se sirven, enfatizando el papel
de garante de derechos y como depositario de la memoria de un pueblo.

I have been uploading some old Wikipedia visitor statistics to the
Internet Archive. These are big files and there are lots of them.
I'm using FTP upload.  The "prompt" and "mput" commands in the
traditional UNIX "ftp" client provides a highly automated method.
It works fine.

But all I get is 319 kbyte/s bandwidth or 2.55 Mbit/s.  The
connection at my end (130.236.254.105) is 100 Mbit/s.  The files
for one month take more than 24 hours to upload.  I'm not in a
hurry, but faster would be nicer.
