Maybe Mouser electronics. I'm biased, of course, since I live a mile from
them.

http://www.mouser.com

I have used them for replacements for several different things.

As far as I know, whether to shuffle or not is decided in the moment you
start a playlist. Rockbox AJBs do have always a playlist internally they
work with. If shuffle is set on, a playlist is mixed up at first and than
set to a new fixed playlist (with the shuffled songs in line). You can
observe what it does under "Playlist Options/View current playlist".

Therefore, I think switching on/off shuffling during a playlist would have
no effect...

First you should charge it completely and than try again. If batteries are
too low, the hdd tries to start, shuts off, tries to start and so on - may
be this is your crackling noise.

Good luck

Thank you for your reply.

It took a little time, but I remembered that putting Rockbox on before
XP wrote the System Volume Information directory was very important.
Seems that putting the Rockbox files on before that happened allowed
the drive to see the .mod file properly. This was also the problem I
had with the 5.07 firmware upgrade.

The hard drive is working great. I have formatted it as a 20GB FAT32
partition for the music files and the rest rest of the drive is
formatted as an NTFS partition for use as a file storage drive.

Now, I just have to create the playlists again so I can listen to the
songs that I want at the time.

There has always been confusion as to what is really
meant by "firmware" on an Archos Jukebox. This can
really refer to two things: the "real" ROM based
firmware and the hard disk based "firmware" that the
Archos Jukebox will optionally boot up into if it
exists. Thus the ROM based system gets used for only
a boot-loader for the hard disk based system. It is
my understanding that the ROM based firmware can not
be upgraded in the earlier Jukeboxes such as the 6000.
If true all you are trying to update is the hard-disk
based "firmware". Since you are trying to go to
Rockbox anyway, you are wasting your time because you
will be using Rockbox instead. So just install
Rockbox and be done with it.

BUT: Since you also just upgraded the hard drive, make
sure the JB can actually see any files on the hard
drive first. You might have the problem where the
drive is only seen in USB mode which would be why your
attempted 5.07 upgrade isn't working as well. The
non-readable hard drive problem is discussed
sporadically throughout this forum. Does anyone have
a link to a one-stop info page on this problem?

I need some help upgrading the firmware of my JB6k from 4.53 to 5.07.

I just installed a new 100gb drive and that is working fine. I am
going to install the newest version of rockbox as soon as I get the
firmware up to 5.07.

I have tried to do this per the instructions on the Archos websiteand
in the download in the files section. Both are the same but do not
seem to work. The firmware stays at 4.53.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect that the hard drive has been formated under XT as the new
format and you will need to fomat it as FAT drive instead of NTFS. If
that is the case yu will probably have to find a Win 98 or win 95
computer and format it using that.

This is where you will have to take Chris Holts' very good advice:
>Try your question at www.misticriver.net

>Very good forums with knowledgeable people.

>There is also an iRiver section on the Anything But iPod forums
>www.anythingbutipod.com But the site is a little more consumer and a

Now you can be more specific in you questions to them.
The iRiver web site should have a support page for their products as
the flashing steps varies from product to product. (that is if they
even have the OS available for this purpose) And yes, re-flashing is a
term for almost any chip resident OS.

We like our AJB's because they seem to have the unique ability to
update the OS on the hard drive. (seems to overide the chip OS)

I STILL would not rule out the possibility that there
is something wrong with the file system format on the
iRiver's drive. If the iRiver appears to "boot up" to
the point the most of the functions work, just no
readable hard drive, I would bet against a problem
with it's firmware (though it's still a possibility).

A "wrong" format problem seems to happen occasionally
on the Archos products that us on this formum are
familiar with. I don't know all the facts, but here
is what I think tends to happen. All this information
is 3rd-hand because I have not experienced any of it
myself.

1) The problem seems to begin with WindowsXP. People
using old Win98/ME computers have never had this
problem. I also never heard of someone having the
problem with Win2000 but because of it's similarity to
XP, I would think it could happen. At least 2 people
also experienced this problem when they used some 3rd
party software to partition and format the drive,
specifically "Partition Magic"

2) Then the problem happens when they attempt to
format the drive using the above offending OS. In
some cases they begin by accidentally formatting it
with NTFS, which immediately causes the problem, but
then they reformat it with the proper FAT file system
and the problem doesn't go away. Other people either
don't admit that they did this or perhaps start off
formating as FAT in the first place.

3) Anyway, at this point over half of the people lose
their patience and discarded their players. The rest
were able to solve the problem by plugging their
player into a Win98 computer and issue an "fdisk /mbr"
(doesn't this only write a new mbr to the boot disk,
not any other attached drive?), followed by a disk
format. Perhaps they did some other subtle things as
well, and maybe someone could write in and give
specific instructions.

4) The [unproven] theory is that WinXP writes a
slightly different version of a MBR on the first
sector of the hard drive that the Archos (and perhaps
iRiver) doesn't understand, and therefore won't read
the drive. Simple disk formatting will NOT repair
this. Certain disk partitioning software MAY re-write
this. I could also give instructions on how to erase
an MBR using Linux (such as using my Jukebox utility
disk at:
http://wartstew.homelinux.net/jud
or any of the freely downloadable Linux bootable
CDROMS. Basically the command would go something like
this:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

But don't try this at home unless you can determine
for sure that "/dev/sda" is in fact your Archos/iRiver
hard drive and NOT your ATA133 boot disk, USB memory
stick or SD-memory card slot, etc. YOU HAVE BEEN
WARNED.

Mike et al

Thanks for the help.

After finding that the tracks would not play from the MP3 player but viewed
on Windows Explorer my son backed them up on to his PC. These tracks play
fine from the PC. He has now reformatted the drive in an effort to get it
working. We've tried unscrewing the back and reseating the drive to no
avail.

This leads me to think that it is not the hard drive but the OS. How do we
reflash it - does that mean reinstalling the operating system?

If the hard drive was gone, he would not be able to see his files when
he plugged it into the PC. (I'm assuming it looks like an ordinary USB
   drive at that point.)
The two possibilities that I see from this description are:
   1. The basic OS on the Iriver device may need to be reflashed, or the

   2. He may not actually be seeing the iriver drive when he cables it to

Try your question at www.misticriver.net

Very good forums with knowledgeable people.

There is also an iRiver section on the Anything But iPod forums
www.anythingbutipod.com But the site is a little more consumer and a
little less "tech" oriented.

Hope that helps,

Chris

Jim
If the hard drive was gone, he would not be able to see his files when
he plugged it into the PC. (I'm assuming it looks like an ordinary USB
drive at that point.)
The two possibilities that I see from this description are:
1. The basic OS on the Iriver device may need to be reflashed, or the
ROM is broken.
2. He may not actually be seeing the iriver drive when he cables it to
the PC. Some devices with DRM use their own software, and it may keep
track of what it "supposed" to be on the drive. If you can see the
files on the drive with Windows Explorer then I think the drive is OK.
If the drive is OK in Windows, find a cheap Iriver with a broken drive
and swap it.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips. Misticriver was very helpful but hasn't solved it.
Suspect the HD has gone. Thanks to James also, it wasn't a FAT problem.

My first guess would be what sometimes happens to
Archos Jukeboxes: Someone accidently reformatted the
iRiver's hard drive as NTFS instead of FAT. In this
mode the computer can read it but the iRiver cannot.

The problem may be that it sometimes is not easy to
get it back to FAT without any signs of the previous
NTFS (residing in the MBR?), so that the iRiver will
work again. If you have this problem please respond
back and we can help you through the process.

Are you using Rockbox Firmware? (Hint: you should!)
If so, is it a fairly current version (made in the
last year or so)? The reason I asked is that there
as a minor bug in rockbox for awhile a few years ago
where the Car mode didn't work correctly and I think
the sympton was something like this.

It may sound a bit strange, but I would at first resolder all the well
known power and chassis connections of the AJB. Simply all AJBs have these
problems by the time, causing the strangest errors...

I just purchased a Archos 6000 off of eBay. It works perfectly,
absolutely no problem at all!

Except, when it comes to powering down. When I select "Shut down" it
says "Shutting down" and then the back light start to flash on and off.

Then I can the press stop button to shut the device off.

It will do the same thing when the idle time has expired. Once the
idle time is expired it just sits flashing the bac light on and off.
I press the Stop button and off it goes. So that means I can not use
it in the Car mode. I always have to press the stop button to turn it
off.

I changed the hard drive when I got it. I do not know if this problem
existed when I got the device or after I replaced the hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

Speaking of,

http://insidecomputer.stores.yahoo.net/usb20235hadr.html

Can't beat $13 for a USB/IDE adapter :-) I've bought a bunch of stuff
from this guy and it's all been good. Generic ChiCom stuff but it
works just like the name brand stuff.

I still use this cable on drives going into JBRs because it's faster
than the JBR even with USB 2.0.

Yea, I have one too. I sometimes use it to rescue
peoples' non booting laptop or other things using 2.5"
drives.

> I've made a few bootable cd images over the years,
> but the problem is doing all that work for
> a "one-off" proj.

Yea, I'll probably convert this one once I need to do
another one someday. I only asked to see if someone
else out there cared enough to want to do it before
me.

> I use my various boot disks (linux, W98-no USB,

> On that note, wouldn't one of the very many 'live'
> linux boot disks out there do the same thing?

Yes, sometimes. It depends on if the "ISD-200" option
was enabled on the kernel config for the USB-Storage
device driver or not for the kernel they built for the
boot image. It seems like it often is.

Other problems are that a whole CD image like Knoppix
is a lot to download for many people with slow
connections. Then many would get lost in something
like Knoppix with hundreds of other applications
installed. They would have a hard time knowing where
to go to get the job done. Knoppix and other live
Linux CD's like it are pretty amazing for people who
haven't played with something like this before.

> I was thinking of just booting
> to one of these, and using the built-in fdisk.

Yes. As long as the JB get recognized as a "scsi
disk" by the USB-storage driver, you would be good to
go.

> The only problem I see is that many folks have a
> tough time figuring out the real name of the target
> disk in different OS's.

Yes, with my Jukebox Utility Disk, the JB disk could
easily get confused with flash memory devices and
IDE-RAID controllers. If you know the disk sizes and
partition layouts of your other drives, you should be
able to pick it out of the list. Worst case, with my
disk you can mount some partitions and browse the file
system to see if they are what you think they are
before doing something with them.

> On most partitioning programs I cheat and make sure
> there is not another disk the same size. I use the

> Just a thought, won't know 'til I try.

All good advice when messing around with disks and
partitions. It's serious stuff where stupid mistakes
can cause big problems.

Good luck with the upcoming project. While you have
the JB apart, you might consider touching up the
solder connections on either end of the IDE connector.
That PC board gets flexed by the batter spring
tension and tends to break connections on this board.
You can till if you have this problem beginning to
occur if your player freaks out when you gently twist
it from opposite corners while playing.

James
