Hard to believe it still works, but it does. I have the custom
firmware on it from http://www.rockbox.org/

It rocked for years, but now I use my Zen 8gb flash. 16 hour battery.

I guess the Archos is just a collectors item. Sniff...

I got my Recorder 10 Jukebox out of the drawer for the first time in a
few years, only to find that it had a fatal hard drive error and would
not start up.

I was thinking about getting something smaller and with a better
interface anyway, but I hate to just junk it.

If anyone wants to send me a few bucks to cover postage, I'll send it
your way. If you're in Cincinnati, you can just come get it and never
mind the postage.

I have my Rebuilt Archos Jukebox Player 10 for Sale on Ebay-
Item number: 320271417716

This is an Archos Jukebox 10 player that has been rebuilt by Archos,
they put a new 10 gig hard drive in it.It cost me $75 to have it
rebuilt, and I paid a lot more for it originally. I`m including the
soft case, charger, instruction booklet, USB cord, and setup disc. It
has a fresh set of rechargeable batteries in it, and Rockbox software
installed. Once in a while, it will turn on, but won`t play. I bought
XM, so I don`t use this anymore.

I appreciate the help, and tried twisting it when it wouldn`t start, no change.
I`m not sure it can be a bad connection since, when it doesn`t start, the light
comes on and the screen lights up, but the HD doesn`t spin. Doug

The AA battery versions of the JB's are notorious for eventually developing
broken solder connections near the battery connections at each corner of the
unit. This is caused by the fact that the tension of the battery spring flexes
the PC board that these things are attached to and causes the connections to
break. The solutions is simple for anyone with a soldering iron: Just resolder
the connections.

You can tell if you have this problem once you have the unit playing, hold the
JB at opposite corners and then attempt to twist the JB slightly back and forth.
Try the other two corners too. If the JB stops playing then you have broken
connections, and therefore an intermittent JB.

An additional related problem area I've found is at the end that has the IDE
hard drive connector on it. This connector is also mounted on one of the
flexing PC board. The problem is that the IDE connector won't flex, so what
happens is that some of the soldered connections at each end of the connector
also breaks free causing random disk errors. For me, these connections looked
fine, but were definitely broken because my JB didn't start working again until
I resoldered the first 4 or so columns of pins at each end of the connector.

One other possibility for the random turn-on problem could be slightly weak
batteries, perhaps ones that are physically cold. To turn on and spin up that
hard drive, the Archos surges a lot of current from the batteries. Weak, old,
or cold batteries often are not able to deliver that much current while
maintaining the 4.25 or so volts minimum required to keep the JB running. These
batteries may be otherwise fully charged. I have several sets of batteries that
will no longer work in my JB (or my Digital camera) but work just fine in
flashlights, walki-talkies, mulitmeters, remote controls, and other lower
current devices.

When upgrading drives, sometimes some people manage to the the JB very confused.
I haven't figured out what they do wrong, but a combination of Partition Magic,
Windows-XP (with its artificially limited maximum format capacity for FAT32) and
perhaps and accidental format to NTFS is involved. Anyway the result is that
the computer sees the JB drive and happily reads and writes to it, but the JB
itself can not see or play anything from the drive. There does seem to be a set
of drive geometry parameters that get written to the MBR of the drive that can
be different (sometimes on purpose) from the real life situation, that might be
behind some of this. Several times I've offered to help people with this
problem to diagnose what is going on, but none seemed to have the patience (or
perhaps the confidence) to work through it with me.

Some time ago, I assembled a single bootable floppy disk image I called the
Jukebox Utility Disk. It is here: http://wartstew.homelinux.net/jud . I have
successfully used it to partition and format my 30 Gig drive through the USB
connection while it is installed in the JB. It runs a super stripped down Linux
OS and also has the ability to erase the MBR of the drive in case wrong
information is causing trouble, but it is a "secret" command that is not in the
menu because I don't yet know if is useful, so Email me if you think you need it
and I will give instructions if you promise to tell me if it helped. Yes I
know, nobody has floppies anymore, I guess you could burn an El Torito CD boot
image of it in that case.

I agree about the power usage part. I did shop all the drive specs when I
upgraded my 6-gig Fujitsu to a 30-gig Toshiba, some time ago. I thought I chose
one of the lower power consuming drives (and perhaps I did) but I think it draws
a little more current at startup than my old one does because I've noticed a
decrease in usable battery life. What happens is that eventually that batteries
run down to the point where when it has to spin up the drive, the voltage drops
too much and the JB goes into pause mode. There is actually a fair amount of
capacity left in the batteries at this point because the JB will sit there in
pause mode for a long time, sometimes hours, yet does not have the "cranking
amps" to spin up the drive. So I recommend choosing a drive that has the lowest
spin-up maximum current draw. I would think this would mean a single platter
drive (assuming they can squeeze more than one platter in those tiny things) and
a slower (4200-RPM) unit.

Related idea:

Although one of the reasons I still have and use my old JB6K (now a JB30)
besides the fact it still works, runs Rockbox, and uses cheap common batteries
is the high storage capacities you can achieve with these at low cost. That
said, I've also been playing around with solid-state-flash drives in the
compact-flash (CF) form factor, plugging them into a cheap (like $5 USD Ebay
specials) CF-to-2.5"IDE drive adapters. I then plug that into a laptop
replacing its mechanical IDE hard drive. The result, other than its totally
silent operation, is much longer battery life. (Yea I know about watching out
about too many erase cycles when using the SSD as an operating system drive, but
I'm working on minimizing this). Anyway, these things are starting to really
come down in price as I recently bought an 8-Gig for $40 USD inc/shipping. Some
JB users might want to consider such an upgrade if they aren't just trying to go
for the most storage they can get. I think you can get
64-Gig CF drives, but currently at a high price. Because the spin-up surge
seems to be what stops the JB fairly early on in the battery discharge cycle, I
would not be surprised if you could get 3 times or more play time on batteries
if you had one of these in your JB instead of the old hard drive. You could
treat the unit a little rougher too since there are no heads to crash (other
than your own!).

I've also got one of those cheap, tiny, & common Sigma-Tel based USB-flash 1-Gig
Drive / MP3 player/recorder/radio combo units and marvel how it plays for over
12 hours on a single AAA NiMh battery.

Pick the drive you like - I used to like a - then b (their jumpers were better)
- Now I like drives made by c (price maybe) . but for no good reason - I have a
80 gig in mine I forgot who made it!!

The AA battery versions of the JB's are notorious for eventually developing

You can tell if you have this problem once you have the unit playing, hold the

Try the other two corners too. If the JB stops playing then you have broken
connections, and therefore an intermittent JB.

An additional related problem area I've found is at the end that has the IDE
hard drive connector on it. This connector is also mounted on one of the

happens is that some of the soldered connections at each end of the connector
also breaks free causing random disk errors.

I recently upgrade my Mac to OS X 10.4. I reinstalled the Cypress USB driver

my Archos doesn't work. The hard drive appears on the Mac's desktop and I can
open it and
see the contents, but when I try to do anything else (e.g., delete a file from

I have an Archos Jukebox 10 with 4 AA batteries, it still charges fine, but just
sometimes, it won`t turn on. I can have it not turn on, and then later it will,
without my doing anything to it. Any ideas? I had it rebuilt by Archos, they put
a new HD in it, and I installed Rockbox. Thanks, Doug

watch out for power usage - use slower speed for longer lasting music.
Pick the drive you like - I used to like a - then b (their jumpers were better)
- Now I like drives made by c (price maybe) . but for no good reason - I have a
80 gig in mine I forgot who made it!!
Cheers

Unfortunately you have a JBR V2. Probably the worst product Archos ever built.
I
had two (replaced under warranty) before I upgraded to a V1.

You'll want to get the battery out of the thing if it's bad. AS I learned with
my
second V2, a bad battery will swell, bursting apart the JBR at the seams.

The battery can be replaced, fairly easily. As I recall, it involves taking the
top
end off and picking the battery pack out with a not-so-sharp object. Don't
puncture
the darned thing. The battery is two standard prismatic LiPoly cells in
parallel.
Archos may still sell replacements. The aftermarket surely does. Check with
the
major online battery sales outfits.

Yes I think you might be correct. Although I'm not familiar with
the failure mode of Li-Ion batteries, other types of batteries often
fail with a "short circuit", meaning that it will completely load
down the power source and not allow it make enough voltage to then
power the unit. One could disconnect the batteries to check for
sure, but as you said, this is no easy task.

> Can I just find a new batterie pack and exchange it?
> Any experience with this?

I wonder that once the JB is opened, if the battery pack inside
might be more common than we think? Perhaps one like it could be
found from mobile telephone suppliers or even an old discarded
phone? I'm sure Archos doesn't make their own batteries, but they
might be packaged up in a special plastic carrier that might have to
be cut open to access the raw batteries for replacement.

Be careful not to "short" out a charged Li-Ion battery. This is one
way they then to then catch on fire or explode!

Of course before resorting to all this, I would actually measure
that battery voltage after it has been "charging" for awhile. It is
possible that there is nothing wrong with the batteries or the
charging circuit, but the JB itself has died somehow. That said, my
first guess would be the earlier situation of the the dead battery
loading down the power supply too much.

Another lesser possibility is that the "switching power supply" that
is inside the JB is too weak. This is the thing that is actually
causing the "buzzing" noise. As these things age, there are things
called electrolytic capacitors that fail. They fail gradually,
allowing less and less power to pass through them as time goes on.
These are the same devices that I spoke about earlier that work
better when warmed up. If you do open up the JB, look for a
comparably large cylindrical object with a number fallowed by
a "uf" after it printed on the side. The "u" is actually the greek
letter "mu" so it will look like a backwards "u". This would be the
suspect component. They are inexpensive but will require soldering
skills to replace. I'm not completely sure the JB will have one of
these in side it. It may instead have a tantalum capacitor, which
comes in various shapes, but do not tend to fail over time, so would
not likely be the problem. Archos would resist using these because
they are more expensive.

Hello everybody,
Thank you so much for all your replies! It is so good to know there
are people out there that know how to help!
My wife asked me to reply myself about these technical things.

We bought this "Jukebox Recorder 20GB" in 2004 from the States. It
came with a built-in Li-Ion battery pack, so there is no possibility
to change the batteries at all (as in 4 AA-batteries). I always
wondered how this would work once the batterie pack dies. As I
remember, Archos promised the battery pack will last the whole
Jukebox's life. It is built-in, so you can not even change the pack!
The power supply comes also from the States and does have a heavy
transformer in it. In Germany, we used it together with another
transformer which turns 220 to 110V. However, the power supply is
not the problem, since we almost never used it at all, but used to
charge the batterie pack via USB on the computer.
Right now, when I connect either the power supply or via USB with
PC, I can hear a very low sound, it is like buzzing. That means
there must be some power going into the box. But nothing happens to
the Jukebox at all: No lights go on, no backlights, it appears
absolutely the same as if it was turned off, except the buzz.

Now, what I think might be the problem: I imagine that the outside
power goes "through" the batterie pack, and after this into the
device. If the batterie pack died, the power does not even reach the
device itself. Could this be the problem at all?
Can I just find a new batterie pack and exchange it? Any experience
with this?

Thanks again,
Ralf

Ronia- If its not turning on with the power supply AND the batteries then its
def something within the JUKEBOX itself. Which means opening it up and finding
the problem. A real slight chance that the batteries are gone but it should
still light up even if plugged into the computer. And possibilities of the
charger and the batteries going at once is not likely unless the JB was
subjected to some sort of an electrical charge such as lightning or power surge.

Do you have any activity lights at all?
Do you have the backlight turned way down to zero?
Do you have a little brother who maybe put the batteries in backwards?

If you want to recover the data on the drive you will need a laptop to ide
converter cable to hook the harddrive (after removed from the unit) to your
home PC and then you can remove what is on the disk.

Regular batteries may not be able to be recognized in the jb accurately to get
it going

You can put some new AA batteries in it to check it out. The sides pop
off and the batteries are two on a side and are regular NiMH but
standard batteries should tell you if it is batteries or the charger.

Since you seem to be in Germany, I'll assume you have a regulated
switching power supply with your JB. These are the ones that do not
have heavy transformers in them and are rated to run from a wide
variety of voltages: from 100-240 Volts for example.

Although very nice when they work, these things do wear out after many
hours of use. They will tend to be the worse when they are cold, and
work better when warmed up.

I don't remember all these old models anymore. Did your recorder-20
use 4 AA batteries or does it have the Li-Ion battery pack? The older
4-AA models will run from a wide variety of voltages from about
8-volts all the way past 15-volts! As in the USA the unregulated
supplies we got actually would put put over 15 volts when not under
load. I think there was a series-II recorder or something like that
which used a 5 volt supply and the Li-Ion battery pack. I don't know
much about those because I never owned one, but I remember a common
problem of the battery contacts not making good contact with the
recorder at times. You might check this out to see if this is your
problem. In any case, see if you can substitute a different power
supply, the tip is + on the plugs on both models, and at least on the
older 4-AA types, it burns up a regulator on the inside if your get
this wrong! So be careful. I'm currently running my JB from a power
supply from an old wireless phone.

Another thing to try is to remove the battery pack so the power supply
isn't trying to charge the batteries at the same time as powering the JB.

Worst case, you can take the JB apart and remove the standard laptop
hard drive and connect it to and adapter so you can plug it into your
computer to transfer the files from it. I have a nice cheap IDE to
USB adapter for this, I also have an adapter the adapts it up to a
full sized hard drive. Either way will work.

Good Luck

Hello,

I put a WD 250 GB HD in my Archos Jukebox Player. Now
I need a rockbox-build with the lba48 defines compiled
in. Atherwise I couldn't see the second primary
partition. The one from here:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/BigDisk?rev=1;filename=player.zip
didn't show me the second partition. It didn't appear
in the Rockbox browser as a "virtual subdirectory"
named <HD1>.
And all the descriptions of compiling a rockbox-build
confuses me.

to whoever is interested and asks first. $10.00

I don't have any of the original packaging or disks or anything else.
I do have a backup of the original firmware from the flashable JBR
that was saved in the first flash. I can also put the Rockbox stuff
on a disk for you if you want.

All of these items work beautifully -- there's no problem with them,
I'm just upgrading to a newer mp3 player that runs Rockbox.

Shipping is $8 in the U.S., for all others let me know where you are
so I can figure shipping cost. I can take paypal or personal check or
money order in U.S. dollars.

Please DO NOT reply to the mailing list -- I will only respond to
off-list inquiries. My email address is: nsolo11@... .

Thanks!
Leslie

There are other possibilities too.

1) For less money you can get a "bare" USB to drive adapter that
doesn't include a case. I recently bought one of these things
("XTATIX Portadrive", in my case) new off Ebay for about $15 or so. I
find I use it all the time to deal with all the various hard drives I
have laying around. The one I bought supports 3.5", 2.5" and SATA
drives, but your computer must have enough power to run the 2.5"
drives from the USB port. A lot of laptops don't supply enough power
for this.

2) For even less money you can buy a 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter which
usually includes a small cable and some metal rails to fit the drive
in a PC's 3.5" drive bay and connect an old-style Parallel ATA cable
to it. I bought one of these things years ago for about $6.

So what happened to you Archos JB anyway? (and what model is it just
in case it might be repairable).
