Why are lights not feasible for you? You don't need super expensive
storbes and pocketwizards...

For less that $300, you can light indoors and get good results. That's
less than a 85mm f/1.8 :o

2 vivitar 285HV ($80 brand new, $45 on eBay)
2 super clamps ($27 ea)
1 spool zip cord (18/2 speaker wire) ($32 at Home Depot)
4 add-a-taps ($5 total at the local hardware store)
2 swivel umbrealla holders ($15 ea. I got mine from J and K group on
ebay)
1 PC -> household cord ($4 or make your own)
2 long posts for super clamps ($5 ea)
1 bag zip ties ($3) [ for safty you know]
other random grip/connectors : $15-20

If you don't have anything to clamp onto, then some 13' lite stands are
in order. I picked mine up for $45 each again from J and K group on
eBay. If you're using lite stands, don't forget to add some sand bags
in there as well. I've got 4 10lb ones.

For a little extra you can use a high capacity battery to power the
flashes. I'm building 4 of them right now. About $25 ea and should
give me around 600-800 full power flashes with 1-2 sec recycle time.
The charger's more expensive at $70 with shipping :-) Now you could
go with a store bought model for MUCH MUCH more and that'll work, but
I'm a bit more frugal than that.

You can also buy pre-built battery packs here:
http://www.aljacobs.com/BatteryProductLine.htm
Basically the same as what I'm building, except the ones's I'm building
have a little more capacity(7amp vs. 5amp) as they are being built
strictly for long setups doing sports, weight is less of a factor and
duration is. Al's come in a nice case and the charger for $100. $5
more than mine without the cabeling and soldering!

Here are some examples of basketball shot with the lighting setup above:

Yea, some Elinchrom 600's would be nice, but... again, I'm looking to
NOT shoot at ISO 1600/3200 or f/1.8 :-D

Now I have picked up some pocketwizard Multimaxes recently and those aid
in setup tremendously, but still kinda pricey, but worthwhile. I've
got a deal on multimaxes if anyone is interested, please drop ME an
email and NOT the list if you're interested.

good luck,
brian

that's why I don't like shooting above 800 ISO prints are limited. I was using my shutter at 1/350 and it seemed too dark...1/250 even seemed a bit too dark...
