I am looking for a company to purchase wood grain and black plaques to mount
8x10 and 5x7 photos to. Typically they come with a plastic cover and 4 tacks to
hold them in place. I recall getting an email from a company about 2 years ago
advertising discounts on them when purchased in bulk. We print on site and would
like to offer the plaques for add on sales. Does anyone have a company that they
purchase these from?

Thanks!

Randy,

You can check with a company called Discount Trophy. Their website address is:
http://www.discount-trophy.com/.
You might need a resale license to purchase products from them, I am not
completely sure.  They have a huge selection of products to choose from.  I have
seen what you are looking for in their catalog.

Hello everyone ,I've been in your group for a while now but yet to post
anything. I'm a long time photographer that decided to start shooting
sports and other events about two years ago. Up to this point I would
shoot the event/game and post the pictures to my Pro Smugmug account.
I've seen thousands of hits but very few sales. Anyway, I'm going to try
on site printing. I've selected the Sony UPdr200 as the printer. Now I'm
trying to work out the photo selection process / workflow. Customers
selecting photos is the bottle neck in my current process. I currently
own lightroom, photoshop & photofusion software. Photofusion has been a
good print output program but I can't seem to develop a way to allow
customers to view & select photos without getting backed up and then
losing sales.

What are you using to manage the customer photo selection process. I'm
interested in both HW and SW.

Tim,

One option, and this has worked well for me.  I make proofs sheets, with 16
images on a page.  I then put all the proofs of one team in binder.  So now each
team has their own binder with their proofs.  Then the parents can then come to
you with the file numbers of the images they want.  With your sony printer you
should be able to print their images in no time flat.  You can also have viewing
stations with computer stations, but that is a more costly option.

Derrick,

I like the proof sheet idea. However, I'm so into my workflow of editing photos
before posting online or wanting to show them how the finished product will look
compared to an "out of camera" image that needs cropping and tweaking.

I can do up to 300 photos downsized and cropped and uploaded to my site in about
30mins, but for onsite that would not be an option in my opinion. So, do you do
proof sheets of images "out of camera"?

Tool: Vertus Fluid Mask

Pros: Background doesn't have to be perfectly lit nor does it have to be green
screen. In fact, it could be crappy and you'll still get an excellent cutout.
Cost is around $120 (I bought with a discount coupon), very reasonable for the
level of the technology compared with something like Digital Anarchy's Primatte
3. It automatically does edge detection, and is capable of correctly processing
traditionally difficult areas like hair or trees and so forth. The more
sophisticated uses require a bit of hands on practice and a look at the tutorial
materials. The name of the game is TIME is MONEY. This product saves me time.
YMMV. See my review at the B&H web site.

Cons: The more sophisticated the usage, the more you'll need to learn about the
capabilities of the product. If you have no patience at all, this may not be the
ideal product for you.

Would you recommend? HIGHLY

> Thanks for any input.

PS. DO NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF COREL KNOCKOUT 2. It is chock full of bugs and
there is no support.

What printer are you using to print your proof sheets?I know when I did a cheer
competition I spent $140 on ink for proof sheets. That was photos for 55 squads.
So, I am looking into monitors, as I can get them cheaper than $140. I know I
need a printer that uses cheaper ink, so I'm curious as to what you use.

We utilize the on site viewing stations and have sony printers for 5x7 and
8x10's. One important piece is the express digital software and the viewing
station software which is  photo parata. The shopping cart feature in photo
parata is loved by our customers as they add images after each game and event
and we sell a lot of discs with their images on them. Express digital is great
becasue it allows you to quickly edit shots and place them in templates without
editing the original...did I mention it was fast?  Also our viewing stations
are run by hardware from ncomputing (great item and great price).

It seems to me your issue is getting the images in front of your customers. Two
schools of thought here are proofs and viewing stations. I know companies that
swear by both but the viewing stations works hands down for us.

One of the keys to selling event photos on site is having the images available
immediately after the event if not sooner. Many times we will shoot 50 or 100
images and load them and return to shooting more of the same event. That way
there is no wait to see photos immediately for your customers. Another key is
being able to get their money that day. If we can not keep up with orders we
will have them complete an order form and take their money then. We also offer
the enticement of getting event day prices (33% less expensive than on line) and
free shipping.

If you have any more questions please contact me directly.

My Specialty is on-site printing. Look into dye sublimation printers...fast
with high quality. Sony- Mitsi & Shinko are good solid machines. You will
\pay more for the printer but the quality & speed will increase sales in the
long run. The Shinko 8x10 prints in 30 secs. and $1.10 or so per 8x10 then
combine using Express Digital software the $400 version is a good program to
use. Event work and on-site printing is about quality & speed. Hope
this helps...if you need referral to good companies to buy from let me
know, Peace

Scott,

Yes the images were right out of the camera.  I would  have samples of edited
and processed, and cropped prints as well as posters to let the parents know if
they were to purchase any photos they would be much better than the appearance
of the proofs.  For any parent wanting to purchase photos, the appearance to the
proofs was not a problem once they were reassured how the images they purchased
would turn out.   But if the appreance of the proofs was an issue with the
parents, I would be able to see or hear their concerns and assure them they
would happy with the final product they would receive.

But for online, it seems much better to do it your way Scott.  Being that no one
is there with them in their home to tell them how much better the final product
will be.

Scott,

Yes the images were right out of the camera.  I would  have samples of edited
and processed, and cropped prints as well as posters to let the parents know if
they were to purchase any photos they would be much better than the appearance
of the proofs.  For any parent wanting to purchase photos, the appearance to
the proofs was not a problem once they were reassured how the images they
purchased would turn out.   But if the appreance of the proofs was an issue
with the parents, I would be able to see or hear their concerns and assure them
they would happy with the final product they would receive.

But for online, it seems much better to do it your way Scott.  Being that no
one is there with them in their home to tell them how much better the final
product will be.

I do this as well and put all the images in online galleries. I have a
continious slideshow running with about 50 great images on a 43 inch flatscreen
TV at the event. The slideshow runs right off my SmugMug account so it is easy
to update and change. It also has slides that I premade that tell people how
to buy and contact info etc. I run these about every 15 images in the
slideshow. I show the different products and specialty images with tournament
graphics etc. I shoot a lot of Provincial sports tournaments and this has worked
well for me.

I just want to know how you process images at a 6 second clip...it takes me
hours each night to get them all cropped and uploaded :(

you do proof sheets of images "out of camera"?

I take out the memory card and do a fast edit of all the garbage photos. I then
batch rename the files (20secs). Then I downsize the images to at least 50% or
33% of their size (no more than 1-2 mins) and then I go through Photoshop and
and crop each image (5x7 72dpi) and then use actions to do a rough edit on the
photos and save to a seperate folder. Cropping and using the actions to save
each image to the "upload folder" is done in roughly 3-4 secs each max. Then I
upload those to the site. When I'm really moving and on tight deadlines I can
crank out 300 images in roughly 30mins as I stated. It's all about finding a
workflow that works for you and that you can operate in a timely manner for your
needs. The most time is taken up buy importing the downsized images into
photoshop and then uploaded them to the site. Everyone has their own workflow,
this just works for me.

Glenn,

Simple two button action sequence.

Assign actions to F2 & F3

F2 something like levels, hue & saturation.

F3 sharpen, save & close.

So then its crop, F2 & F3 then on to next photo and repeat. Takes about 3-4
seconds per image.

We have added tutorial videos to show how to pump up / tone down color on
templates.

Lighten a border or background that you find to dark for your taste.

Darken a border or background that you find too light.

Clone out parts of a template.

You can view them now @ http://www.templatesunlimited.com/tutorials.html

We will be redoing The Pride (cutout) and TwoThree style posters to make them
better and add audio to better show how to do these. All other videos will not
have audio.

Thanks everyone for all the great information. I really appreciate you taking
the time to share your work flows with me. Well I've been exploring the way
Randy says he does it. I looked into Photo Parata and I believe I want to use
viewing stations. It's going to cost more to do this but it could be a big
savings over time. I calculated the cost for printing thumbnails on 6X8s for
each team / each game and that would be hundreds of dollars for each tournament.
I'm currently testing the SW and building the LAN for the viewing stations.

Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
