Subject: More Halloween explanations for non-Americans + some ascii

Hi everyone,

After I posted the dancing skeletons with an explanation of the words, I
received two requests from people in other countries trying to understand
exactly what Halloween was, when it was, and how one worded wishes regarding
Halloween to friends on the net. Marketing and advertising people in this
country figure that for every letter they receive as a complaint or comment,
there were 400 who thought the same thing but didn't bother to write. Since
emailers are more more likely to write than people who would have to write snail
mail, I'll assume the number of people wondering was less than 800; however, I
think it's safe to say there more than a few.

USA-born people know all that's written below, so you can just scroll down to
the ascii. [Except the very last part of this of this section writen by
"YnrChyldzWyld " from which I learned some things I didnt know.] However, if
you read it and have anything to add that I left out, please let me know. (I'd
really like to know what the date for Japan is.) Halloween is always on October
31st. In Mexico it is called "El Dio de los Muertes" which translates as "The
Day of Dead". It is religious day for remembering loved ones who have died.
People put flowers and sometimes food on graves; if they don't have easy access
to the graves, then they put out photographs or drawings of their loved ones and
light candles in remembrance. In Japan there is also a specific day for
remembering the dead, but I think it is some time in August; it definitely isn't
October 31.

In the USA, of course, we have commercialized it into a day that makes
manufacturers rich; it has nothing to do with remembering the dead. When I was
a child, the children would dress up like ghosts, goblins, witches, or something
really scary; we'd go to our neighbors' housees, knock on the door and shout
"Trick or Treat". "Trick or Treat" meant the neighbor had to give us some candy
or we might do something bad to them. "Something bad" meant drawing funny faces
on their windows with soap or something that was annoying but not really
destructive. There were some people, usually teenagers, who chose to be really
destructive like breaking car windows, throwing paint on houses and cars, and so
on. If they were caught, they were arrested by the police. Back in the early
1960s, one person in some town put poison or a strong laxative (I can't remember
which) in the candy he handed out to the children. Several children were
hospitalized. Since then there has been far less "Trick or Treating". My
children were small then. I would go through their their treat bags and remove
anything that wasn't vacuum packaged if it came from a house where I did not
know the residents. In subsequent years I simply didn't allow them to go to any
house unless we knew the people well enough to trust them. As the years have
gone on parents have become increasingly concerned--at least in urban areas--and
the schools usually have parties or dances or parents put on private parties to
keep the kids off the streets.

At the present we live on a very busy boulevard; we have not had any
trick or treaters here in 6 years; I think we have had none because there are
no children on our street, and most parents want to keep the groups of children
away from busy thoroughfares.

Today Halloween is no longer just for children. It is a time when children and
adults can dress up as anything or anyone they choose: characters from movies
and TV like Superman, Stars Wars characters, angels, Cher, anything thatappeals
to them. People frequently give costume parties. There are still places,
mostly small towns, where children still trick or treat. In the cities they
are more likely to go to a party held at school or, for teenagers, a high school
dance. (The idea is to keep them out of trouble; of course, there is still
time after the dance for mischief if the teens chose to do some.)

You do not "congratulate" someone on Halloween; you would "congratulate"
someone on his or her birthday for example. For Halloween you just say "Happy
Halloween". A few people send cards to close friends and family members; not
many people do that; this year I got 2. I should have sent cards to several
children in the family, but I was ill, and it didn't get done. Email greetings
with ASCII illustrations are very popular among children and adults.

I posted the skeletons with the song works for non-Americans because I had
visions of foreigners trying to look up "de", "dem", and "lawd" in their
dictionaries. American English is particularly difficult to
understand. Since I have worked for the University of California at Berkeley,
Stanford University, and several Silicon Valley companies, I have worked with
people from nearly every country in the world. In other countries professional
workers speak the formal version of their language. I think only the USA has
extensive use of slang and informal language among professionals. [Can anyone
tell me if it's common to use slang among British professionals?]

I have had countless gifts from guests leaving this country who told me, "You
were the only person here I could always understand; I'm sorry I bothered you
so much." Well, it wasn't a bother. All I did was speak slowly and distinctly
in
formal English. Please feel free to ask additional questions. I do know how
hard it is to comprehend American English and customs.

One thing to be aware of. I used to work as a technical writer so my English
was very good. For the past 7 years I have been recovering from a brain
injury. When I am tired, I make mistakes in grammar and spelling. Curiously, I
usually
don't make mistakes in complicated words. The words I have trouble with are
those I learned between the 3rd and 5th years of school; for example, I have
written "dile" for "dial" (like on a telephone). So, if you read something
that doesn't make sense, please inquire about it.

[Note for non-Americans: The words by the skeletons are from a well-known
spirtitual sung by Blacks and are written in the dialect commonly used in the
last century. What is written is only part of the song. The real song starts
at the top of the head and works down to the feet. In English ( not
*correct* English) they read:

Just to add a little something to the explanation regarding Halloween...
The word "Halloween" is a contraction of "All Hallow's Eve", since
November 1 is "All Hallow's Day", or "All Saints Day" in the Catholic
church.

But the Catholic church only adopted a much older holiday that had been
celebrated by northern European pagans for centuries, and put a Christian
veneer to it (just as they did with Christmas and Easter).

The ancient pagan holiday is known as "Samhain", which is pronounced
"Sew-In", meaning summer's end. It was the time of the year the Mother
Goddess, in her guise as a crone, went for her sojourn in the underworld,
leaving behind her male consort who, amongst other things, ruled the
reindeer herds, and was often shown wearing reindeer antlers (the
Christian church later demonized the Mother Goddess crone as an evil old
witch, and her horned male consort as the familiar horned devil)...

November 1st was the beginning of the new year to these ancient peoples,
and it was believed that the division between the land of the living and
the land of the dead disappeared on their "New Years Eve", e.g. the night
of October 31st, and the spirits of departed loved ones would come to
visit the living. And just as one would be expected to offer treats to
corporeal visitors, so to was one expected to treat the incorporeal
visitors, or risk having them play a prank on the rude host or hostess...

Hence, the inception of 'trick or treat'... ;-)

Along with the spirits of departed loved ones, more fearsome spirits
roamed on that night amongst the living, and to frighten off such demons,
people would paint or carve gruesome faces to put in their windows or
doorways...the favorite choice was to carve turnips, but when the Irish
immigrated to America in the 1800s, they found pumpkins much easier to
carve than turnips, and so the custom of carving Jack'o'lanterns out of
pumpkins was born...
