Call for Nominations for ABA 2008 nominations and election

For registered ABA members as of 25 October, 2008.

According to the Constitution of ABA every two years there is an election for the Board of ABA. Please see the constitution for reference. In particular articles:

"6.1 Officers of the Association shall be the President, seven vice-presidents (one from each of China, India, Japan, Korea, South Asia (East of India), West Asia (West of India), and Asian Ethnic and Religious Minorities, and a General Secretary. They are nominated and/or elected by members of the Association. The President can serve a maximum of two years in office.  The Other Officers should stand re-election every two years."

"6.4 A vice-president can be elected for a maximum of two successive terms as a vice president."

Every member of good standing (=has registered with the secretary as a ABA member for 2008) can nominate candidates for the Board, stand for Board elections, and vote in the elections. The following board positions are up for re-election in October, 2008 with the new board to be announced on November, 2008, for the next two year period.  The current board was elected on 21 November 2006, so the next board will take effect on 21 November 2008. Anyone nominated needs to confirm their willingness to be ABA Board members and to be members.

The  board positions open to nomination are:

1) President: vacant

(under the constitution a president stands only two years and thus Dr. Jayapual Azariah will retire, but be a member of the future Board as immediate past president)

A nomination has been received and accepted for the election of Prof. Leonardo de Castro as the next ABA President.

Alternative candidates for this Board post and all the other Board positions are welcome.

2) Vice-president requiring a new person

Due to the limitation for vice-presidents of a maximum of two terms, the following position needs to be renewed

Vice President for Korea: Prof. Un Jong Pak

A nomination has been received and accepted for the election of Prof. (Ms.) Young-Rhan Um as the next ABA President.

Alternative candidates for this Board post and all the other Board positions are welcome.

3) Other board positions

All other current board members seek renomination, but the positions are also open to nomination for contesting in an election.

Vice President for China: Yanguang Wang

Vice President for India: Abnik Gupta

Vice President for Japan Atsushi Asai

Vice President for West Asia Aamir Jafferey

Vice-President for South Asia Soraj Hongladarom

Vice President for Asian Ethnic and Religious Minorities: Alireza Bagheri

Secretary: Darryl Macer (Thailand/New Zealand)

The Board also welcomes persons who wish to act as country or regional representatives, and volunteers are requested by the secretariat.

The responsibility of Board members includes attending ABA Board meetings, and to attend ABC conferences, noting that this may mean finding your own funds to participate in the conference.

The closing date for nomination and acceptance of candidates is 25 October. Candidate names and acceptance from the candidates should be Emailed to: asianbioethics@...

In the event that there is only one candidate nominated for each position by 25 October, the position will not need  to be subject to election. The positions which are contested will be subject to a secret Email ballot between 26 October-6 November. Every paid up ABA member as of 31 October, 2006, can make one vote for each contested position.

ABA Membership list (including those who have not paid up for 2008 yet) and the ABC2008 Conference programme (as of 8 October 2008) are available on:

Registration and ABA membership fee
The registration fee for members of the Asian Bioethics Association USD50; and for non-member USD100.
i.e. those who have paid their membership fee for 2008 and are members of ABA will receive half price registration for ABC9.
If you have not been a member in 2008, ABA will offer you the chance to become a member of ABA for both 2008 and 2009 at discount when combining registration for the conference: Instead of USD50 x 3 =USD150 (2008, 2009 fees and reduced registration fee), the package will be charged at USD135 payable by credit card to ABA secretariat. The form is available in the pdf file version of this issue, or as a printed form (please download from http://www.eubios.info/EEIorderform.pdf
).

Membership fees are usually payable at the time of renewal to EJAIB, the official journal of ABA. A three tier system exists for annual fees:

a) Regular price (US$50 Euro 50 Yen 5000).

This includes the EJAIB journal subscription and free associate membership of Eubios Ethics Institute.

b) Reduced contribution (the amount is up to the member, and is also suggested for students)

This includes the EJAIB journal subscription.

c) No fee, because the person is not in a position to pay the fee.

This does not include a hard copy of the EJAIB journal, but anyone can apply to Eubios Ethics Institute separately for a hard copy of the Journal, to be considered case by case.

I urge all members to join the yahoo email listserve for ease of communication: asianbioethics@yahoogroups.com

The ABA Board looks forward to seeing you in Indonesia, and the general meeting will be held at midday on 6 November at the Conference.

with best wishes

Darryl Macer

Secretariat
