Research Associate or Senior Research Associate:

Cesagen Sociomics Core Facility

Research Associate: £24,877 - £28,839;          Senior Research Associate: £30,594 - £35,469

Cesagen is seeking an imaginative and versatile individual to join the team at its digital methods unit, the Sociomics Core Facility (SCF). The SCF develops and applies Web 2.0 digital methods and analytics to provide innovative ways of examining networks, issue formation, indicators, intellectual property, publics, knowledge economies and knowledge production in and around genomics and the biosciences. To do this we use mapping software, databases and text mining tools and we have created our own open source iGoogle style Research Desktop (http://sociomics.lancs.ac.uk/).

You must be able to combine an enthusiasm for digital research methods (e.g. tools for web research, mashups, mapping, visualisation, text-mining and database analysis) with social science and/or humanities research questions on genomics and the biosciences. In return you will join an ESRC funded research centre under the Directorship of Professor Ruth Chadwick that is internationally recognized for excellence in social science and humanities research on genomics and the biosciences (http://www.genomicsnetwork.ac.uk/cesagen/). Cesagen is also the largest node in the wider UK ESRC Genomics Network (http://www.genomicsnetwork.ac.uk/).

Cesagen at Lancaster is led by Associate Director, Professor Brian Wynne, and includes researchers working on nutrigenomics and foods, forensic genomics, proteomics, biodiversity and sustainable development, intellectual property, synthetic biology, animal genomics, human enhancement, security, stem cells and biofuels. We have a strong commitment to international level work with developing countries and informing UN and related policy debates. You will be expected to contribute to our ongoing success through the pursuit and further development of a research agenda focusing on the potential of digital methods in an area relevant to genomics and the biosciences.

The appointment will be at Research Associate (Grade 6) or Senior Research Associate (Grade 7) level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the appointee. Relevant research experience and a good first or second class honours degree is essential. Applicants are requested to make it clear for which grade they are applying.

Closing date: Monday 5th January 2009.                    This is a fixed term position for 3 years.

If you are interested in applying for either of these vacancies, please visit the following web page for further details:
