In order to determine possible cause of the lift and how to remove it all now so
that it can be reattached, you need to advise what you used to attach it
originally.

I use contact cement to attach laminate (standard for attaching laminate in most
situations involving laminate and wood - counter tops, etc.). Depending on what
your altitude bearings are made of will determine ultimate method. Assuming
plywood, apply one coat of contact cement to the bearings and let it dry
according to the directions, then apply a second coat. When applying the second
coat to the bearings also apply a coat to the laminate. After drying the
appropriate time, stick the laminate to the bearing and use a roller or clamp
jib to apply pressure and press the laminate onto the bearing. This should last
a very long time. (I use this method for my telescopes also when "laminating"
layers of wood together for furniture and cabinet making, etc.)

Hi Berthold, Nice video and yes much better spin in this lap action. It looks
like the ZOC method of figuring. You have about the correct turntable to
eccentric ratio. I use 5.55:1. You might want to check your ratio and make
sure it is not a rapidly repeating pattern. If it is it can reduce radomization
of the figuring stroke. Look on the Zambuto web group under the photos section
the diagrams folder and you will find an image for lap action. This is the
pattern that the quil should make if it was marking on a piece of paper. If you
end up with a 5 spoke repeating star I would try to alter the ratio.

Good luck Dave H.

What correction are you attempting to do?

Hi,

I just uploaded a new video to youtube showing different offsets in an attempt to push correction to the edge. It is interesting to observer the swirl patterns especially in the last scene. This time the lap (140mm) is rotating according to textbook (for all of you who got a bit worried there ;-)

Dominic-Luc, I know you have had problems dealing with PP in the past, which
was why I said I know that it's not a perfect option, but it's the one that
is easiest for the greatest number to access. Which is also why I asked if
anyone had a better idea....

Personally I've never had a problem, but then I made a point of not
confirming anything but my address (9 years and two house moves ago), cards
and bank accounts remain unconfirmed. This means that I can transfer money
out of my PP account, but not into it, which means they can't dip into my
accounts, although they might be able to bill my CC, but that's real hard to
get away with now, and leaves the paper trail from hell. Besides PP went and
set up an Aussie arm, so they are now bound by not just US law, but also
Australian law, and our banking laws (no offence meant) are quite a bit
tougher than the US ones....

So I feel if not "safe" then acceptably low risk enough with the idea to
make the offer.

The next issue becomes one of if we go with the direct mail option, is Dave
ok with his address being passed around? Considering his sleeping
arrangements right now, I'd hazard it's a "no".

Just some thoughts to further things along.

Cheers, Thomas Janstrom.

Paypal is very careful in hiding in the fine print that it IS NOT
a bank and some of us have been robbed by Paypal, especially those
outside USA where there is generally no legal recourse. Giving
money to Paypal is fundamentally no more secure than handing cash
over to a stranger on the street and hoping for the best. To that
end, people are better off sending money direct. After getting robbed
by Paypal (Jerry Brown offering greatest of support to Paypal, BTW),
it became clear to me cash in an envelope enjoys better security and
legal protection.

I would only send letter to David directly.

Ulhas,

The tool is offset gradually during sessions according to the figuring examples of Carl Zambuto to take correction to the edge. Range is aprox. from 6mm through 40mm. Overhang is adjusted to remain constant during different offsets.

Vladimir,

I'm quite happy to do the coordinating, but as I'm in Australia and you're
in Hungary, we'd have to find someone a bit more local to do the honours a
deliver whatever we end up with.

I know that the royalties from his book will add up to next to nothing,
being as you say he had to sell the rights to get it published, but for now
it's better than nothing.

So *if* we want to pass the hat around please let me know, and I'll set up a
special purpose PayPal account (I know about the problems with PP, but there
are few other options available that are as internationally accessible, if
you have a better option please let me know off list), and when the
donations stop (or at the end of each month if it works out that way) I will
find a way to get it all to him, even if I have to mail it to him, but I'd
prefer it if we could find a member to present the proceeds in person....

So if anyone has a better idea or comment on this please chime in.

Cheers, Thomas Janstrom.

I think that what Thomas proposed is closest to be efficient. Buying the
book
is unfortunately not, because David sold the rights to publisher and will
get
practically nothing. David told me that when I ordered the book.
I think that Richard (S) who cared most for David in "real time" and with
real actions,
can suggest what kind of help we can do to be practical and efficient.
I am in, and will accept his proposals fullhartedly.

Regards
Vladimir.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your input!

Most likely a bit overpressed. However, contact is very good and as someone on another group mentioned that could be also the cause for it not spinning freely. The results of its action are nevertheless good and I will give it a good workover and microfacetting.

Hi Berthold. It looks like you have about the right ratio of stroke to turntable speed which is good for figuring but the lap should spin close to the turntable rate and indicates not perfect contact. This can be caused by under pressing the lap and over pressing the lap. It can also be caused by the channeling of the lap. When it is perfect it will spin at about 3.5 RPM.

Hi Berthold. It looks like you have about the right ratio of stroke to
turntable speed which is good for figuring but the lap should spin close to the
turntable rate and indicates not perfect contact. This can be caused by under
pressing the lap and over pressing the lap. It can also be caused by the
channeling of the lap. When it is perfect it will spin at about 3.5 RPM.

FYI Dave H.

While the lap has to rotate during polishing, it is not supposed to do so during figuring.

Turntable and eccentric speeds are reversed for figuring, so TT turns at 3.5 rpm while eccentric turns at 20 rpm.

Phase Shifted Interferometry with Bath interferometer aka "PSI-Bath".

Much simpler, faster and more accurate than Foucault with Couder mask.
Uneven light distribution is non-issue for this method.

I think that what Thomas proposed is closest to be efficient. Buying the book
is unfortunately not, because David sold the rights to publisher and will get
practically nothing. David told me that when  I ordered the book.
I  think that Richard (S) who cared most for David in "real time" and with real actions,
can suggest what kind of help we can do to be practical and efficient.
I am in, and will accept his proposals fullhartedly.

Yeah, I was really shocked when I heard about his plight, the worst part is I was over in the US three months back and had planned to visit him, but I ran out of time (I got side tracked by friends in FL), I felt awful when I had to tell him I couldn’t visit and now I feel even worse!

Don’t know, but it couldn’t hurt to ask him if he’d be interested in a “motivational speaking” gig.

I guess anything that gets him up and about with the knowledge that he is a valued member of our community would help, maybe make admission to a “lecture” by, as we say over here in Australia where we have $1 and $2 coins (both gold coloured), gold coin donation. I know it doesn’t sound like much but it would put a decent meal on his table wouldn’t it?

Maybe we could set up a PayPal account and pass the hat around and then send him a cheque for Christmas? Does beg the question “would he accept” he does have his pride after all, and I really wouldn’t want to tread on that, no matter the kindness behind the actions!

Anyone else have any ideas?

Cheers, Thomas Janstrom.

I loaned my three American Scientific telescope books to one of my grandsons. (He returned them safely, thank you.) The next thing I get from the kid is a big photo of him sitting on the mount of the "big eye" on top of that mountain in Hawaii.  (now a professional astronomer)

The moral is to be careful of what you read, it can have consequences.

Indeed, and I'm the guy who build it. Last issue I'm trying to resolve, as both
Jan and Mel will know, is some micro-slippage in the Altitude bearing [small
nylon wheels and hard-rubber on the sectors]. Any advise is more then welcome.

Richard,

I don't know what his revenues are on his publication, but maybe we should
all buy a copy of his "Understanding Foucault" book?
http://netzaripress.org/understanding%20foucault.htm

Taking in consideration the number of ATM's on the relevant Yahoo lists +
European ATM's, I think however small his returns are, it definitely would
help him. And his book should be on every ATM's bookshelf anyway.

It is a 12" f/5.3,  with Mel's stepper motor drive system.

I've read and re-read "How to Make a Telescope" many times.

As far as I am concerned, there is not a wasted word in the sections regarding making the basic mirror.  The nuance of some passages becomes more apparent after a few mirrors are made.
