as svg,it works well.
second,I have downloaded the pstoedit-3.33,ming_0.2a,ImageMagick-
6.0.3 to compiling the autotrace and successful making the
autotrace.exe file.But when I running,it has occured the application
err.Memorry Can't written.But Why?

I hope we can resolve some issues. Freetype2 for example is not used by
AutoTrace at all but by ImageMagick. If you use ImageMagick you can run into
such problems that cannot be solve by AutoTrace itself. I forward your mail
to the AutoTrace mailing list.

Hello Martin,

In the readme file from autrotrace says to see the install file for
installation procedures, but the file is not in the zip file.
What do I have to do to install it?
The installations procedures for delineate requires to have autotrace and
portrace installed before hand.

Thank you,

Rob,

When I run the delinate batch file all I get is a DOS windoe that says
'OFF' and the program ends.

I'd appreciate a push in the right direction.

Thanks.

I couldn't get Deliniate working using the .BAT file for DOS/WINDOWS.
I did get it to work using the .SH file with CYGWIN (Linux emulation)

Martin,

My name is Dave Clemens.. I've downloaded Autotrace but cannot locate the
install file...
Where might I find that??

Also, I'm curious.. Does Autotrace convert pixels streams to lines and arcs
by making assumptions?

Any tutoring or guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

I only did it using VC++, but I think it is also possible using the Windows
version of gcc, but you have to adopt the configure ..., sorry I don't know
how.

Hallo Martin,

Ich habe downloaded autotrace for NT, but can not find any install.txt
file.

I have unzipped and have it in a floder under Program files. How do I
install it. I am trying to use delineate and it asks for autotrace and
portrace.

The web site is very useful, but it is off-line for more than one
week(at least since I tried to use it again).

Thank you so much,
Alice

I just took some time and played with the Windows .BAT file for Delineate
(GUI for POTRACE & Autotrace). I got it to work by using the following in
the .bat file:

REM -------delineate.bat-----------
cd \
cd C:\{PATH}\delineate\0.5
javaw -jar .\delineate.jar .\settings\parameters-autotrace.xml
.\settings\parameters-potrace.xml
REM -------delineate.bat-----------

Note that I removed the START ... That was in the original.
I also changed the /'s to \'s

That javaw is VERY picky about paths it seems.

We have someone doing Calligraphy type stuff for us and scanning it in.
There might be slight indentions/bumps in the text. Are there any settings
to tweak that might help iron these out?

The text is mainly large sweeping curves, like a fancy handwriting.

FYI: It looks like the 'corner surround' value is what I was looking for!
The output was amazing once I bumped that number over to maximum. It was

Hi

i have some drawings with dithered areas (and some rastered b&w photos)
that I'd like to convert to vector graphics.

When I use autotrace on those raw images the result are (as expected)
huge vector files
with lots of small filled areas.
I've preprocessed some of those files manualy with gimp and rather good
autotrace results.

Does anyone know a tool (prefered cmd line) that does these
conversions/filtering automaticly?

is there any way to generate straight line instead of splines with the

I tried some values for -line-reversion-threshold and -line-threshold,
but the result were ether
splines or differed from a autotrace run without those options.

Frank;
The driver does not support that feature, but you are able to convert
splines to polylines in xfig.

shure .. but only manualy

maybee i gonna port that function from the dxf driver to the xfig driver
or implement it in my converter program (xfig to gpsman-tracks).

my manual method was a bit to "visual" to be automated
- select contiguous region
- fill that region with a new color
etc.

i remember that there are filter algorithms for undithering
(from years ago when i helped a friend to prepare for her computer
graphics exam)
but i dont find a "ready to use" program that does this.

Hello Martin,

I have downloaded your AutoTrace version 0.31.1, I can convert the bitmap
into pdf with AutoTrace, but I cannot convert the bitmap file into dxf
file, what am I doing wrong?

To PDF Command:
autotrace.exe -output-format pdf -output-file c:\mutiline.pdf
c:\mutiline.bmp

To DXF Command:
autotrace.exe -output-format dxf -output-file c:\mutiline.dxf
c:\mutiline.bmp

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Linda

Hi there

I have just downloaded Autotrace and have tried to run it – on XP, and am using the following command to run it:

Autotrace c:\bl.bmp

All that happens is a lot of output to the screen – no files created anywhere.

I have tried many other combinations

Autotrace –output-format wmf c:\bl.bmp                       etc etc

But no files created anywhere

Please can you help me with the correct command – I need to get a wmf (vector) file from a picture etc

Many thanks

Derek

I think you need to specify your output file.
I think by default since you aren't specifying it gets sent to standard
output to be accepted by another program, etc

I use XP and I created a .bat file to allow drag and drop...
These options are set to help correct Calligraphy/handwriting that is
scanned in.
You may want to remove some of the options and let the defaults kick in.

At the basic level I think you need at least
autotrace.exe -output-format wmf -output-file {outputfile} {inputfile}
You may want to also look at Delineate (GUI). I used it to come up with
these settings...

;**** myAutoexec.bat ****
;***** Drag your input file to this bat file... ****
;This sample uses SVG as output

set file1=%~1

set options=-background-color FFFFFF -corner-always-threshold 20
-corner-surround 16 -corner-threshold 80 -despeckle-level 10
-despeckle-tightness 6.7 -error-threshold 3.1 -filter-iterations 16
-line-reversion-threshold 0.16 -line-threshold 2.0 -preserve-width
-tangent-surround 1 -output-format svg -output-file

"C:\AutoTrace\autotrace.exe" %options% "%file1%.svg" "%file1%"
;**** end myAutotexec.bat ****

The DXF output seems to be broken in the current version. Try a older
version, or convert to another file format, then use another program to
convert this format to DXF.

Hello,

I'm exploring your wonderful tool, Autotrace. I have
a problem with the latest build (0.31.1) on windows.
Autotrace will crash if you use some of the optional
commands. Unfortunately one of the crash commands is
help. When I try, autotrace -help, only a portion of
the help file is printed to the console befofre
autotrace crashes. I can live with this as I'm only
experimenting at the moment. However, it would be
great to be able to read the whole help file. Since
it's only available within Autotrace itself, I was
hoping you could send me a text version so I can see
all of the commands.

  Thank you,

  Craig Gulow

Hi Craig,

please find, at the bottom of the mail, the output of autotrace 0.31.1
when run unter Linux using "autotrace -help". Note that I experienced
similar problems when I tried to run autotrace under Windows XP SP2. On
other platforms and operating systems (like Linux), however, autotrace
has worked fine for me. If you intend to use autotrace in production,
you may therefore want to compile autotrace yourself on the specific
platform you intend to use for your work.

   default is no background color.
centerline: trace a character's centerline, rather than its outline.
color-count <unsigned>: number of colors a color bitmap is reduced to,
   it does not work on grayscale, allowed are 1..256;
default is 0, that means not color reduction is done.
corner-always-threshold <angle-in-degrees>: if the angle at a pixel is
less than this, it is considered a corner, even if it is within
`corner-surround' pixels of another corner; default is 60.
corner-surround <unsigned>: number of pixels on either side of a
   point to consider when determining if that point is a corner;
   default is 4.
corner-threshold <angle-in-degrees>: if a pixel, its predecessor(s),

   before fitting; default is 4.
input-format: PNG, TGA, PBM, PNM, PGM, PPM or BMP.
help: print this message.
line-reversion-threshold <real>: if a spline is closer to a straight
line than this, weighted by the square of the curve length, keep it a
straight line even if it is a list with curves; default is .01.
line-threshold <real>: if the spline is not more than this far away
from the straight line defined by its endpoints,
then output a straight line; default is 1.
