Hi martin,

Tried it but isn't written completely. won't load or run, some programmers said I had to do stuff , did it . didn't work. Let me know if you get it working, would you? tired of trying. using Adobe streamline now.... not modifiable but less time invested and it just works.

I sent this message directly to the email address on Autotrace's
homepage, but, since it doesn't seem to have been actively developed
for quite a while, I decided to repost it here.

As an update, I made the changes the way they made sense to me and
things seem to work fine. I'm wondering if I'm dealing with a
cut-and-paste issue (centerline processing came after the
outline/contour functionality) or whether I'm just not understanding
something.

I will eventually be submitting my code changes to the project once
it's cleaned up and ready for general consumption.

Tom

-------- ORIGINAL EMAIL ----------

Hello Martin.

I'd like to start by thanking you for developing Autotrace. I am
currently making some modifications.
I have added support for the Stentiford thinning algorithm. I don't
know if it is better, but we were already using it elsewhere, so I
figured it would be faster to have it in Autotrace. I also added
support for just dumping the Splines to a text file for easy parsing
by other programs rather than all the other formats.

I have a question about the partial outline code (pxl-outline.c)

I have a situation where this is not working.

My text diagram:

X = already in the original open "outline"
W = I want this pixel too
U = Used in another curve

---U-
---WU
--X--
--X--
-X---

In this case, an open outline is found, starting from the upper-most X
going SOUTH.
When it is finished, it tries to find another partial outline to
combine with. Here is where I get confused.

If we're going SOUTH, it tries to find partial outlines in the
following directional order:
EAST
SOUTHEAST
SOUTHWEST
end-of-list

The comment states "If the outline is open (i.e., we didn't return to
the starting pixel), search from the starting pixel in the opposite
direction and concatenate the two outlines."

How is this the "opposite direction" ?

I would assume that it would use:
NORTH
NORTHEAST
NORTHWEST

Can you help me understand this? I don't want to break anything that
I don't understand.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

It looks like Autotrace has been thrown in with a Delineate package for OS
X.
Delineate = front-end GUI for Autotrace & POTrace

Can I run OS X natively on my Intel yet? ;)

After a bunch of experimenting, I finally have AutoTrace and Delineate
working on my XP machine. I am using AutoTrace 0.31 and Delineate 0.5.

1. I already had the Java 1.5 Runtime Environment installed on my
computer, but found that Delineate required 1.41 or 1.42, so now I have
two versions of Java installed. Is there any way to get Delineate to
work with the newer version of Java so I won't need to have two versions
installed?

2. So far I have only managed to get vector output in the SVG format.
According to the AutoTrace Readme file, support for other output formats
(e.g. dxf, emf, eps, etc.) is directly integrated in AutoTrace, but when
I tried to use these formats, I get an SVG error, and in many cases
AutoTrace crashes. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install libpng
1.0.6 and/or ImageMagick 5.2.1, and if so, what is the procedure?

Thanks very much.

Hi all:

I have used autotrace online and love it, but unfortunatly the site
seems to be having some problems for the past two weeks.

I am trying to install it on my machine at home, and can not figure it
out.

The PC has Windows XP, I have down loaded the windows files, extracted
them to a folder and can not find a .exe, or install or anything that
I can get to work. (I am not a programmer type, just a user so forgive
me if this is a stupid request)

Can anyone give me a simple step by step way to install this great
program.

Thanks, and have a very happy holiday.

Hi Martin!

Have you considered of allowing Autotrace to have an
input from a pipe? Thus making following kind of
commands possible:
convert -gamma 1.5 foo.png png:- | autotrace \
--color-count=3 --output-format=pdf \
--output-file=bar.pdf -

This would be especially useful, when using Autotrace
from a shell script that would do some batch
processing on the images before they are fed to
Autotrace. Temp files are ugly.

Also some kind of Autotrace Perl API would be great to
have, like ImageMagick does with PerlMagick.

Cheers!

Give it a try and do a search on your own:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=autotrace+download
Please, try the first link in which the word "sourceforge" appears, or
try either this:
http://www.roitsystems.com/cgi-bin/autotrace/tracer.pl
or this:
http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/index.html#download
http://ftp1.sourceforge.net/autotrace/autotrace-0.31.1-w32.zip

Please, read carefully the documentation and README in the zip archive.

I suggest using delineate as a frontend:
http://delineate.sourceforge.net/

If you don't use a frontend you have to run it on the commandline
(cmd.exe).

I hope that helps.

Kind regards

do that since I haven't got a C compiler or something like
that as well -- besides PHP I don't know any other

hi Martin,

I've just downloaded the latest autotrace tarball (0.31.1) and went to
compile it.
I have ImageMagick 6.0.2 installed, but unfortunately the configure
script disables ImageMagick handlers because the comparison for the
minor number of version returns 0.

of course a lesser minor version doesn't mean a lesser version, 6.0.2
is always grater than 5.2.1.

perhaps tests on the minor version should be omitted if major version
comparison returns 1?
for now I hacked configure to make it compile Magick handlers, will
see later if it works.

thanks for your code :)

Look at

static char * read_command_line (int, char * [],
       				  at_fitting_opts_type *,
				  at_input_opts_type *,
				  at_output_opts_type *);

in main.c. After parsing command line at_output_opts_type * is passed to
an output module.

I don't know. Martin or someone will answer.

I don't have time to debug, however, if the target image is posted

Hello,

I've updated the ILDA file output module that Arjan van Vught
has posted to this list in february a little.

It now includes some optimisations to make the vector data
suitable for laser projection. Also the true color extension
to the ILDA file format is now supported.

You find a patch against current CVS at
http://www.linux-laser.org/download/autotrace/ilda-output.patch

I have tested that it compiles with gcc on Linux and VC6 on
Windows. Do you mind adding it to AutoTrace? :-)

A few questions:

Is it possible to access the command line arguments to AutoTrace
in an output module? The ILDA file output has some switches the
user should be able to change.

Is there a recommended set of libraries for the Windows build?
Which are used for the released AutoTrace binary? The executable
I've built crashes when I specify a background color using the
"-background-color 000000" option. Any idea what is causing this?

You just extract to a folder and use the EXE that is there.
Try drag and drop to it, or run from the command line with options.

Thanks for your help.

I think I'm confusing you.

I use the "Ideas" CAD package to create models. "Ideas" creates .CGM files as output (and no other format). I need to take these .CGM files and convert them into something more useful such as postscript or PDF.

I don't need to trace anything since the .CGM files that Ideas creates are already vector images. I can't find anything that will read these CGM files and convert them.

Thanks again. Sorry to bug you.

Hi Martin

I know nothing about coding so this may be a problem with deliniate
rather than autotrace (ie not ur problem!) but the windows version of
Deliniate/Autotrace has the follwoing bug:

Due to the location of my Java install being "C:\Program
Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04" the program will not execute as the
deliniate.bat only reads the path up until the space between "Program"
and "Files". I Copied the Java folder to another location without a
space in the path and it worked, for a while, but now i'm getting
nothing. System processes indicate that javaw.exe is running, but i get
no GUI.

Any ideas?

(PS when it was working it was fantastic!)

Hi all,

during the developement of AutoTrace I was often asked what do do with
noisy pictures. Till know I was not able to develope a really good
denoising tool myself. Some time ago I found a tool called
PictureCooler. Currently it's usage is free. After extensively testing
I found that it is better than other commercially available tools such
as Noiseware or Noise Ninja. Here you find it:

LaserBoy is an OpenSourse Linux laser art application and programming
API. What it does is not as important of a question as how it does
it. It is a set of C++ objects representing every hierarchical aspect
of what laser vector art is according to the ILDA file standard,
including multiple palettes.

A set of scalar objects are defined with a full compliment of
overloaded arithmetic operators. Container objects are all based upon
inherited STL vector templates. All of this is packaged into a single
application-ready-object, with a rich cache of functions, capable of
displaying itself at any resolution, any angle of rotation, w/wo
points enhanced, w/wo blanking, and w/wo a very unique double cursor
that allows sections of points to be selected and modified.

Very soon, it will be re-released. There are too many new features in
this release to write about.

In order to use this code you need a Linux box.
The kernel must be built to support a video card as a frame buffer
device. You must be root, have the code, and be able to type "make".
This code is designed to turn your Linux box into a display server.
The laserboy application is run from a shell on another machine.

LaserBoy is free and will always be free.

These are pictures of a recent purchase. I got this on January 17th.
It's pretty crusty in the photos. I took them as soon as I got it
home. I cleaned it up nicely and it works very well!
Thanks Rob! You are the man.

Indeed there is a "extern C" around the structure definitions in autotrace.h
and it is placed into the code when preprocessor "__cplusplus" is defined.

Supposedly, I've done that, but I need to confirm that it is actually set.

These are Microsoft specific, and do not work on the GNU compilers where

I suspect that the real problem is a missing

extern "C" {

<Autotrace headers go here>

}

in the C++ code?
This switches off name mangling for references to the appropriate headers and
may also have other more subtle effects.

Regards, Dan.
