Hi Kevin -- check out your web site at www.avsa.org. One of the
pages there has a place to click for a free copy of the AV magazine,
and also a place for you to sign up for membership which is the same
as getting the magazine every 2 months. Definitely worth every
cent. I think it is $18.00 now. Will send you a link of page.
Good luck!

Can anyone tell me what is going on with the grow light situation?
I have heard there are new tubes that will not fix/work in the older
plant stands?

Also, let's talk about what type of tubes people growing under lights
have been
using and their experiences.

Good morning, Lynda,

I would just like to thank you for starting the Africanvioletconnectionn! I
am also a 3 year member of Gesneriphiles, and love it. But I must say I
haven't liked some of the stuff that has been happening there, concerning
your list. I just use the delete key and keep on going to get to the
worthwhile postings. You have my respect for "enduring" and now having this
list up and running, successfully. I also grow a few other gesneriads, so
will stay on the Gesneriphile list too, but will probably enjoy the AV one
best.

Keep up the good work!

Subject: avconnection Violet Variables
borck@...
Send Email Send Email

Happy Father's Day,

This article was written and published in the "African Violet Magazine" a
few years ago. Seeing so many growers want information about how to grow I
think this may be helpful.

                Variables
   by Byron Borck

I have been growing African violets since 1988, and reading AVM since 1990.
Starting with four plants, my collection has grown to around 400,
including some of my own hybrids. Along my growing path I joined a local
club and am currently serving a third successive term as president. I am
continually lear
ning more about violets through research and experimentation.

A year ago I spoke at our monthly club meeting on "The Culture and Care of
African Violets for the Home Hobbiest". I read as many articles and books
that I could find to prepare for the meeting. This research led me to an
amazing conclusion. Every grower grows violets just a little differently
from the next person. What works for one grower may not work for someone
else.

Why, I pondered, isn't there one perfect way of growing? The answer seems
simple, however the solution is complex. Just as no two violet plants
are completely identical, so no two growing environments are completely
identical. Even two neighboring houses will have different environments.

Each person who grows violets works with a different group of variables.
Some variables are easy to control and some are difficult. I am not
surprised to see a variance in the same violet cultivar; such as blossom
color, color of foliage, size, etc; when grown by two different growers. A
difference in the variables will effect growth and performance.

Let's look at the elements needed to successfully grow violets; and
consider the variables.

Light - Natural light: has seasonal changes
                                 which exposure
Artificial: how many hours per day; 10-16 hours
type of light fixture; reflective hood
                                         spacing of bulbs: 2, 3, 5 10, ?
inches apart
type of bulb: cool, warm, Grow Lux, WS Grow Lux,
Power Twist
how long the bulbs have been used
how close the bulbs are to the plants

Pots- clay or plastic
                 standard or azalea
                 self watering- Moist Rite, Oyama
decorative, no holes in bottom of pot

Soil- commercial mix or home formula
do you add to commercial mix: perlite, vermiculite, bone
meal, blood meal, other
how one packs soil in the pot
         how often one repots

Watering- bottled: spring or distilled
city tap: mineral content will vary from well to
well; some cities add chlorine
home well- mineral content will vary from time to time
                         top watering
                         bottom watering
                         wick
                         capillary matting
on a schedule every 7 days, when plant show signs
of limpness, when soil is dry to touch

Fertilizing- brand of: Rapid Gro, Peters, Miracle Grow, Volkmanns,
                                 Optimara, other
                         fertilizer formula: 15-30-15, 5-50-17, 20-20-20, other
         alternate: different fertilizers, different formulas
                         constant feed or monthly
how much: 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, teaspoons per gallon
         do you foliar feed
any other additives: Superthrive(how many drops per
gallon), Maxi-Crop (how much)
do you leach soil from time to time

Grooming- leaves clean and washed
                         spent blossoms removed
                         disbudding for more bloom
                         growing area clean

Humidity- violets like 40-60 percent
                         seasonal changes
                 regional changees
do you mist when low, use fans when high

Placement- where plants are grown in a room
                 proximity to other violets

Temperature- regional changes
         seasonal changes
variance from night time low to day time high

I am sure there are many more variables than the ones I have mentioned
above.

Experimenting with the variables can be rewarding. An understanding of
how these variables work together enables the grower to grow a better
plant. Find what works for you. If you are growing plants to your
satisfaction; you have the correct combination of variables for your
environment.

I would be very interested in hearing from other parts of the country how
these variables work for you.

Happy Growing,
BYRON

Thanks, Lynda, for having the idea of starting this list and then seeing
it come to pass! I think all of the unpleasant occurrences will pass.
Just hang in there! I have neglected my violets also for different
reasons, I'm going to work in the morning!

Hi Michelle and AVConnection friends -

I'm generally a quiet "list lurker" but reading your note about running out of
wicking containers made me want to pass along a great idea one of my AV club
members shared last week.

She takes clear plastic water or soda bottles (1 L or 2 L or whatever), cuts
the bottom off the bottle with knife or scissors (leaving a height of approx.
5" on the bottom half if it is a 2 L bottle) then takes a lighter (I use an
"Aim and Flame" - much easier to use) and carefully and lightly runs the
flame around the inside cut rim of the bottom container. The heat causes the
rim to gently "fold in" (sort of an "innie" rolled rin) and - voila! - you
have a neat wicking container. It's sturdy, stable, see-through and - best of
all - no messing around sticking wicks in a little hole (for years I used deli
containers with holes cut in the lids). When the reservoir gets icky-looking,
throw it away and create another, as there's usually no lack of soda/water
bottles. I made a lot of little wicking containers for semi-minis using 16 oz
clear water bottles and it works like a charm!

Anyway, I thought it was a neat idea and worth sharing with all. By the way,
I think this is going to be a super list and Lynda has done a yeoman's job
keeping it going, especially with all the initial glitches. Hopefully, they
are all resolved (and I, for one, would like to believe that it was accidental
- not deliberate - that this new list kept getting re-subscribed to
gesneriphiles) and we can carry on with violeting!

Best regards -- Peg Eaton in Boston (where we've awaked to another foggy
morning!)

I explained that no one was intentionally signing him up, just some

There was one other comment from someone, but this was yesterday, I
believe....and lately I've been pretty quick with the delete button,
because I get tired of angry messages back and forth. I'm sorry I
deleted those messages without thinking.
I will forward anything peculiar to you from hense forth if it will help.
I'd like to see this list up, running and with nothing untoward

It's kind of funny, but just a couple of weeks ago I was wishing, as I
sat and read the Orchid Digest and the Begonia List, that there was one
for mostly AV's.

Keep up the good work, you're a brave soul.

GETTING READY FOR SHOW from "The Council News"
by Byron Borck

Faster Growing

Many people have asked how I grow a large plant from a leaf in a short
period of time. After talking to many admired growers and reading
numerous articles on propagation and growing, I have found the following
method works very well for me. It takes about 1 year from a leaf to a
large standard.

When a leaf order arrives I wash each leaf carefully in warm water and then
plant them in a 1:1:1 mixture of potting soil, perlite, and vermiculite.
Each leaf is then watered well with a diluted fertilizer mixture. The
planted leaves are placed in a tray covered with a clear plastic lid.
This tray I place on a top shelf of a light stand. ( I have found the
extra warmth on a top shelf shortens the time waiting for the plant lets.
)

Once the plantlets start pushing through the potting mix, I cut the top
half of the mother leaf off. When the plantlets have leaves about the
size of a dime it is time to separate them into their own pots. Usually I
will plant the three biggest and throw the rest away. It doesn't take long
to recognize which of the three grows with the best symmetry. This plant
becomes my prospective show plant and the other two become sale plants.

The show plant is watched carefully each week. Immature, off size, or
damaged leaves are removed. This helps the plant grow symmetrically.

When the plant starts to bloom the first time I check the plant's
description to make sure it is blooming true. Now comes the hard part.
All the blossoms are removed and the plant now starts growing for show day.

Each time I water, I try to turn my plants to promote even growth. The
plant stays disbudded so all the plant's energy goes into growing. Keeping
the plant disbudded helps make the leaves grow larger and over lap each
other.

When the plant's diameter becomes three times that of the pot's diameter,
it is time to repot to the next size pot. I have found if I wait and not
pot on time, the plant gets odd sized leaves or it slows down its growth.

To all the very basic elements of violet culture I add the word
consistency. The plants we all admire at the shows are a labor of love.
Growing the perfect show plant is a matter of applying your knowledge of
violet culture perpetually.

Hi Everyone,

I am sending this message to let everyone know that I have requested
findmail.com to cancel the first African Violet mail group. As I am
sure you know by now I have started a new mail group African Violet
Connection.

I know that the e-mail address reads "avconnectionn (not 2 n's). I have
gone into the configuration and set up process several times and changed
it to no avail. Compared to the problems last weekend (Maalox and Tagament)
this is a mint candy problem!

I hope everyone is enjoying the mail group. Here is South Texas it is
over 100 degrees, hot, humid and extremely dry. There are several brush
fires out of control in the city as I write this message at 6:20 pm
on Saturday evening.

I have decided to take an extra day off from work over the July 4th
weekend to dedicate a day to repotting. In mid-March I "put down"
about 20 leaves of new varities I obained from the Sanders in San Antonio
TX. They live about a half hour from me. What a delight to visit with
them. Also, I have not repotted for over 4 months and my semi-mini plants are
crying out for attention, ditto a few standards.

I have started turning on the plants in the plant room about 5 am, so I
can have them go out earlier. This helps to keep the plant room cooler
during the hottest time of the day.

Is anyone planning to go the Lone Star Convention in Austin in the fall?
How about the AVSA Convention in Houston next year? It would be nice
if this group could get together over lunch, coffee, whatever to meet
at either or both conventions. Your thoughts?

Hope you are having a pleasant weekend. Enjoy the message board.

Lynda Welchel

PS Good growing to all.

Re. Moon Signs: "The Dixie News" is published 4 times a year and
contains the moon sign information on an on-going basis. It is
obviously a Southern violet association including 13 states and is
affiliated with the AVSA. Membership is $12.00/year and includes
the publication, and address to join is: Porter Temple, 6221 Temple
Road, Franklin TN 37069-7138. No I don't ever remember to plant by
the right signs, but another lady in our club does and her violets
are beautiful.

I am grateful to whomever brought up growing, (planting) by the
sign of the moon.
I grew up on a farm and my father told me about the moon signs and
how they effected growth etc. I pooh poopd it. He then showed me. He
took two boards and laid them down on the grass one at a time. The
first one he put down in the moon sign that encouraged upward growth.
He waited for the sign for downward growth and put the other down. He
told me that the one he put down for upward growth - the grass would
grow out from under it. The one for downward growth, - the grass
would die under it. IT HAPPENED! I had forgotten all about that until
someone mentioned it and then I remembered. I also went to the AF
magazine and the moon signs are shown in the last issue that I have.
We know that the tides are caused by the moons attraction and they
can predict the height of the tide in a specific location.
My background is in engineering - science. I am a believer in
growing by the signs of the moon. I for one am going to try it by
putting down leaves in the proper moon sign. By the way, the AVM
also tells how the signs affect it.

  Good Growing

Bernie

Enjoyed your posting regarding growing large AVs.

Tried to respond directly to you and couldn't get through so I thought I
would send it via avconnection.

Seems your server couldn't be found so would check with ISP.

Good luck and good growing,

Many years ago the moon sign calendar was printed in GSN Magazine. I used it
and had luck with planting in the correct sign. As sometimes things happen, I
would plant in a sign which was not barren and not much happened.

I believe it has also been published in the AV Magazine.

When this great information was not longer available, I didn't try to learn
how to read signs and devise a calendar.

Would the Farmer's Almanac be beneficial? Farmers really believe in planting
by the moon and slaughtering animals by signs.

If someone doesn't have the information about this planting, perhaps several
of us could research the net and publications.

I don't recall about the bugs. But that sounds interesting.

SHOWING and GROWING Section of "The Council News"
April 1998 by Byron Borck

                                              Big Enough

"My plants never get that big, what am I doing wrong?" "I never get that
many blossoms." "My violets never look like that!" These comments are
made quite often by the public as well as violet growers when viewing a
display of well grown violets. I've even made these comments myself over
the years.

So, what am I doing wrong and why don't my plants look like the ones I saw?
Maybe nothing. Let's explore those opening comments.

Growing a plant to a large size is not as difficult as it seems, nor does
it take years. (See "Faster Growing", TCN July 97) It is helpful to know
if the variety being grown is suppose to get big. Some hybridizers
specialize in plants that stay small enough to grow on a window sill, or
even smaller as miniatures; so it is helpful to know as much as you can
about the hybridizer goal and the variety. A good place to start checking
is in the Master Variety List. This list will tell if the variety grows
large or if it is a normal size standard, small standard, semiminiature,
etc.

Once you have obtained a large growing variety then it is up to you to
apply good cultural practices so the plant will grow to its full potential.
Keeping the plant disbudded will send the plant's energy into growing
larger and symmetrical.

Stunting or dwarfing a plant can easily happen. Plants that are kept in a
cold growing environment will grow slower and have smaller leaves. Keeping
a plant in a small pot or not potting to a larger pot on time will limit
the size of a plant. Not keeping the soil evenly moist will also result in
smaller plants.

The number of blossoms a plant has in bloom is determined by heredity and
once again cultural conditions. Many of the older varieties do not seem to
produce the large number of blooms that the new varieties do. Keeping a
plant disbudded for six months or even longer will increase the number of
blossom stems which increases blossom count.
If you are looking for varieties that have lots of blossoms I would check
the hybridizer's description and find the "heavy blooming" ones.

To Grow a Large Violet:

Start with a large growing variety
Keep it disbudded
Remove suckers when forming
Remove immature, distorted, or damages leaves
Pot up when needed
Support leaves with a plant ring
Keep leaves clean by washing plant
Give plant room to grow

Keep in mind that cultural conditions and the environment that plants grow
in will effect how violets grow and how they look. Soil, water, light,
temperature, fertilizer etc. all contribute to blossom and leaf color.

Would suggest patience to others and support for you during this time.

Good luck and good growing.
