It does sound like rot! You need to un-pot this AV, remove all dark colored roots & any dark colored neck/trunk (stem). Healthy roots are white & firm/plump....

Mary, I would use the Fish Emulsion also. You can foliar feed, it will smell, but it is not that bad and it does not last long. I would not use the VF-11....
