I follow the directions on the container for use. Neem oil is a main
ingredient in several newer, less toxic pesticides. When I dip the plant in the
solution, I make sure the solution is the pesticide in warm water. I pat the
plant dry with Bounty towels because they are soft and absorbant and put the
plant
out of direct light and away from drafts until it is completely dry.

Hi Lynn!

How was the show? Anything interesting? I woke up on Saturday going,
bummed out because I am up here in Portland. Although I will be able
to go to the Seattle show, I don't think we will have time to visit
the Space Needle as my husband would like to attend something else.
But I a lucky I can still go to the AV show there.

Hope to see you next year!

In Members, then Dale's photo album, see 'Heinz's Harbour Lights' and 'Tea for
Two'
(also Heinz's hybrid). Tea for Two's photo doesn't do it justice. It's a
dusty pink with a
ruffled geneva edge.

This is my very, very first Best in Show for an African Violet. 'Heinz's
Harbour Lights':
Variegated foliage, blue-lavender flowers with green edges and puff fantasy. I
wanted to grow it well for him and get a blue ribbon. I was told there were
around 160
total entries in the show being held at a large shopping mall. While the judges
were
judging, I went to lunch with family and friends and upon returning from lunch I
looked in
the direction of where the entry was placed to see if the judges had given it a
blue
ribbon. All I saw was an empty space. When I lived in California we had some
problems in shopping mall shows with plants being damaged or stolen, so I turned
to
one of the members and said, "My entry is missing, do you know what happened to
it?"
She said, "Don't you know?" I replied, "Know what?" She pointed behind me.
There
on the Winners' table was my entry as Best in Show. I burst into tears!

Leaves will find their way into the AVSA live auction.

Hi folks,

I entered three of my little trailers (not mature plants) into a local (Stuart, FL) flower show sponsored by the local garden club of which I am becoming a member.  They were Rob's Humpty Doo, Rob's Lilli Pilli, and Tensie's Trail.  There were no other trailing violets, one standard violet (gorgeous) and one mini non-trailer.  I hoped to maybe get an honorable mention, but when I went to the show the next day, I had three firsts!  (A "beefsteak" begonia I entered won a 2nd in another class.)

Can someone please tell me how there can be three firsts?  The plants looked great, were blooming nicely, and believe me, I'm not complaining.

This was very motivational and makes me want to submit something to a "real" African Violet show where I would be hoping for an honorable mention, maybe.

Thanks.

Joanne--

You could have three blue ribbons because AVSA judging is merit, not
competitive, judging. That means each entry or exhibit is judged on its own
merit. In competitive judging, a single first, second, and third place are
usually awarded. Honorable mention may be awarded, too.

Perhaps this Garden Club also uses a type of "Merit Judging".  This is when the plant is judged against a scale of points.  Congratulations, by the way!

You remind me of my first show, where I was SO disappointed because I had some yellow ribbons.  Turns out the blue was the merit judging of the plant which each plant got (except for a few reds) - but then the yellow was the Best in Class - which meant the best of the blues in that particular class (such as standard trailers, or green leaved pink miniatures, etc).  And then after the best in each class is chosen, those are evaluated for things like Best in Show, Best Standard, Best Mini, etc. etc. etc.  So the merit judging is great - and also leads into a bit of competitiveness.  I have only entered African violet shows so can't speak of the garden club shows; you now have more experience in that than I do!!

Congratulations on your First Place wins!!!!

Thanks for asking about our show! I'm sorry you had to miss it but I'm sure you're going to have a wonderful time at the Seattle show on April 23.

Our Capital City AVS group had a fun time sharing our hobby with our guests. The show had about 100 hort and 25 design exhibits, and the quality was such that the show earned a Blue Rosette. Everyone worked very hard and earning the rosette made it all worthwhile.

We had about 1200-1400 sale plants available. The show opened at 2:00, guests were waiting outside with boxes in hand, and within two hours, we had fewer than 400 plants left. When the show closed on Sunday, we took only about 200 plants back, had sold all the soil, and most of the other supplies. The enthusiasm was incredible! When you go to Seattle, you might try to be there a little early, just in case they have a similar situation!

What wonderfully determined people African violet lovers are! The "cousins" sold just as well ~ the streps, episcias, chiritas, and sinningias were nearly all gone within the first hours, too!

Have a great time in Seattle! I can't wait to hear what you find to add to your collection! I'm hoping to make it to the AGGS convention in Portland in July. Will you possibly be able to attend that show?

Jeanne

Hi Dale,
Happy, Happy, Happy  for you!!  I know you are thrilled. Both plants are beautiful.
I especially like the Harbor Lights.

In Members, then Dale's photo album, see 'Heinz's Harbour Lights' and 'Tea for Two'
(also Heinz's hybrid).   Tea for Two's photo doesn't do it justice.  It's a dusty pink with a
ruffled geneva edge.

This is my very, very first Best in Show for an African Violet.   'Heinz's Harbour Lights':
Variegated foliage, blue-lavender flowers with green edges and puff fantasy.  I
wanted to grow it well for him and get a blue ribbon.  I was told there were around 160
total entries in the show being held at a large shopping mall. While the judges were
judging, I went to lunch with family and friends and upon returning from lunch I looked in
the direction of where the entry was placed to see if the judges had given it a blue
ribbon.  All I saw was an empty space.  When I lived in California we had some
problems in shopping mall shows with plants being damaged or stolen, so I turned to
one of the members and said, "My entry is missing, do you know what happened to it?"
She said, "Don't you know?"  I replied, "Know what?"  She pointed behind me.  There
on the Winners' table was my entry as Best in Show.  I burst into tears!

Leaves will find their way into the AVSA live auction.

Dale in Illinois

Dale,
How nice to see so many violet growers congratulating you on growing such
marvellous plants.
I, too, appreciate how well you have grown my hybrids and I thank you for
your effort. Tell the truth, I'm also excited.

Heinz

Joanne--

The American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society (AGGS) uses competitive
judging. Here in Colorado and probably most other states, the State and
local County fairs are judged using Cooperative Extension rules, which is
competitive judging. Having been the Awards chairman for both the local AV
Council and AGGS club, it is easier to estimate accurately the number of
ribbons needed for a competitively judged show!
