Hello,

I have just received babies of some of the Pittman Jolly series that
are not in First Class. The friend that gave them to me does not have
the descriptions.

I was hoping someone might be able to help.

They are: Jolly Charm, Jolly Dream, Jolly Valentine, Jolly Waltz, and
I also got My Thumb Print from Pittman.

Anybody know these?

Thanks,
Roxanne, NC.

Jackie, Why don't you try something like  20-20-20 ?  Have these plants ever grown flat for
you ? Some varieties just reach, no matter what.

I just set up my african violets on wick watering.  They are all doing great.  I have a question about it.  I was reading about this, and came across this statement.  It said that when the reservoir went dry, to let the plant dry slightly before refilling the reservoir.  If necessary, water thru the top to rewet the wick again.  I know it will not hurt the plant to slighty dry, but is this a really necessary step?  Or is it okay to just always have water in the reservoir?

Peggy,
I have been growing Violets for over 10 years and sometimes the reservoirs will go dry the day or so before I refill them but never make a habit of letting them stay dry for any extended time.  I have won many awards over the years so have decided the way that I do mine with the kind of soil that I use is doing well.  Different growers use different methods and different soils and are successful. It is a matter of  just what works best for each person in their growing conditions, Good Luck.

Hi Peggy,

Because of the way I "wick water" a dry plant is very seldom a problem.  But, of course, if the reservoir goes dry............   However, on the occasions it has happened, if the plant or wick is dry, I will place it with the wick in a saucer or water for about 1/2 hour just to get everything nice and moist again.  Then simply refill the reservoir, place the plant and life goes on.

Peggy, like Barb I don't let my violets "dry" before filling the reservoir but do water through the plant if it is DRY and wick is DRY.

I am kind of a "routine nut" and date each shelf with a note whenever I have filled those reservoirs---which for my purpose seems best every 10 days. I always empty whatever is left and use fresh fertilized water each time.

Are you by any chance a member of any Illinois group or state AV?

First of all, it's best not to let the reservoir and the plant go completely dry before refilling it!
However, it happens to the best of us!
But there is no need to panic because it's easily fixed. You can just refill the reservoir over the lid so that the bottom of the plant with the dry wick sits in the water. If the soil is very dry also, it's best to set the pot in a small bowl or an empty reservoir with perhaps a 1/2" of water for a couple of hours or over night, then place is back on the filled reservoir.
Incase of the minis/semiminis which I grow in jelly jars, I can  fill the jar to a heights that the bottom of the pot sits in approx 1/4" of the water which is enough to get the suction going again.
And yes, you can do all of this with fertilizer in the water!

Jackie,

Leaves stretch to find more light. Maybe your bulbs need to be
changed or maybe you could place them in a better lighted position.

For the mostpart I refill the containers before they go dry. This
means the plants are always damp and I believe it is better to let
them dry out just a bit sometimes. I use a very dry soil, 1-1-1
plus an extra helping of perlite.

Thank you all for your replys regarding my question on wick watering.  So far I haven't let the reservoirs go dry.  I have kept them filled.  It is so nice to have you all here to answer questions for a new person.

Jackie - So far I haven't joined any Illinois Societies.  I did join the National Society.  the closest clubs in Illinois are at least an hour and a half drive one way to the meetings.  I am not able right now to commit to that.  Peoria's club is no longer in existence. I may be joining the state society.

Must have unusual luck as I've run into a few varieties that stretch
when there is too much light to their liking. In those case that was
discovered by putting them closer to the light....the leaves became even
straighter up.

Susan, I'm going to experiment a little. Change a tube here and there--and watch the plants that "reach" to see if there is a difference. It's just not something I have had to deal with in the many years I've been growing violets.

Greetings violet people,

Has anyone found a fertilizer without Urea and that is a balanced, 20-
20-20, 10-10-10, or something close to that? Also, a Urea free, high
nitrogen like Rapid-Gro used to be, 30-10-10 or something close to that?

Thanks.

Hi Margorie and all,
Up until now, this has not been a great health year for me, so thanks for
getting my message out :-). The Best Variety Lists are due on July 31! You
have the entire month. But still hurry!!
For those who have been here these past years...and for all new to the
AVC, you are invited to send me a list of your 25 favorite African Violets,
and I put together the Best Variety List to be published in the
November/December African Violet Magazine. This forms the base of the AVSA's
Honor Roll of Violets. Simple rules:
For an individual or club, send the list of up to 25 favorites to the
address below. When you do a club PLEASE list all votes for each plant.
Every member gets 25 votes. So the number of violets and the number of total
votes can be very large, GOOD!! However, large or small each list is very
important and when we reach the end, everyone has a great list of what is
growing and blooming around the world. It's fun to do, and it is so helpful
to other growers. We learn of old favorites and new introductions.
So, flood my mailbox.
Your ol' listmaker,
Floyd Lawson

I have a question for the experts...  I keep seeing Ness' Ruffled Skies.  My FC2 just says Ruffled Skies and it was hybridized by Gordon Boone and is listed as Stork/Boone.  These plants look and grow identical???  There is no listing for a Ness' Ruffled Skies.

Copied from FC2 and pasted here...
Ruffled Skies (7717) 06/15/1992 (Stork/Boone) Double medium blue star/white ruffled edge. Dark green, quilted. Standard
For my records, I'd like to know what is correct.
