Hello group,
My name is Jim and I live in Ohio. I have been a member of this group for
several years but my email address was changed so I had to reapply. I
presently have about 60 violets and am a member of the AVSA. I have some
questions that I will probably post tomorrow.
Thanks.

PS I just got my latest issue of the AVSA magazine and like the new size.

Welcome (back?) Jim! I too think I like the new format of the AVSA magazine;
little easier to carry around. Look forward to your questions and the answers,
always love learning new things, being reminded of things I learned but haven't
had to use yet (and therefore probably forgot!), etc., etc., even if I
personnally can't help answer a question in 50! <g> Well, I may have hints to
share for keeping cats out of your shelves when you don't have a separate
room/greenhouse for your plants, but there's trade-offs...

And don't ya' just *hate* having to change e-mail addresses? It's a real
headache! lol

I decided to do a introductory science project/gift project for an after school
care group. They gave me the 4-5th grade girls. They expressed wanting to know
about violets. There were 2-3 of the 8 who were interested, but think once we
put down leaves they might really get excited. They loved the pictures in the
AVSA magazine and wanted to know what else we were doing today. Not much but
introduction. That was enough with a short attention span. LOL

My plan is to put down enough leaves for the over 75 students who come there so
they will have a small plant for Mother's Day. Better start counting my plants
and see what I can put down.

It should be exciting and who knows where this will lead us.

Good morning Jim,

Question one:
It sounds like these babies are from variegated leaves that you have put down. Many of them come up white/cream/pink and eventually turn green as they age. You can use a fertilizer that is a bit higher in nitrogen, or spray with fish emulsion to help them along. Never try to separate these babies while they are over 50% white, or they will probably die off  as they cannot live on their own without enough chlorophyll in the leaves.

Question two:
I would drench the soil with soapy water made from Murphy's Oil Soap or dish soap. The larval stages of thrips live in the soil, and that's where your next crop will be coming from. Thrips are the hardest "bug" for me to control.

You might want to have them keep a simple notebook with the progress of the plants and also take pictures to put in the notebook. Years ago in the AVSA magazine a child used African violets as a science fair project. I think it was different fertilizers, maybe there’s some way to look it up for ideas to use with children.

Oh my golly! I stumbled on my old 2008 AV Pictures, from before my "root rot"
kill off! Been looking for these pictures for, forever, it seems like! I'll
toss some up on my photobucket site, have pictures of Scheherazade, a few
others, not currently in FC2 (I think), tho' my camera then wasn't so good...
Will confine to blooms/flowering plants, mostly... <g> Oh, wow! Maybe I just
hid them because I was so sad about losing them all...

Cara,

Nice that you found your photos!  It is great to be able to look back and enjoy your plants when they were looking good.  I didn't see a link to your photobucket site.  Did I miss it?

One of my problems with violet photos is that I take a lot, make a list, then, never get around to labeling the photos.  Later, I wonder what they are!

I went to my after school group and it had grown from 8 to 12. I had several
boys this time. I took Kristi's Spunk and Rebel's Crested Robin as they had
lots of leaves that could be taken to put down.
Every one of them chose Kristi's Spunk. We have 12 leaves down and I put down
72 on Monday for the rest of the kids at the after school care program.

They were so excited. I cut the leaves and gave each a cup that they put soil
in. I watered the soil and they put their leaf down. I have them in a plastic
container at the school under adult supervision so they can keep an eye on them
until they get mouse ears.

They want me to come back next week, but not sure what we would do. They loved
the hands on and were so excited it was hard keeping them all sitting and not
mauling the plants. They loved feeling the leaves and looking at the blooms. It
was really nice to see so much enthusiasm.

Anyone got any ideas on what we could do for future classes? I don't have to go
back weekly, but if I can find something for them to do it would be fun for a
couple of weeks. I only have about 30-40 mins with them.

you asked about other activities to do while waiting for mouse ears.  How about taking some of the wonderful stuff you can find on line, or in the AVSA archives and teaching them the difference in leaves, petal shape, even coloring.  You could do one each week.  And even explain during the class what is happening underneath the dirt, like tiny roots will be searching for holes in the soil to grow through... and so forth.  keep us posted, this is fun!  bonita

Some ideas,

- have them search the web for pictures of violets and make scrapbooks
- find or create an AV crossword puzzle
- paint some containers to use for pots when "babies" start coming
- show them on a world map AV's come from - draw lines and measure miles to where you are
- create a poem or song about the friendship plant

have fun!

I went to my after school group and it had grown from 8 to 12. I had several boys this time. I took Kristi's Spunk and Rebel's Crested Robin as they had lots of leaves that could be taken to put down.
Every one of them chose Kristi's Spunk. We have 12 leaves down and I put down 72 on Monday for the rest of the kids at the after school care program.

They were so excited. I cut the leaves and gave each a cup that they put soil in. I watered the soil and they put their leaf down. I have them in a plastic container at the school under adult supervision so they can keep an eye on them until they get mouse ears.

They want me to come back next week, but not sure what we would do. They loved the hands on and were so excited it was hard keeping them all sitting and not mauling the plants. They loved feeling the leaves and looking at the blooms. It was really nice to see so much enthusiasm.

Anyone got any ideas on what we could do for future classes? I don't have to go back weekly, but if I can find something for them to do it would be fun for a couple of weeks. I only have about 30-40 mins with them.

A few years ago I attended a show and sale in Denton,Tx, and am under the impresson
this is a yearly event ! Can anyone confirm this for me, as well as give me date and location of this years show ! I haven't subscribed to AV magazine in a couple of years so would appreciate any info. on that or any other shows in the dallas -ft.worth area coming up this year. I live in that area but do not drive much, so only attend shows close by.

Betty, I am editor of the Texas LSAVC Newsletter and am compiling that information right now.  Trying to get all Texas clubs in the next issue of our newsletter, which should be out in a couple of weeks.  We have a website also, http://www.lsavc.org and I will ask that the information also be posted there.  I can send you a courtesy copy of our newsletter ---- IF I can remember that long.  Please feel free to remind me by next weekend if you have not heard from me.

And yes -- there will be a spring show in Denton, in Dallas, in Fort Worth, in Wichita Falls, in Austin, in San Antonio, and probably a few others scattered around.

Great to hear from you!!
