Hi Betty,

Thank you for responding to my question on the lights.

Although I know many people use them, I am trying to get away from the shop
light setup and am ready to buy a commercial plant stand. I haven't been
entirely happy with my shop light setup.

Right now I am planning to ask the difference between these two (other than tray
size)

http://growerssolution.com/page/GS/PROD/fullsize/g3a

http://www.buyplantlights.com/full-size-light-cart-b3b.html

http://www.buyplantlights.com/full-size-light-cart-g3a.html

At least I have chosen, but not bought, T-8 fixtures/bulbs. The stand will be a
beginning.

I like to grow some in my windows although some simply never do well there and,
at this time of year, very few do. Candy Fountain is the "postal service" of
african violets since nothing seems to stop it from blooming. Others just sit
there and shiver.

Mea culpa! I, too, peeked at your newsletter and enjoyed it very much. I don't
know why I've resisted Bumble's Orchard Magnet all this time but perhaps if it's
when I order, I need to try that one, although Jolly Jubilee looked quite nice
too! I'm trying to keep the numbers down, but if if ever warms up I will be
looking for a replacement for my Rosie Ruffles which I lost a couple of years
ago.

Thank you, Helen, for the enjoyment :) And thanks again, Betty, for your kind
post.

Hi Diana,
From what I can see, besides the width of the stands and hence the different trays, the only difference is the color. On both stands only the lights are adjustable, not the shelf height.  They are both lightweight. I have that type of plant stand at home, butI also have a couple stands that are a mixture of waht Betty described.
One other option depending on what you are wanting--cost, appearance etc, is to maybe use a wire rack stand, but see if the light fixtures you chose can be affixed to the stand by chains vs the bolt. That might cut down on the cost a bit. The fixtures can be the most expensive part of the stand.
IGS at www.indoorgardensupplies.com has the option of using chains or the bolt system. Good Luck

Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the information. Do you think these stands are too lightweight? I
know the FloraCarts are heavier but certainly cost a lot more too.

These look fine. I already have the heavy duty shelving that came from Sam's
Club a few years back but it is heavy and if there were any casters, they
weren't installed. This should be more flexible if I want to move it.

I'm not certain how important the trays are here. I already have quite a few
perma-nest trays so is there any reason I can't arrange my own long ones under
the light with wider shelves? Adjustable shelves would be awesome but the price
for them seems to be a little too awesome :)

I will check out the lights at IGS. I am not locked into any special place and
the shipping costs will factor heavily. Choosing my own light fixtures is
something that is very important and I see that are quite expensive.

I was surprised to see so many stands that used 24" tubes since they are so
expensive. I do have 2 stands that use them but that's because I like to have
one for minis and I inherited the other stand.

Thanks again - I need to get on this or I'll be jiggling the cord on an old
light again to start some petunias and things.

Hello all,
Agnetha from Sweden here,
My guess is most of you have seen or even grown one of his beautiful yellow
african violets from the Ajohn's series – and

Much to my great regret I have to inform you all that mr Arne Johansson – mr
Ajohn's – died peacefully at his home the Monday before last.
I feel I lost a dear, dear friend and a very lovely mental boarding wall to try
new hybridizing thoughts up against.
We all lost someone whom with skill and knowledge was leading us into new,
unseen lovely AV hybrids.
Our thoughts are with his family. May there be meadows and meadows filled with
African Violets where you are, Arne!
From fellow hybridizers Agnetha WW and Lena A in Sweden.
Sorry for cross posting

Good afternoon all,

I have been growing AV's since about 2 1/2 years now en enjoy it
tremendously. I've only had 2 or 3 that didn't like the way I cared
for them, other than those they all are doing great.

We are in the happy circumstance that in the winter we can leave
Vermont and stay in Florida. So far I have traveled with all my av's
in our small class B motorhome. But I keep having baby plants, mostly
of the standard or large plants. And traveling space is so limited. I
have decided to get rid of most of my large plants and perhaps the
standards as well.

However, I have never shipped any plants myself. That is the reason I
am wondering if there are av enthousiasts <sp?> in Vermont that are
interested in some of my plants because perhaps I can personally hand
them over somehow.

I am now more focussing on the miniatures and semi miniatures, purely
out of space limitations. And perhaps we can trade some plants?

I sure hope this message is permitted.

Kind regards,
Milli.

The "package deal" and early bird discount for registering for the Raleigh, N.C.
AVSA convention is February 25th. I'm getting mine in the mail today because
we're going to get 9 inches of snow starting this afternoon, and I live out in
the boondocks of Illinois, so travel will be a challenge this coming week.

One of the new changes beginning with the Jan/Feb 2010 AV Magazine is that the
convention information isn't in there. This means going to the
http://www.avsa.org web site. With AVSA one has to fill out forms and snail
mail them as there is no on-line process. I found it was easier if I printed
out the registration form and then spent time scrolling up and down deciding
which of the 7 tours, 8 meals and 10 presentations to attend. You need to
make the hotel reservation and write the confirmation number in order to get the
$10 early bird discount.

I'm guessing our snow storm will be going East, so go to the AVSA web site and
start the registration process and snail mail the form by the 25th!

I have already completed The Gesneriad Society's very quick and easy on-line
registration for the Vancouver convention. http://www.gesneriadsociety.org/
Watching the Olympics and seeing the beauty of that city has increased my
enthusiasm to go there in July.

Hello, I go by jlyn and am from Wisconsin, USA.  Thought I tended to go overboard with growing until learning the number of violets others collect.  I raise violets to eventually include in plant baskets.  I really love making these baskets to cheer up & lift the spirits of shut-ins, hospitalized, new moms etc.  The violet is always center front & totally perk up the baske planting.  Jlyn

Does the fantasy show up in the second bloom if the first bloom is solid? I've
tried to start one twice now, and both times the first
bloom is solid. Please advise, should I give away or give up?

Hard to say, Bernadine.  I guess it doesn't hurt to wait for the second blooming.  I have grown Rainbow's Quiet Riot for a number of years, and it has always shown fantasy for me.  I think there is some variation when the growing conditions change.

When I started leaves of RQR, all the plantlets were fantasy plants.

Hi Bernadine;
My experience with Rainbow's Quiet Riot and with all reverse fantasies is to be patient.  The fantasy does sometimes show up with later blooms.  Also if grown warmer there is more fantasy.  I had Fisher's Leone and it never had much fantasy until I grew it warm.  The same goes for Kimono.  I grow them on my top shelf nearest to the fireplace.

Thanks, Aneita....that gives me hope. I don't want to keep
a plant that is not up to par, but I like the fantasy, if I can get it.

 Bernadine,

I didn't want to give you the impression that Rainbow's Quiet Riot isn't a good plant!   I am sure Aneita will agree with me.  RQR is a superb plant!  It grows into a very symmetrical shape and blooms well.  You will like it, if your blossoms eventually bloom true.  If not, it is worth acquiring another leaf from a different source and trying again.

I always keep at least thee baby plants from leaves of fantasies until they bloom, just to make sure I get at least one hat has the fantasy that I want.

Wishing you good growing!

Amen!  It is a very nice symmetrical, floriferous plant.  I like the dark green leaves.  I bought one a few years ago and it only had a few fantasy streaks.  I must have kept it warmer because at the very next blooming it had a lot of markings.  I'm not sure I have it, but will try to acquire it again.

Posted some new photos; some tracing through time of the appearance of
variegation in a couple of my plants. I'm wondering if it's partially
related to following Thad's suggested addition of Epsom salts to my
water, to improve the yellow of yellows... Does magnesium sulfate help
variegation??? Interesting...

Or maybe just moving them to my "new" 2nd shelf, that does not have its
own little heater to keep them at 70 deg, but is right next to the shelf
that does. (seems silly that there wouldn't be "heat sharing"...) Both
plants are on lower shelf of new shelf unit. 1 is right next to the
Ness' Fantasy Gold pictured.

Has anyone ever experimented with Coconut Coir potting media? Either
instead of or mixed with sphagnum moss media (aka ProMix BX)? If so,
was it a good/bad/indifferent/horrid experience? Thanks.
