Subject: Question about a Violet labeled Ancient Lace

I have a question for you... I was given several (actually about 20)
starter plants of an African Violet called 'Ancient Lace' I have never
been able to find anything about it. The bloom is a light pink with a
green fringed edge. The very wavy, frilly leaves are pretty too. It
looks suspiciously like the old Swingin' Safari by Baker. It also may
kind of resemble Antique Elegance.
What I'm trying to determine is the accuracy of the name. Has anyone
ever heard of Ancient Lace?
I fear that a seller in our area just stuck a name on it, (they had a
tendency to do this and think it was OK) and a lot of plants had to be
relegated to the ranks of miss-labeled plants and grown as such or tossed.
I'll post a picture as soon as it blooms.

Aneita,

I found this description in my FC2 database - it probably came from Joan B.

Ancient Lace (???) Semidouble pink star/green ruffled edge. Dark green, ruffled.
Standard (User Database)

Hope this helps.
Happy AVing!

Hi all,

Has anyone heard of an AV plant named "whoow"?  I just aquired this pretty little plant but I can't find anything on FC2. Here's what I do know......it's a semimini; TL variegated leaves; the blossoms are small s/d white with a frilled edge.

It's really cute and I'd like to learn more about it, if possible.

Thanks,  Martha Spyridon (S. FL)

That sounds like what I remember of the bloom. Mine should be blooming
at some point. I think I'll transfer this info to my FC2 database.
Thanks ;-)

Dear Aneita,
I know this variety, J. Munk is the hybridizer. It's a very popular variety here, almost every Hungarian collectors have it.
I love it too, this is one of my favourites. You can see it in this gallery:

Hi, folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows where to find the following:

1. A picture of "Night Vision". I just got leaves of it as a bonus with an
order. I can't find a picture and am curious to know what a "black and white"
violet looks like.

2. Leaves or a plantlet of "Optimara O'Keeffe."

Thanks loads!

Night Vision (8724) 03/23/1998 (D. Harrington) Semidouble black-wine large frilled star. Variegated dark green, cream and pink, heart-shaped, pebbled, glossy, wavy/red back. Standard

As I work with my violets, I keep a scrap of paper nearby to jot down my
questions. I have a few! I'm going to put them out there and hope that someone
can answer at least one of them.

1. I have a beautiful red semi named O'Scarlett O'Hara. Well, Miss Scarlett has
grown to about 9" in diameter with leaves that are about 3" across. She is in a
2 1/2" pot. Is this the habit of this young lady?

2. Is "Pearly Buttons" a trailer?

3. Is someone able to give me a description of "Morgan's Irish Down"?

4. What can I do to "green up" the variegated foliage that is almost completely
white? Is there something that causes this?

Thank you for any answers you can give me. And you are all on my gratitude list
this Thanksgiving season for all the valuable tips and information that you
share.

Blessings, Marie

Scarlet O'Hara is a standard. Here's the description frm FC2.

Scarlet O'Hara (M. Maas) Double dark coral. Plain. Standard

Pearly Buttons is not a trailer, it probably has suckers. Just tease them off the main stem.

Pearly Buttons (A. E. Adams) Double white. Dark green, plain. Miniature

1. I don't grow this one (or many semis) but I think you mean:
Mac's O'Scarlett O'Hara (G. McDonald) Single-semidouble red pansy/darker fantasy. Variegated foliage. Semiminiature

2. (Already answered)

3. Morgan's Irish Downs (C. Eros) Semidouble-double pink/ blue fantasy. Medium green. Miniature

4. It often helps to grow warmer for less variegation, also try using a fertilizer with more nitrogen (higher first number). Some have added Epsom salts to the water to green them up (I haven't tried this) or sprayed with fish emulsion (smelly) or used fish emulsion pellets. What ever you try...test on just a few plants until you can see a difference.

I believe this should be Mac's O'Scarlett O'Hara , and is a G. MacDonald
hybrid. It's not been listed and even though it's a semi-mini, it tends
to get oversized. Maybe that's why it's not been listed. I've not seen
it offered by the usual vendors for a while. Maybe it's because it does
get a little large...but one thing for sure it's really red!
reeeeeeeeely red!
I've got the plant but it's not blooming right now.
Enjoy your treasure :-D
Aneita in SO CAL
PS - I give my pale "too variegated" foliage violets one or two
waterings of Epsom Salts at the rate of 1 tsp. per gallon. I know I've
seen more recommended, but if you go to far with it you're likely to get
dark green, brittle foliage...not good.

Marie, I can only talk of #1.  I had Mac's O'Scarlett O'Hara; it's a semimini.  Some of the Mac's will grow larger.  I think it was Mac's Carnival Clown? or something similar (don't have FC2 on this pc at the moment to double check).  Anyway, it had to be re-classified not long ago to a standard.  Is the foliage on your plant verigated or solid green?  I don't know about the other Scarlett O'Hara someone mentioned, but hope you can figure it out.  Bev

4.  Greening up plants - I'll add epsom salts to the water, too, using 3/4 to 1 teaspoon per gallon.  I'd rather have too much green for awhile so at least a plant can get growing good.  Bev

Here is something that works for me.  I take one of the slow release fertilizer sticks designed to stick into the soil of house plants and cut it into 2 or 3 pieces.  I put one of two of them into the top of the pot, just push it down into the soil.  It is quick and easy and works every time to green up a plant.

Hi,
I generally find that cooler temperatures produce the white variegated leaves. I would suggest moving the plant to a warmer part of the house, preferably up a bit higher and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Everyone,

Got a message from Darryl Hoover whom Definitely Darryl is named.
He stated that growing the leaf of this plant in a clear small cup will produce
lots of plantlets.

I put down two leaves and got one baby from one leaf and one nice baby and a

Hi all. I have a short article by Jeff Smith, listing
dominant/recessive flower, leaf, and plant traits, and a couple that can
only be inherited from the seed parent (momma plant). Most Variegation
goes in this latter, from the momma plant, but Dr. Smith has a note on
Lillian Jarrett/mosaic variegation, that it's only in part from the seed
parent.

I get the general impression that I could really use the whole article,
to learn more about the mosaic genetics. Or some other version of a
crash course. I have this dumb idea of putting a tri-colored bloom over
mosaic foliage -- quite a goal, especially not really knowing how to go
about it. <g>

Thanks in advance.

They are both listed in FC2 but do not have registration numbers.  We don't have shows here in Michigan so I don't know if this stops you from showing them or not.

Neither are registered. However, you should be able to show them in the regular classes. Usually only AVSA collections require registered plants.

Hi Dena, my First Class is up to date Nov 2010 and neither are registered - but surely if they are in First Class then they are able to be checked against the description and should be allowed to be entered in a show? Maybe your rules are different over there but here in Australia as long as an AV has a listed description - either First Class or the hybridiser's list and can be checked then it is allowed if the description and the plant match. Not all plants get registered with the AVSA after all, so surely a proper description from the hybridiser in First Class would be good enough. I would be interested to know what your show rules over there are.
