Finally!  My so-called Ramblin' Rose has bloomed.  Here is a pic of it.  It is a lavender with light purple fantasy....like Ramblin' Dots.  The leaves are identical to Ramblin' Dots.  I'm thinking that someone when writing the name saw the word Ramblin' or remembered the word Ramblin' and asumed it was Ramblin' Rose.  Well it's not.  This is an example of how incorrect names get started.  Now I can never be sure that it is Ramblin' Dots.  Yes it is variegated with that white vareigation, just not showing in this pic.

Please, please...double check your names and spelling.  Make sure it's right.  Don't worry, I'll keep this violet and cherish it anyway.

Someone made the mistake of naming it Ramblin' Dots. Thank you, Aneita, for not making the mistake of assuming that it's Ramblin' Rose.

Aneita, You have my vote!  Care in naming is so important.  Now, you will never be able to really name your trailer.

Joe, I've had a bit of frustration over the years at people mis-spelling or mis-naming plants.  I'm pretty much able to tell what a plant isn't.  I knew it most likely was not Ramblin' Rose.  It didn't match the written discription in FC2.
That's an old Tinari hybrid and not variegated.

First, disbud.  I have always used one of the those automatic pyrethrum sprayers and dog flea collars.  I buy large dog flea collars, stretch to activate and cut them up and spread them around the plants.  Then every day or two, I try to mist the area with Raid insect spray and then leave for a few hours.  Remember, during this time, the plants were kept totally disbudded, down to the smallest little bloom stalk.

Now this didn't work for my son, so he also used Avid three times at weekly intervals faithfully.  Then his thrips were gone.

I am a bugaphobe  If there are bugs, I can't sleep until they die.  I spend way too much time thinking about them.

Hi my name is Cameron and currently I'm growing 2 AV plants. One is Optimara
Michelle and the other one is NOID. I had a couple of other AV plants but they
died because I wasn't giving them the proper care.

Hi Cameron! Welcome! I don't know, I've know violets to die because
they don't get along with me, so I don't know that you could say for
sure you weren't giving them proper care, without having more details.

Of course, there's exceptions -- I had a friend once, put a violet I
gave her out on her patio in the sun (!!!!!) to "perk it up"... Since
I'm in San Antonio, TX, and since the friend did this in about May,
well... the results were pretty horrible. 90+ degrees plus full bright
Texas sun for several hours *does* equal dead African Violet, generally,
unless you've got an exceptionally tough Optimara... which that plant
was not. When I was told, I started with, "you did *what*?!!" <g>

So take heart and don't be "gun-shy" for having some that didn't make
it. Or, I will "torture" you with a tale of how I lost, in one weekend,
14 out of 15 adult violets. 2 1/2 days, *all* dead. Really. And why
the survivor did survive, no answer. Or, the 16 yrs I could *not* have
violets, because my 2 cats thought AV's were better hor d'oeurves than
catnip... Those 2 had me *so* well trained, it took 2 more years after
their deaths from old age before it *occurred* to me that the "new"
housecat might *not* think AV's were so yummy.

See, so there are some real "tails" to tell out here... <g>

Again, welcome!

Thank you Cara! I think mine may have died from being in too big of a container and being in heavy potting soil. I had always thought the soilless potting soil was great for any plants. Now I know better. That's terrible about your AVs. I've knocked one over before and broke the crown. Unfortunately I wasn't able to save it. I'm in Plano, Tx. This summer has been terrible. I couldn't believe how many plants I lost outside.

In August I ordered s. clone grotei Silvert from a vendor (Rob's). The plant has been putting out beautiful tiny purple blooms with definite chimera stripes for the past few weeks. I've never seen this on a species plant before. I was thinking about trying to root a bloomstalk, but don't know if it would even work on a species plant since the bloomstalks don't have bracts like other plants, and trying to find the "crown" could be difficult in that mass of leaves it has put out (definite trailer!).

Any ideas? I did write to Rob as well.

Hi Wendy,

I have grotei chimeric sport that is a trailer.  I  haven't tried rooting a bloomstalk as I have not been successful with that method with other chimeras.  It has taken me a year before it was big enough to harvest crowns.

I did a search of this topic and reading older posts from some years ago, it
seems some used it against powdery mildew and root rot. I've heard some use it
regularly in their watering, but don't know why. If you use hydrogen peroxide,
please tell us the percentage (3% or 35%) and the amount used per quart or
gallon of water (or straight out of the bottle?)...and for what purpose. I know
there's supposed to be a food grade hydrogen peroxide, but I can't find it at
the local stores.

I suppose this has been cussed and discussed a lot lately, but I'd like to know if there has been any progress on the AVSA Website.  I sure miss the reference of the photographs.  There were sometimes pictures of violets that were different from FC2 and also the ability to see a larger picture.
I've read various rumors about a new website in the making.  Just wondered if anyone knew anything...?

The “rumors” I heard at the NY show was that the web designer they hired got about half way done and skipped town with the money.  They have hired someone new, but he is having to start all over from scratch.  The goal was supposed to be by the end of the year.  Who knows????

Thanks, Janet and Linda...makes sense.  It just didn't seem like AVSA would take so long.   If somebody did take money from us and "skip town" that's pretty cheesy.
I'll check out the Magazine.  I had to leave for a trip, so didn't concentrate on going thru it very much.

I haven't had any problems for a long time with any deceases or pests. But over
the this last summer my 'Falling Snow' was attacked with the rather large
(2-3mm), spongy powdery white lice (they have a name but I can't think of it
right now)

I treated it with a spray, and at first it seemed to have worked. The flowers
died but the plant remained fine. After 5 or 6 days I discovered a few more
small creatures, sprayed again and right after that the plant died. I tried to
make some cuttings because 'Falling Snow' is a very easy plant to do that with
but to no avail. And I have searched all over the interneet for an other one but
cannot find any. Is this variety not popular these days anymore? It was one of
my favorites.

Thank you for any information on where to find an other one.

Thank you,

Hi Deb,

If you don't mind me asking, did yours die ? And if so, from what? Just trying to prevent it for the next time. It's one of my 4 favorites (the other 3 being Falling Rain (got it) Happy Trails (got it) and Purple Orbit (lost it and can't find it anywhere but that may be the wrong name and it is NOT one of "Rob's").

Thank you for your help!

I received a gloxinia plant from a friend a couple of months ago. She told me it was dead and I kept telling her that it goes through a dormant period.  But she kept insisting that it was dead. So I took it and kept it in the dark for a few weeks and I kept the soil barely moist. I found out today, that it has produced several new sprouts. I've never had a gloxinia before, I know its similar to an African Violet but is there any other special requirements for growing them? Thanks

I just wanted everyone to be aware of a scam that is being pulled on African violet vendors (among others). A woman named Julie Braswell is contacting African violet vendors, claiming that she never received an order or a part of an order that she placed with them. Upon checking their records, they cannot find such an order. However, to make sure, some of them send what she claims she's missing, since it's usually one or two plants or a few leaves. She sometimes uses other aliases, among them are Julie Caylor (her maiden name), Leeann Taylor, and Brayna Taylor. She often claims that she's elderly, and her messages ramble on, making you think that she might be mentally ill or retarded. Both are to make you feel sorry for her. She's actually 53 years old.

A warning letter has been sent to AVSA commercial members, but I know there are some sellers who are not AVSA commercial members, so pass this word along. If you sell on eBay you probably won't encounter her, as she has been banned from eBay, due to her fraudulent practices.

Yes indeed it is a seed pod! Leave it in place until it shrivels up and
turns hard and brown. Then you can cut it open and plant the seeds.
It's lots of fun!

Hi, I'm new to this group. I have this plant and I can't find a photo or a
listing of it anywhere that I've searched on the Web.

I got the leaf, can't remember from whom, and grew it into a plant. It has made
its first bloom--very frilly petals of pale mauve and darker purple edging (very
pretty). Bloom is quite large. Leaves are plain and a medium green. It's a
standard size. Got a clue or a photo?

A warning letter has been sent to AVSA commercial members, but I know there are some sellers who are not AVSA commercial members, so pass this word along. If you sell on eBay you probably won't encounter her, as she has been banned from eBay, due to her fraudulent practices.
