Hello, I have a problem which I would appreciate help with.
I have been using rain water successfully for several years, until about
last summer when we installed a deep well for our lawn irrigation. I had
the water analyzed and got an excellent report. I tested the new well
water on a few AV plants without any ill affects. When it stopped raining
in the fall ( and it hasn't rained much since) I found myself using the
well water for all of my plants and they are loving it with one
exception: a lot of the new AVs are beginning to halo around the leaves'
edges. I began to sprinkle a few grains of Magnesium Sulphate into the
water of those haloing. The centers and new growth is growing out green
and healthy. However, the old leaves which are haloing don't change,
which means they have to be removed practically to the crown.
Something is missing in the well water that my plants need for green and
healthy leaves.
My question: I'm realizing that I should add something to the water from
the baby stage on to prevent the haloing from the start.
Is there any advice on how to handle this problem? Otherwise the plants
are healthy and growing well.
Thanks, Christel

I'm back to growing african violets.....  i have ten plants for starter... which
I got from an old friend of mine who's responsible at introducing these lovely
plants here in the philippines.
Its good start that I had read dealing about av's w/ long necks... I had three
w/ long necks and suckers ... but currently won't have any plans of repotting
them yet since they're are profusely bloomers..

Hello, Christel,

That is a frustrating situation.  I live in an area where we have wells, too.  I have very hard well water at pH 7.0, but I have no problem with my violets.  I have used the well water continually since we moved here in 1986.  Some well water works well for violets, but other wells may have water that is no suitable for plants. I have around 475 plants and I guess I have been lucky, since it doesn't rain that much here!

First of all, you should be certain that you didn't change anything else in your culture, like increasing the time the lights are on, or your fertilizer.  If that is true, I would suggest that your well water is indeed the problem.  If the addition of a small amount of magnesium sulfate has solved the problem for your new growth, you may have already solved the problem and you can continue to make that addition.  Once the older leaves have grown to full size and become haloed, there may not be enough growth for them to recover.  We often notice mars, or spots on leaves and the damage never heals.  You may be stuck with waiting until the new green growth grows out, removing the haloed leaves gradually, until your plants recover their green color.

If you think there is a chance the haloing might clear up, you could switch back to rainwater for a few plants to see whether that is true.  I really doubt that they will recover, though.

What was the pH of your water when it was tested?

I grow most of my violets under lights. I have two 48" shop lights (4 tubes)
set up over a 24" X 48" space. I have seen that many people seem to be using
only two tubes in their plant stands. It seems to me that 2 tubes would not be
enough light and yet many people are growing beautiful violets with that type of
lighting or am I mistaken. Also I usually have the lights on for 14 hours per
day. My violets are growing well with my conditions but it would certainly be
cheaper to use less light. What are people's observations on how much light and
how long.
Thanks for taking the time to give me some feed back on this.

Hi Wendy,

You can grow a wider range of violets and other plants using 4 tubes.  Many violets can be grown under 2 tubes.  If you want to save money, you can switch to T5 or T8 bulbs. I have shelves now with 2 or 4 T8s and am in the process of setting up a stand that will have 2 T5s on each shelf.

I generally have my lights on for 10-12 hours for winter and up to 15 hours in the spring.

Morning Wendy

I have four 2light stands in my Violet room , I have them on for 12 hours a day until a couple of month or so before our show and then gradually  set them for 16 hours just before the show. I have been growing them for  almost 25 years this way and have won many awards. You most likely could get more plants under a 4 light stand but as you say the expense is much more. Hope this helps.

Wendy, I, too, use 48 inch shop lights.  I have four commercial racks with four shop lights on each one, plus two more under the cabinets in my plant room.  I use one Gro Lux and one Cool White bulb in each light fixture.  My plants are about 8 inches from the bulbs and I have the lights on for 8 -10 hrs.

I think everyone needs to adjust the amount of light to give them the best growing conditions.   I have grown my plants under lights like this ever since I got my first rack in the early 1980s.

it would certainly be cheaper to use less light. What are people's
observations on how much light and how long.
Thanks for taking the time to give me some feed back on this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Wendy & welcome to our group.
You don't mention where you are, I have lived in NY and now have been in FL
for the past 16yrs.
In NY I used regular shop lights with (2) 48" cool white bulbs. Since the
weather was cooler up there I ran my lights 10hrs per day on timers. Just
before a show there was incremental increases to 12hrs then 14hrs. I did
that for more than 20 years and had lovely plants with many awards.
Now in FL I'm using the wide spaced light fixtures but I still use the (2)
48" cool white bulbs on timers. It's hotter down here even with a/c & I
still keep my lights on for 10hrs but do not necessarily increase before
show. My shelves are the same dimensions as yours and my plants are doing
just fine and in constant bloom.
Don't be discouraged...I do hope that you're feeding your plants and
repotting at least once a year. Your plants will "tell" you if you need to
make any adjustments.
Happy Growing & good luck, Martha Spyridon
Thanks to all that told me about their growing setups.  I think one of the things I must do is get some warmth in my space as the lights are set up in a cool basement...stays cool most of the summer as well.  I just set up a heating mat to just improve the growing space.  Then I will see what the light needs are.
Wendy, I, too, use 48 inch shop lights.  I have four commercial racks with four shop lights on each one, plus two more under the cabinets in my plant room.  I use one Gro Lux and one Cool White bulb in each light fixture.  My plants are about 8 inches from the bulbs and I have the lights on for 8 -10 hrs.
I think everyone needs to adjust the amount of light to give them the best growing conditions.   I have grown my plants under lights like this ever since I got my first rack in the early 1980s.
I grow most of my violets under lights. I have two 48" shop lights (4 tubes) set up over a 24" X 48" space. I have seen that many people seem to be using only two tubes in their plant stands. It seems to me that 2 tubes would not be enough light and yet many people are growing beautiful violets with that type of lighting or am I mistaken. Also I usually have the lights on for 14 hours per day. My violets are growing well with my conditions but it would certainly be cheaper to use less light. What are people's observations on how much light and how long.
Is it 8'' from the top of the plant or 8'' from the bottom of the shelf ,plus I gues if u wick u have to deduct the sizeof pot and move the lights up farther ,right  ? I use to have a violet stand from Volkmans and it was so nice , big trays in the bottom ,but my good husband gave it to plant nursery  back in 1997 when we moved ....ugh and I loved it .
Hello, again,
In my setup, it is 8-9 inches from the TOP of the plant to the light fixture.  I grow mainly standards.  I have a couple of miniatures, which I have propped up so that they are about the same distance from the lights.
Wishing you good growing!   Sylvia (in Minnesota)
