The BACnet IT Working Group: Organization and Purpose

By Jim Butler, Cimetrics Inc.

October 22, 2009

The BACnet committee (ASHRAE SSPC 135) is officially responsible for the continuing development of the BACnet standard (ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135).  In order to facilitate this work, the BACnet committee has formed several working groups that are each focused on a particular topic.  Each working group is led by a convener; Jim Butler of Cimetrics (mailto:jimbutler@...) is the initial convener of the BACnet IT working group.

Most proposals to change the BACnet standard are developed within a BACnet working group, so working groups are where the action is.  Working group members are encouraged to be actively involved in the development and review of change proposals.  However the working groups do not have the authority to change the BACnet standard on their own.  A significant change to the BACnet standard requires at minimum an official standards action by the BACnet committee and a public review administered by ASHRAE.  The voting members of the BACnet committee are very busy, so the working group convener will generally not bring a proposal to the voting members for official consideration unless the working group has voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal.

The BACnet IT working group was formed in response to a number of industry trends.  Since the design of BACnet began in 1987, much has changed in the world of computers, networking technology, and building automation systems.  BACnet has been sufficiently flexible to handle many of these changes, but more changes are coming that may further challenge BACnet’s architecture.  Here are some of the changes that could affect the requirements for building automation systems:

1. The trend toward convergence of IT and building automation

2. Network security policies and standards

3. The increasing use of battery-powered and wireless networked devices

4. “Smart Grid” applications that involve building automation systems

The BACnet IT working group’s initial task will be to enumerate the general communication requirements of building automation systems that will be deployed over the next several years and evaluate BACnet against those requirements.  To the extent that BACnet does not meet those requirements, the working group will discuss, at a high level, how BACnet could be modified or redesigned in order to better meet those requirements.  Based on the outcome of those discussions, the working group members might initiate projects to investigate various design options.

To do this job well, we need to educate ourselves about IT networking technology and related best practices, and we need to efficiently share relevant information with other working group members.  BACnet working groups have traditionally used a combination of e-mail, teleconferences and face-to-face meetings.  In the BACnet IT working group, we will also experiment with a Wiki as a means for organizing and disseminating information that is relevant to our work.

The BACnet IT working group is expected to hold face-to-face meetings four times per year.  Here is our best guess about the dates and locations of some upcoming meetings:

Fall: Tuesday November 10, 2009, 1 - 3 p.m. at Georgia Tech in Atlanta

Winter: Friday January 22, 2010 or Sunday January 24, 2010 in Orlando

Spring: April 2010 in Germantown, Maryland

Summer: Friday June 25, 2010 or Sunday June 27, 2010 in Albuquerque

Information sharing resources that are currently available to all BACnet IT working group members are:

1. BACnet IT Yahoo Group e-mail list (mailto:bacnet-it-wg@yahoogroups.com)

2. BACnet IT Yahoo Group file repository (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/bacnet-it-wg/files/)

3. BACnet-L e-mail list, for general discussion of BACnet (see http://www.bacnet.org/Contact/BACnet-L.htm for information on how to join)

4. BACnet IT Wiki, TBA

The convener requests that BACnet IT working group members use the Ubuntu Code of Conduct (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct) as a general guideline for their activities within the BACnet IT working group.

My goal for the BACnet IT working group is to prepare the BACnet committee for a
possible major revision to the BACnet protocol. This is based on my view that
BACnet, as it is currently designed, will not meet future market
requirements/expectations for building automation systems that we can already
foresee. (See document JB-029-1 "Vision for BACnet IT" in our Yahoo Group's
Files area.)

In order to accomplish my goal the BACnet IT working group needs to operate with
a different set of assumptions than some of the other working groups. In
particular:

1. We should not be afraid to consider a change to any aspect of BACnet if such
a change would make BACnet better in the long term.

2. If we decide that a major revision to BACnet is warranted, we will need a
strategy for achieving a high level of interoperability between new BACnet
systems and existing BACnet systems at a reasonable cost.

I do not want you to get the impression that it is our job to rewrite BACnet
within the BACnet IT working group. On the contrary, our working group
currently has a rather limited charter:

"The BACnet IT working group's initial task will be to enumerate the general
communication requirements of building automation systems that will be deployed
over the next several years and evaluate BACnet against those requirements. To
the extent that BACnet does not meet those requirements, the working group will
discuss, at a high level, how BACnet could be modified or redesigned in order to
better meet those requirements. Based on the outcome of those discussions, the
working group members might initiate projects to investigate various design
options."

The purpose of developing a set of requirements first is to give us a basis for
making decisions about the design of a future BACnet. These requirements are
likely to be rather marketing-oriented at first; for example, what control
applications and markets are we trying to serve using future BACnet-based
systems? From there, we can derive a set of high-level technical requirements.

I would like things to move along at a quick but reasonable pace. My goal is
for us to be well into the discussion of technical requirements by our meeting
in Orlando in January. In order to ensure that we move reasonably quickly,
Cimetrics will be active contributor of content to the working group during the
requirements phase. Charles Frankston, our Director of Software, has 30+ years
of experience in the development and operation of IT systems, and he will be
joining me on the working group. We will try to schedule two teleconferences
before our Orlando meeting (probably in early December and early January), and
those teleconferences will be focused on achieving a reasonable level of
consensus on key issues.

I welcome your feedback.

Regards,

- Jim Butler

I would like the group to consider issues of "scalability". At Cornell
we are seeing a variety of trends:

    - New facilities coming online with thousands of devices and
        hundreds of thousands of points
    - Server farms where servers can be dynamically provisioned and
services can be re-deployed as demand changes (the reality
side of the 'cloud computing' hype)
    - Enterprise scale identity and authorization (Kerberos, Windows
        Domain, OpenID)
    - User centric applications (what is happening in my office/lab)
differentiated from technician centric (debug this subsystem)
    - Smart phone and PDA applications (smaller, focused presentation
of content) differentiated from workstation applications
        (large screens, full Java/ActiveX/Flash platform)
    - Leaner web services (REST, JSON over SOAP)

How can BACnet fit into these "web scale" systems?

Dear BACnet IT working group members,

I hope to see many of you at our meeting in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon.  If you are planning to attend but don't know where the meeting will be held, please contact me ASAP.

The first phase of our work is to identify requirements for future building automation systems that are relevant to BACnet.  On Tuesday, we will start this work by trying to answer the following questions:

1.  What market(s) should BACnet-based systems address?

a.  Types of buildings?

b.  Size of buildings?  Campuses?  Enterprises?

c.  Applications? (HVAC, lighting, etc.)

2.  What trends are likely to affect the design of future building automation systems?

Examples: Merged network infrastructure, wireless communication, "Smart Grid" applications

Although these questions seem like they belong in the realm of marketing, it will be helpful for us to have a firm marketing basis for the discussion of technical requirements.  Based on the result of our discussion, I will draft a document which will be sent to the marketing committees of the major BACnet interest groups for feedback.

I also welcome your feedback and ideas (e-mail to bacnet-it-wg@yahoogroups.com).

Regards,

thank you, I will be in the office, so this is not a problem for this teleconference.

For next conferences, an international provider with local dial-in numbers (must not be toll-free, only local ones) would be great!

Dear IT-WG members,

We have set up a TWiki for the working group at http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com.
The purpose of the TWiki is to facilitate the collection and organization of
information related to our tasks. This will supplement our e-mail communication
using the Yahoo group. Please register to use the TWiki as soon as you can.

To start, I forsee using the TWiki primarily to capture our ideas in
brainstorming mode, and later we can use it as a way to gain consensus on
various topics.

We had a good discussion of market expectations and trends at our Atlanta
meeting. I will set up a web page for each topic, and people can add their
perspectives and comments to the page. There are also pages for us to enumerate
significant "pain points" in BACnet (as it is today) and to describe
interoperability scenarios. I will also post meeting notes and administrative
information.

It will take us a little while to develop effective procedures for using the
TWiki. For now, each page will have a maintainer (initially me) who will be
responsible for keeping order and helping guide the development of the page's
content. Each page will have rules on how the page is to be edited.

As always, I appreciate your feedback.

Dear BACnet IT-WG members,

The tentative agenda for the teleconference is as follows:

1. Introduction to the TWiki
2. Review of market trends that could influence our work
3. Work to be done before our next teleconference (tentatively January 8, 2010)

Attached is a file containing the content on the white board at the end of our
meeting in Atlanta in November. (Thanks to Jerry Martocci for recording the
content.) This file is relevant to items #2 and #3 on the agenda.

It will take us a little while to develop effective procedures for using the TWiki.  For now, each page will have a maintainer (initially me) who will be responsible for keeping order and helping guide the development of the page's content.  Each page will have rules on how the page is to be edited.

As always, I appreciate your feedback.

Regards,

Greetings IT-WG members,

NIST is looking at the possibility of funding some work to support the BACnet IT development efforts in support of Smart Grid standards efforts. By this email I am looking for information on companies that can meet the following requirements:

·         Able to analyze various smart grid publications and identify requirements of BACnet IT to effectively participate in the smart grid (specifically requirements for security, building automation networks convergence with IT networks, residential application of BACnet, and use of wireless)

·         In-depth knowledge of the BACnet standard, and participation in the BACnet IT-WG such that gaps in BACnet related to the above requirements can be identified and proposals formulated for addressing those gaps.

Let me know if you know of some company that might be able to perform such work. You can direct the responses to me. Thanks.

Hi David,

Happy New Year.  Hope your holidays were great.

JCI is getting on-board the smart grid train and might be interested in filling this roll.  However, to date, our plans are to be involved in the commercial sector only; that is, we are not interested in the residential market.  Please let me know if this meets your needs and what you would be expecting of JCI.

Your interest in this area is of great interest to my associates and I.  Collectively we have had the task of investigating BACnet and the interoperability issues involved.

We would be interested in having further discussions regarding this study. At this time we are independent of product suppliers and our interests are in furthering Open Communications and interoperability.

I await your reply

David,

I’ve never heard of any demand for BACnet in the residential market, either.  I don’t know of any SSPC-135 committee members in that business, and the secretariate, ASHRAE, certainly would be out of its league.

But I would love to see the BACnet-IT effort accelerated.

Good luck!

I am trying to finalize the Orlando agenda for the WN-WG.  Will you be at the meeting?  Would you like to dedicate some time to discuss BACnet Sleepy Devices?

We only have a 1 hour meeting.  Right now I am planning to dedicate the hour toward discussing a BACnet/EnOcean integration proposal.  However, if you want a few minutes to chat about sleepy devices in BACnet, I can add that to the agenda.

Let me know.

Hi all,

The WN-WG will meet in Orlando on Sunday January 24 from 4:00 - 5:00 at the Rosen Shingle Creek hotel.

EnOcean has solicited the BACnet committee to collaborate on a EnOcean/BACnet interface.  We will dedicate the meeting toward commencing those discussions.

On Thursday, January 14 at 10:00 CST (UTC -6) we will have a kickoff teleconference with EnOcean to start the discussions and to make the Orlando meeting more fruitful.  I have included the agenda for this teleconference below in case you would like to join into the conversation:

1) Lock down the BACnet/EnOcean objectives.  In our discussion, it sounds like there are multiple EnOcean/BACnet gateway implementations proceeding.  We want a single model defined so that all implementations are interoperable.

2) Review the differences in data types between the BACnet and EnOcean Standards and draft a transformation document that describes how an EnOcean data type maps into the BACnet data types.

3) We should lock down the topology of the network.  As I remember, the EnOcean/BACnet gateway function is defined at the receiver.  The endpoint (e.g. light switch) would never send a BACnet packet.  The receiver would receive an EnOcean packet and publish it forward as a BACnet packet.  I don't think we discussed if the receiver is a lines-powered device or could be a battery-powered device.  If it's lined powered, then it fits the existing BACnet model.  If it is sleepy, then we need to understand what a sleepy device means to BACnet.

4) We also need to mitigate the differences in the object models.  BACnet has a very generic object model.  Its objects map into analogs and binaries.  They don't carry much semantics.  I am not sure how the EnOcean object model works.  Is it generic or specific.  For example, does the EnOcean protocol specify things like 'lights' and 'temperature'?  Is it stateless?  We should vie for trying to define the interface as application independent as we can.  Otherwise every time a new EnOcean application is developed, we may need to change the BACnet annex.

5) We need to define the rules about access to documents.  Since BACnet is completely open to anyone, there's no problem for EnOcean folks to get access to BACnet documents.  I am not sure what access BACnet folks would have to EnOcean documents.  I'm quite sure that we are not going to get the BACnet committee to all join the EnOcean Alliance.

6) Finally, we should discuss any joint press release we might want to develop.  That would actually be in Dave's court.  I know when we did the ZigBee/BACnet partnership, there was some mutual press announcement.

The bridge number is an international bridge number.  However, there are different numbers for different locales.  Following are the numbers for North America and Germany.  If you plan to call in from other locales, please get back to me and I will provide you the call-in number.

Dear BACnet IT-WG members,

We are beginning to add content to the Needs Analysis page on the TWiki
(http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/NeedsAnalysis). In particular,
please take a look at Bob Old's "Sleepy Devices".

I am beginning to create some concrete scenarios

assist us in requirements development. If you have an idea for a scenario that
might help illuminate some requirements, or if you want to improve on the two
scenarios that are currently posted, please let me know. Later on it will
probably be helpful to make the scenarios more abstract.

Our next activity will be to identify the fundamental functional requirements
implicit in the BACnet standard as it exists today. This should be done without
judging whether these requirements are what we need going forward. I have
created a new TWiki page to be the home for these requirements:
http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/ImplicitRequirementsOfBACnetToda\

As we go along, we will identify things that we believe are fundamental problems
in BACnet today. The page to list those problems is:

* Unconfirmed Text Message
* Unconfirmed Private Transfer
* (UTC) Time Synchronization

The broadcast uses that we identify will help us to derive some of the implicit

The following BACnet services can be broadcasted:

* Who Is & I Am
* Who Has & I Have
* Unconfirmed Event Notification
* Unconfirmed COV Notification
* Unconfirmed Text Message
* Unconfirmed Private Transfer
* (UTC) Time Synchronization

The broadcast uses that we identify will help us to derive some of the implicit requirements in the current version of BACnet.

Subject: BACnet IT-WG: current status and next steps

Dear BACnet IT-WG members,

We are beginning to add content to the Needs Analysis page on the TWiki (
http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/NeedsAnalysis). In particular, please take a look at Bob Old's "Sleepy Devices".

I am beginning to create some concrete scenarios (
http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/Scenarios) that we can use to assist us in requirements development. If you have an idea for a scenario that might help illuminate some requirements, or if you want to improve on the two scenarios that are currently posted, please let me know. Later on it will probably be helpful to make the scenarios more abstract.

Our next activity will be to identify the fundamental functional requirements implicit in the BACnet standard as it exists today. This should be done without judging whether these requirements are what we need going forward. I have created a new TWiki page to be the home for these requirements:
http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/ImplicitRequirementsOfBACnetToday

As we go along, we will identify things that we believe are fundamental problems in BACnet today. The page to list those problems is:
http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/BACnetPainPoints

Here is the dial-in information for today's teleconference starting at 11:00 a.m. EST:

Dial: +1 (218)339-4300
Access Code: 228233#

The agenda for today's teleconference is:

1. Begin identifying fundamental functional requirements implicit in the BACnet standard.
2. Set goals for the Orlando meeting.

Regards,

- Jim Butler

Jerry,

On Sunday during the IP-WG meeting there will be a discussion of a proposal
(RL-003-10) that defines how BACnet could run over IPv6. That proposal
specifies the use of certain IPv6 multicast mechanisms for BACnet broadcast
messages.

Where possible, we should note how this would be handled in IPv6 where
broadcasts are verboten.

Logistics

The BACnet IT-WG meeting in Germantown will be on Tuesday May 11, 2010, from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Montgomery College, Room GB105.  The GB building is located on Goldenrod Lane.  The IP-WG will meet immediately after the IT-WG meeting.

Directions to the Montgomery College campus in Germantown: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/maps/gvic.html

Parking Instructions: Park in the GB parking lot in any white line (student) parking space, obtain a Temporary Parking Permit at the SSPC 135 meeting and properly display the permit in your vehicle.

Meeting Discussion Topic

I believe that BAS-IT convergence will require that BAS products become more IT friendly.  But what does that mean in concrete terms?  How might that affect the future of BACnet?  Please read http://bacnetit.cimetrics.com/bin/view/BACnetIT/ITFriendliness for background, and come prepared to state your opinions about how building automation products could become better citizens on corporate networks.

Also, if you haven’t already read Andy McMillan’s article on this topic (“Good Fences Make Good Neighbors”), I recommend that you do so prior to the meeting: http://www.automatedbuildings.com/news/jun09/columns/090531120404mcmillan.htm

From this discussion, we will attempt to capture some use cases and/or requirements that will help guide the next phase of our work.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or ideas.
