Once a month, I usually send out a large collection of commentary and
reviews to the Future Salon.
Because of the amount of material and response, I've finally set up a
website.
If you want to see everything I written for the past month check out
www.djcline.com

Below is an excerpt of my take on discussions this month by Wayne and
all.
Denice Denton worked toward a future that she will never see.
However she fell, she did not fall from grace.

Pride and Prejudice

The Gay Pride Parade was held in San Francisco today, but a prominent
leader was found dead Saturday morning.

Hi Futurists,

Weblog post: http://www.futuresalon.org/2006/07/nylf_good_to_kn.html

I will present again at the National Youth Leadership Forum for
Technology in San Jose in a bit over a week.

I thought about what my theme should be and I came up with:
Come alive! derived from the following Harold Whitman quote:

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you
come alive, and then go and do that. Because what the world needs is
people who have come alive.' (Harold Whitman)

Love that.

I am using a blog to record things that are good to know when growing
up: http://g2know.blogspot.com/. In the interactive part of the
session I let everyone sign up for the blog and then post. It's going
to be interesting, probably they all have MySpace accounts and will
show me a thing or two :-)

Please post suggestions and ideas that help young and old to come
alive as comments here.

This is not particularly interesting because this kind of thing has
been going on for decades. White supremacists, Mexican mafia, drug
smugglers, street gangs of all stripes, and organized crime have used
the US military as a source of military training for at least a
couple decades, and possibly longer. That comes with the territory
when you have a professional/volunteer military that accepts foreign
mercenaries (a not insignificant fraction of the US military are not
US citizens). There are plenty of other ways to get training if you
wish it, but the quality of the US military training is generally
very good *and* they will pay you for it.

These guys still have to act like model soldiers while in the
military and will get smacked down hard otherwise, so it isn't a
problem for the military as long as they keep any criminal
proclivities (as defined by the much stricter UCMJ) out of sight for
the duration of their term. Why a soldier joins is pretty irrelevant
to the military as long as they are perform as expected of them, as
is true of most job occupations of any type.

...are you sure you're not being myopic here?

If hate groups and gangs are the composition of your
forces sent for war or peace ( UN ) forces...what
types actions do they really take on the front line
re: Bosnians, Nigerians, etc.?

This is a representative force of the nation.

Do you remember what happened to the Roman Army & why
that parallels this situation?

Do you know why former police officer Joseph Wambaugh
named one of his books "The New Centurions?"

Have you been looking into reports of entire units
participating with drug lords in Afghanistan with
"delivery operations?"

You do realize that at some point in time these people
come back to state side as civilians.

Have you looked into reports of the mentally unfit
soldiers sent back into combat?

Have you looked into the rampant drug addiction of
soldiers in Iraq?

Much like your prison population which is now showing
what it can do in Louisiana leading to National
Guardsmen having to be sent down there...do you
realize what you're setting yourself up for?

Subject: Pravda says Aliens putting implants on Humans!

Aliens implant mini-transmitters in human bodies to
control Earth

04.07.2006 Source: URL:
http://english.pravda.ru/science/mysteries/82897-alien_transmitters-0

Ufologists and representatives of traditional sciences

continue to argue over whether rumours of the
implantation
of mysterious mini-transmitters in human bodies have
any
real basis. UFO researchers talk of an evil alien
conspiracy. So much evidence for such implants has
accumulated that it is becoming more and more
difficult
for serious researchers to brush them aside. Pravda.Ru

sums up the fantastical explanations.

Read more articles about aliens living among us here

As confirmed by ufologists, for some time now, tiny
objects capable of implanting themselves in various
parts
of the body have been discovered in people: in mucous
membranes, under the skin of one’s scalp, in the bones
of
one’s arms or legs – on any part of the human body. As
a
rule, they do not cause significant discomfort and are

discovered by chance, for example, in x-ray images,
but
once brought out into the light, they invariably throw

researchers into confusion. These things, it seems,
contain mini-transmitters.

This discovery was first reported a few years ago by
therapeutic doctor Maddy Nolan. She was treating
patients
on the island of Whidbey (Washington State, USA), when
she
came across a whole group of adult men and women,
every
one of whom had these transmitters in their body. In
each
case it was the same type of subcutaneous implant on
the
inner leg, just above the knee. They were shaped like
tiny
cylinders and were so close to the surface of the skin

that the affected area had become mildly inflamed and
reddened.

Aliens among us

When the doctor rubbed the area, the little objects
began
to decrease in size and disappear. Nevertheless, these

implants remained under the skin of each of the
patients
she studied. “I realized,” wrote Maddy, “that each of
these implants was emitting (or receiving) some sort
of
tracking signal or something of that sort.”

According to her survey, each of these people
remembered
the same thing. Whilst in their room, the person had
suddenly heard a loud noise like a clap of thunder
(some
testified that they had seen a light), and following
this,
the person became aware that two hours had somehow
passed.
These factors allow researchers to suppose that the
event
could not have occurred without the intervention of
pilots
or the technological methods of a UFO.

There is less basis for attributing this to fraud by
earthly special services, firstly because of the lack
of
explicable aim for such a control and secondly, the
structure of the implants itself clearly supersedes a
terrestrial level of technology.

Ufologists have decided to analyze the mysterious
implants
with the help of laser-emitting spectroscopes. Darrel
Sims, surgeon Roger K. Lear and others are involved in

conducting this research.

D. Sims has created a new organization in the USA: the

Fund for Interactive Research and Space Technology
(FIRST)
to elaborate rules for the realization of such
operations
as the microanalysis of the contents of substances
implanted and the correct protocol for results.

Dozens of operations have been carried out here and
the
elemental composition of the implanted
micro-mechanisms
has been clarified. The results of a chemical analysis
of
these mysterious objects are astonishing. They reveal
a
whole factory of elements created on a maximum area of
4x5
mm. The following list shows the composition of one
implant, studied by Dr R. G. Lear: Al, Ca, Fe, Ba, Cu,
Mg,
Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Zn, Si, Ti… Ufologists have drawn
attention to the fact that this is very similar to the

composition of microchips used in information
technology.
Perhaps their function is also similar: to track
people’s
whereabouts, control their physical condition,
complete an
essential connection…

Or perhaps they influence the way of thinking and the
actions of the subject, at the X hour. After all, we
use
tracking mechanisms on several animal species: birds,
dolphins…

The possible aims of such tracking on humans remain
unclear.

An astral implant

Official science and traditional medicine are
completely
ignorant with regards to this phenomenon. No-one has
publicized anything or made any research proposals
about
the implants.

Furthermore, such scepticism has been expressed in the

National Health Service with regard to UFOs and aliens

that some enthusiasts have even come to suspect a
successful cover operation.

Many explanations exist as to the purpose of the
implants.
For example, one theory is that the implant is some
sort
of energy block, capable of extracting all sorts of
information from a person. Another is that it pumps
out
psychic energy from a person and perhaps even
programmes
his behaviour.

The theory that there are worlds controlled by
parasitic
alien energies in this universe is not new. According
to
this belief, crime and the never-ending wars on Earth
are,
in their own way, a giant line production of fear
energies, on which parasitic worlds feed. Of course,
traditional science rejects the idea of even
discussing
such a possibility.

Just thought you all might like to know that the space elevator --
the same space elevator that was discussed at the last Future Salon
-- was discussed on Cranky Geeks. Although it's more like the
5-minute introduction with sarcastic wisecracks. But hey, what do you
expect from a TV show called "Cranky Geeks"?

Download the .mp4 or other video format from
http://crankygeeks.com/blogs/crankygeeks/archive/2006/03/29/115.aspx

Unfortunately, it looks like the video for the actual Future Salon --
where the space elevator was explained much more thoroughly -- hasn't
been posted yet. So if you missed the Future Salon your best option is
to read about it at the space elevator people's website,
http://www.liftport.com/ .

Tonight on CNN at 8 p.m. EST, Paula Zahn is scheduled
to focus on the serious problem of extremists in the
military. Her report will draw heavily on an
investigation conducted by Center's Intelligence
Project released last week.
The Center's investigation revealed mounting evidence
that military recruiters and commanders, under intense
pressure to meet manpower goals with the country at
war in Iraq, relaxed standards designed to prohibit
racist extremists from serving in the armed forces.

In a letter delivered to Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfeld last Friday, the Center outlined its findings
and called on the military to adopt a zero-tolerance
policy on white supremacy in the military.

Hello Bay Area Saloners. Just posted to the blog:

http://www.futuresalon.org/2006/07/mini_salon_this.html

I happen to be back in the area this week, and am heartbroken that Mark
hasn't planned a fabulous Future Salon for this Friday. But rather than
just grumble, I'm taking the initiative and inviting all of you to a
"Mini Salon", as we've had a couple times before: no speaker, no
predetermined topic, and no free drinks (sorry!), but the same
opportunity for discussion of the future with fellow Future Saloners.
I'll be announcing a location shortly, either in San Francisco or in
Berkeley. In the meantime, just pencil it in to your calendar if you
haven't yet made other plans, and I'll hope to see at least a few of
you there.

I've just posted the venue details to the blog:

Friday, July 21, 7pm.
Au Coquelet Café, 2000 University Ave. (at Milvia), Berkeley, CA 94704

It's just a block West of the Downtown Berkeley BART station, and
tomorrow is a Spare the Air day, so you can ride BART for free all day (

Stem Cell Veto

President Bush vetoed a stem cell research bill.
Conservatives worried that it would signal a moral decline in America.
They discovered that it might help paralyzed people walk again, and
worried it might lead to dancing.

Well, I'm a Republican, and I don't agree with a ban
on Stem cells. (Technically, I'm fiscally
concervative, and socially liberal (or socially
ambivialant))

I think we should have SOME restrictions on how cells
are harvested. We need some ethical guidelines.

This legislation was created to prevent the
intentional creation of human embryos for the purpose
of harvesting stem cells.

However, what has happened, is that couples have their
embryos stored for future use, and many of these
embryos aren't used, and eventually are thrown out as
medical waste.

IF an embryo is going to be thrown away, THEN it might
as well be utilized. (Don't throw the baby out with
the bath water! (ouch, bad pun)

Besides, it's not like we need millions of stem cell
lines. We just need a few hundred. Korea, and China
have about 300 each.

In fact, our researchers here are TRYING to get stem
cell lines from China.

So, don't think that all "Conservatives" are
"anti-stem cell". I'm not in that category.

Cmon now, show me some love.... :)

Hello Larry!

I said conservative not Republican.
They need not be synonymous.
I like creating jobs and helping people too.

Last year I lost a dear friend.
I should note that she was a fiscal and social conservative.
She worked in medical research and understood the potential and
limitations of stem cell research.
She felt that God gave her the ability to reason, to do research.
She died knowing the future could not come fast enough for her.
It was her wish that others work toward the cure that eluded her.
She told me that if I could not reach those who hated us with reason
that I could touch them with laughter.

Have you contacted your local party organizers?
Will you speak out for stem cell research?
Are you on a committee to change the platform?
Of course their should be research guidelines.

Loved my friend. You would have liked her.

DJ

P.S. Any relation to the Sean Patrick Maloney running for Attorney
General in New York?

DJ,

Sorry to hear about your friend. It's a sad day
indeed when a great mind is lost from this world. :(
I'm sure her research will be utilized by succesive
researchers for positive break-throughs in her field.

Good point about the committees. I have been
attending Republican mixers, and I have been asked to
get more involved.

That's a good idea about the committee. I will look
into that. Thank you.

And to clarify my previous position on the stem cell
terminology, I believe the ban on Stem cell research
begins with ZYGOTES and NOT Embryos.

Big diff in the two. It appears that the religious
element of the conservative movement has set the tone
for terminology, and has used Embyronic, when they
should use Zygotic / (Zygotal?).

Perhaps a new terminology in the lexicon is in order.
Zygotic/Zygotal Stem Cell research? (I don't know if
that would be technically valid, since I'm not a
genetic scientist. Or as they say on the Simpsons
"Sciention" :)

It's always a struggle for the minds of the great
unwashed masses. I think a stem cell taken from a
Zygote sounds much better than an embryo. (Of course
I might get corrected on this)

Here is the Wiki Ref:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem_cell

PFfft! According to the article typically the stem
cells are removed after the 4-5 days of growth. The
damn thing only has 50-150 cells!

Finally, there are 20,000 Maloney's in the USA. I
don't know Sean Patrick Maloney of NY, but I'm sure we
are related somewhere back at least 4 generations.

PS: I have a little advice for anyone when having to
deal with people who have too Religious dogma in their
brains. Typically these people are confined in their
thinking within the scope of biblical "truth". If
someone like this is against scientific development,
just point out that God commanded Adam in the book of
Genesis to "subdue the earth". This can be very
easily interpreted as exploring and implementing
scientific discoveries.

Ah yes, the umbilical cord. Good source.

That should settle DJ down. :)

Thanks for pointing this out Joschka.

yes, we are getting to that glorious moment when
paralyzing accidents or diseases will be repaired, and
a person will be made whole again.

It always cracks me up withe the Sci-fi stories and
engineers who fantasize about replacing human body
parts with cyborg/mechanical replacements. Once we
have conquered the genetic barrier, we won't replace
missing limbs with mechanical ones, but we will simply
grow replacements.

I've been meaning to write this up. I would like to
propose a question to the BA Future group.

What shall we call the process of improving the
evolutionary process?

I would make the argument that evolution is clumsy and
tedious. We are soon approaching the moment, when we
can step in and artificially induce beneficial traits
at the genetic level.

For example, why settle with one human heart? Most of
the human body is redundant. The human heart isn't.

Mammals have dual sensory organs, lungs, kidneys,
brain (left and right)

But the heart is alone in the short list of vital
organs.

Why not re-engineer the human body to have a second
heart?

Should we call this "Artificial Selection"?

Actually, there is a term for this already: germline engineering.
("Germline" to distinguish this type of engineering from genetic
engineering of somatic cells, the cells that are not involved in
reproduction and contributing genes to the new zygote.)

Computers double in computing power every roughly 2 years. Human
bodies and brains to not. This is why I am skeptical that germline
engineering will ever have significant impact -- remember that it
takes an entire generation before you can make another modification
to the germline. In other words if Mary is a genetically modified
baby, then you have to wait until Mary is old enough to reproduce (at
least 15 and more typically 25) before you can make another
modification to the germline and Mary's (genetically modified, again)
daughter Sarah is born... then another 15-25 years for the next baby,
and so on. The process is faster than unaided natural selection, but
much slower than the rate computer technology evolves. If strong-AI
arrives first then it is game over for germline engineering.

So it's a race. It's really a question of when you believe the
capability for germline engineering will arrive vs the capability for

It always cracks me up withe the Sci-fi stories and
engineers who fantasize about replacing human body
parts with cyborg/mechanical replacements. Once we
have conquered the genetic barrier, we won't replace
missing limbs with mechanical ones, but we will simply
grow replacements.

Actually, I suspect it'll be the other way around. Why bother growing
replacements when around the same time there's a good chance we'll be able to
replace biological components with molecular-engineered mechanical components.
Why
grow soft, weak, inefficient, inflexible, imprecise limbs and other
replacement body parts if functionally superior mechanical options are
available? In
theory, even genetically enhanced biological components won't begin to
compare with machine replacements. If and when that happens, and at a
reasonable
price, I'm sure we'll see the majority of the world switching from biological
to mechanical. I'd call that evolution in action.

As a sensualist, I'll toss in here that I happen
to be quite fond of the texture of those "soft, weak,
inefficient, inflexible, imprecise limbs and other
... body parts", and am loath to give up that
experience either as feeler or as feelee. Neural
interfaces and material science could handle such
things, I imagine, but too little attention seems to
be paid to them. The thought of a plastic-to-plastic
kiss (for example) is not compelling.

Live long and prosper,
Kennita
