Dear Bamboo Friends:
We at Bamboo Technologies are looking for scientific
studies that document or address the benefits of bamboo.
We are currently negotiating with a Clean Development
Mechanism for funding to develop a bamboo nursery, a bamboo
plantation, and a bamboo farmers’ cooperative. Our potential
investors have asked for a comparison between bamboo and trees. We
want to compare the biomass and carbon sequestration of bamboo forests
to tree forests, in particular clumping (sympodial) bamboos to
tropical tree forests. But any comparisons will be helpful at this
point.
We are also trying to determine how to calculate the
total biomass of bamboo that can be harvested over the 70 year life
cycle of a bamboo crop. According to INBAR, 20% can be harvest per
year. Multiple 20% of the biomass/hectare times 62 years of harvests
plus the final harvest and this would be the total biomass harvested.
Is this correct? Are there any studies that show how to calculate the
total biomass harvested over 70 years?
We are also looking for any studies that address the
benefits to the local farmers and villages. And we are looking for
studies that demonstrate bamboo’s ability to restore degraded land and
purify the ground water.
Please let us know of any studies that address these
issues. If you can let us know where we can find these studies that
would be even better. And the best of all would be if you can email or
fax a copy of the study to us at:

Happy New Year
