"Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and
diligence." - Abigail Adams

On this April Fool's Day, we are happy to announce the launch of OCC
Bangalore Learning Center powered by ThinkVidya.com.

OCC Bangalore Learning Center is a community platform for members such as
you to learn and / or teach new technologies, skill sets and build
competencies for your startup and professional growth. It is an evolving
melting pot for experts, practitioners, learners and seekers to come
together, organize class room training, knowledge transfer sessions and
learn from actual industry experience.

[image: Learn @ OCC Bangalore Learning
Center]<http://www.thinkvidya.com/occblc>

*Startups, Day Jobs and our Life*

Each generation feels they are born in crazy times; but maybe it is really
true for us. Most of us feel crunched for time and resources and it is even
more evident for startups. Some of us leave our nice and cushy jobs and
then as entrepreneurs juggle with everything from team building to funding
to marketing plans, to developing technology to striking a (failing)
balance between professional and personal life only to realize how much
more we need to LEARN to give our idea the wings to fly.

Similarly, when we are impatient (and rightly so) to start our business
just in college or immediately after our degree, still lot is required to
LEARN and much of it again in the classroom (phew).

Though the learning never stops (and its need); with OCC Bangalore Learning
Center, it is now easy to attain new knowledge quickly and pick up new
skills to keep moving fast on transforming your dreams to reality.

*Are you a lesser God?*

You are good, actually too good if we were to ask a few around you, but
others in OCC / Bangalore may still not know you and you never taught your
skill to others; well actually you did to many but one-on-one and not in a
classroom.

Hence, if you are the first time teacher we are more than happy to assist
and hand hold you from this moment to your first class being conducted and
appreciated! Get started and write to us on: teach@...

*How does it help the experts and practitioners?*

    - Experts can now share their knowledge and skills using the OCC
    Bangalore Learning Center
    - In the case of paid classes, experts also get financial reward. If you
are an expert and trying to bootstrap, this could be a way to get some
    extra income.
    - Most importantly, the Learning Center encourages sharing and helps
satisfy the teaching passion that exists in a lot of us. We have to
remember that when we teach, we also learn.

*How does it help you and other learners?*

    - OCC Learning Center accelerates learning by getting you in the room
with either experts from the industry or hard core practitioners who have
either burnt midnight oil and / or dirty their hands in the field.
    - Entrepreneurs, employees and students learn from years of hard earned
experience of experts, which accelerates the learning process.
    - If you are an aspiring entrepreneur, this is a great platform for you
learn, before you take the plunge.
    - Most importantly, OCC Learning Center ensures that you no longer have
to learn it the hard way.

Dear Members,

If you were to put your finger down on one thing that could set your
entrepreneurial journey right, it would undoubtedly have to be *raising
funds*.

In many ways, we could get this aspect wrong (considering we are
multitasking all the time) and trip ourselves in the process of getting it
right the first time. What helps is perseverance and guidance; and you
could soon find yourself ironing out the issues.

Perseverance you have in you already (so we believe); Guidance - you can
get here.

Evnts Corp brings you "Funding ka
Funda<http://event.ayojak.com/event/funding-ka-funda>"
- a* 3 hour session* on how funding is seen from the point of view of
entrepreneurs. We've heard it a lot of times from Investors, but rarely do
entrepreneurs share their side of the story.

Join us on the* 7th of April, 2012* at *Microsoft EGL*, to listen to:

1) Gaurav Jain - Founder & CEO of Mast Kalandar
2) Shivkumar Ganesan, Founder & Techie of Exotel
3) The Founders of Unbxd.com - Prashant and Pavan

who've successfully raised funds and understand: what it takes to approach
an investor, how to understand what's best for you in a deal, what's life
like before and after funding.

This is a three hour session which requires prior registration. The group
size is 50. Kindly register yourselves on the Ayojak link provided above.

http://event.ayojak.com/event/funding-ka-funda

Let's come together...listen to these folks who've got their FUNDING KA
FUNDA right. :)

Many thanks,
Poonam Kulkarni

Hello everyone!

After the Unofficial Chennai Wikimedia Hackathon's success[1], me and
Srikanth Lakshmanan are planning on having one in Bangalore. We've
talked to CIS and they've graciously accepted to host us on the May
19th.

Here's a draft page with details about the hackathon:

It definitely needs more work, so feel free to edit away! Also if you
people have ideas on what would help, please add to

HasGeek will sponsor the internet connection for this event. If you have
any experience pulling data from Wikipedia, you know that the internet
connection makes all the difference.

We recently got a blazing fast 20 Mbps line installed at CIS. To use it,
connect to the "HasGeek" SSID. The password is on the notice board. The
WiFi is a mesh with multiple APs to ensure everyone gets connected.

Dear all,As some of you might know, last year the Indian government
passed a new Internet censorship law that:
     * Allows anyone to censor any material from the Internet within 36
hours, even if it is not illegal in India.
     * Does not give the person whose website or content has been removed
any chance to object.
     * Does not let the government and the public to know what content has
been censored on what websites.
P. Rajeeve, a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, has introduced a
motion asking for this law to be scrapped. We've put together a page
from which you can easily tell [1] your MP to represent you and vote
against the Internet censorship law. Make sure to call them (and the
Ministers and DIT officials whose numbers have been provided on that
page). Make your voice heard: <http://goo.gl/r2iqG
<http://goo.gl/r2iqG> > Please spread the word.Regards,Pranesh

[1]: We've created a page from which you can e-mail your MPs, and then
call them using the contact details provided. 181 of 543 members of
the Lok Sabha have not provided their e-mail addresses, so phoning
would be required.

Hi Barcampers

Introducing New launch and seeking more ideas ! :)

After India's first offline bus search app in 2009, now we are coming with
India's first Social vehicle sharing service in Mumbai
http://SmartMumbaikar.com

Idea is to travel together from Home to office/Office to home, Save fuel,
Save daily travel cost, save environment and traffic jam.

Instead of travelling with unknown person, Travel with friends, friends of
friends :)

Currently we are only in Mumbai, and getting good tractions from local
media. But we are poised to grow and Bangalore may be next target.

In that context, Great if you can play with our sites, Invite your friends
(from Mumbai or All) and give us some idea, what can / can not work in
bangalore as well.

Appreciate your help in advance, and it will just take less than 30 seconds
to invite your friends from Mumbai !

Here you go, http://smartmumbaikar.com

Happy to have open/one-on-one feedback.

Thanks a ton

Hi folks,

I'd like to announce two upcoming events by HasGeek in Bangalore:
Rootconf in May, and The Fifth Elephant in July.

Rootconf [1] is a devops/sysadmin conference happening on 26th May,
2012, at DVK in the Christ University Campus. Some of the areas that
we want to focus on at Rootconf are Cloud and Virtualization,
Configuration Management, Performance Tuning and Security. We want to
hear about specific learnings that people have from dealing with any
of these challenges. Feel free to propose lectures, demos and
tutorials, for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of
experience on the proposal funnel [2]. The Early Geek tickets [3] for
Rootconf are open till Monday, April 30, 2012, and are priced at Rs.
700.

The Fifth Elephant [4] is a larger event on big data, on 27-28 July.
We're looking at how people store data, including experiences with
NoSQL databases, how data is analyzed per the requirements of various
sectors, and how the results are visualized. A fourth track brings
together non-tech professionals to discuss the opportunities and
problems working with data in their respective sectors. As a two day
event, The Fifth Elephant will have plenty of time to go into depth
with each of these issues.

The Fifth Elephant has an open submission process via the funnel [5].
A limited number of Super Early Geek tickets are available until
Monday, April 30, 2012 [6].

Funding For Start-ups
ForStartups is an initiative of NSRCEL@IIMB
It is rarely possible for start-ups to raise sufficient capital to kick-start
their operations, launch products and break even. Although a ‘one-time
investment’ strategy is theoretically possible, it is hard to cite examples of
any successful start-up that has gone this route.
Equity financing is one of the best ways to raise funds for a Start-up.
Equity financing is money lent in exchange for ownership in a company. New
businesses can use equity financing to finance operations for their start-ups,
or when they need to offset existing debt. Equity funding allows the
entrepreneur to obtain funds without incurring debt, improving cash flow. This
will allow business owners to focus their attention on making their product(s)
profitable rather than paying back their debtors.
The amount of equity an investor (angel/VC) holds is a factor of the company’s
stage of development when the investment occurs, the perceived risk, the amount
invested, and the relationship between the entrepreneur and the investor.
How do investors categorize start-ups? What are different stages of equity
funding?  What are key points of a Term Sheet? What are Angels and VCs and how
are they different from each other?
It is time to get insights into equity funding at  ForStartups. This is free
to attend, and registration is a must! www.4startups.in

Amazon AWS is free for 1 year, free tier, you can run any of stake
Heroku is one more option

Try these both, if you are bit techy!

From personal experience, i would recommend you to pay a little and get a
paid web host, rather than depending on a free web host. Or if your
requirements are minimal - i.e. just a website - you can try services like
Posterous, which allow you to have associate a domain name for free with
their service. Posterous, Blogger, Wordpress etc. can be bent and tweaked
to address most basic webpage hosting needs. But Wordpress does not have a
free domain park facility - you have to pay $12 a year - which, i think, is
not such a bad deal for a completely managed blogging service.

Guys- we need a small help from someone who knows .Net server management.
There is an issue with our "application pool" which is causing the server
to run very slowly.

If you were to drop the php requirement, you could use Google Sites linked to
your Google Apps account, for a static website, with some dynamism (i.e.
"contact us" form etc.) powered by Google Docs (linked to your Google Apps
account again).

If php is an absolute must, you could also go with a pay-as-you-go service (I
use http://nearlyfreespeech.net for example), where you pay minimal costs in
terms of storage, db usage and bandwidth that your site uses - My personal
website runs on it for ~$10 per year.

Regards,
Ujjwal
